Hi Folks,

Okay.. it's been a year since we posted this list. What changes have happened? How accurate is this list now in hindsite? Where did we go wrong and what do we need to add?

Please respond here and we're going to post a new and updated list.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

www.indieheaven.com

is a kind of like soundclick for Christian music but they offer WAY more services than soundclick including a power praise radio broadcast, artist promotion, indie music education, etc so I'm not sure where this might go in your list.

This is a differrent organization than the Christian Songwriters Network that you already have listed.

The Canadian Fairs is a dead link (though the page is still running of course) and the IBEA is now just http://www.ieba.org/news

I would also recommend the following:

fRoots Magazine (UK/EU): http://www.frootsmag.com/ (includes a great list of UK/EU festivals

Folk & Roots (UK): http://www.folkandroots.co.uk/

Jay Glicksman Folk Music List (International): http://folk.jg.org/

Folk Alliance Australia (AU): http://www.folkalliance.org.au/index.php

Kiwi Folk (NZ): http://www.kiwifolk.org.nz/

I also have a swag of addresses for songwriting organisations from around the world on my database I've picked up along the way and I'm interested to know if there's a central website that lists all (or at least most) of them.

So many have come and gone Debra, I don't know of one that is up to date or accurate. And new ones come and go pretty fast. And others are completely useless wastes of time which only serve to rip people off or to promote the music careers of those who started them (a personal pet peeve of mine).

If you have a list of good ones, post it here and others can perhaps add to it.

Brian,
All around, still a great start!

Most categories provide a good selection of resources, many of which are among the better known in the industry along with a few lesser-known "gems" and some with reasonable potential.

Few of us will be familar with every listing, but of those I suggested and know about, they're still around. I may add/edit one or two that may have changed since last year, so I'll take a look and see what comes up.

The area I'm doing the most research on is music licensing companies and related services, so I'm able to offer additional help/feedback on those when needed.

Brian,
Here's another great resource we should consider adding to our list:
http://musiclibraryreport.com
http://musiclibraryreport.com/ratings

It's new, but has great potential for JPF to collaborate with them to assemble a list of various music libraries where the music creators (artists, songwriters, composers) rate the music libraries with points and with written feedback which can also be kept anonymous.

I think it's a great concept which Art Munson has put together! So far it appears to be a completely pure (commercial, Ad free) website dedicated only for this purpose!

Hi Guys,

I just got back from the UK tour and still (argh!) have no internet access here at home... I'll be leaving again for a week out to the west coast next week and then when I get back I need to get caught up with everything. Our website is not updatable right now unfortunately. It takes an act of congress to change even a single line of text. Though it looks awesome thanks to Adrian, it's really like a big unchangeable graphic file and only programmers of the proprietary format it was created in change make a change and we don't have any volunteering time so Adrian has to ask favors of people he knows to do even the most simple things. If we can't move past this situation we may have to lose the beautiful new site and go back to the old site.. it's just not something we can live with any longer. All that to say that I can't make any changes to the resource list.

If and when we can, we'll be doing a lot of new stuff with lists and resources.

Brian

Hi Brian!

You could add this link to the music licensing sites: http://musiclibraryreport.com/

It has over 160 film music libraries like the ones you listed. It also gives first hand reports on many of them.

Brian,
What a killer list of resources. I'm going to be passing this along to our community of artists at Sayvee. I've been collecting a list over the past couple of years but this is solid stuff.

You could also add http://sayvee.com to the Musician Website Hosting category.

Nico,

Though I appreciate you letting us know, it's still not cool to take work from another site and use it on your own without prior permission or compensation. Sure, you can probably get away with it, but what does that say about you or your site?

+1 with Brian, better to provide a link to this site.

Brian / Mike,
Sorry, I didn't communicate that properly. I did place a link back to this page encouraging all of our artists to check it out. Didn't mean I was going to snake your stuff. The link is here: http://sayvee.com/tips. Thanks again for posting all this stuff.

Hi Folks,

We are working on the new JPF Site (Matt Moran has it loaded on our server and we're going to start filling in the pages). We want to update a resources page. I need help nuking all the old (or removing any undeserving links) and adding any new ones. So browse it a bit and let me know!

Thanks,

Brian

Not wanting to sound disloyal... but what about collaboration websites?

Justplainfolks.org (biggest and best)
FJAM (think they are face book based now)
musicianscollaboration.com

There are heaps of others...

well I think an obvious collaboration site other than JPF is musesmuse.com which is already up there. = )

Also please keep in mind this list is many years old now... let's refresh it and clean out the dead sites... anyone want to volunteer? Noel?

Recently I renewed my membership at ISA:

http://www.songwriter.co.uk/

Note: if here only one person supply us with song requests from artists, and this is WriterTomYeager ( many thanks to him for this) then at ISA artists themselves or their management send requests for songs each week, although ISA subscription is paid.

Brian,
Under the 'Music Licensing Sites' section, you could add:
LicenseQuote - http://www.licensequote.com

We've added a new LQ 30 FREE plan which supports up to 30 preview and master files (in MP3 format) which is available at the end of the 30-day Free Trial period. It's a fully functional private-label music licensing store which works well for any self-published songwriters/composers and they can embed the store on their own website and of course keep 100% of their licensing sales.

Some of the advanced features will be limited, but as the publisher's catalogs grow, most upgrade to the next level (LQ 75) plan so they can add more tracks and grow their store.

That's the update about the LicenseQuote DIY music licensing solutions service.

By the way, it's still a pretty good list (after all these years!) though should of course be checked to make sure that sites/services which are now out of business or have dead links are removed and/or corrected. Shouldn't take more than about 1 - 2 hours to test all the links and remove the defunct sites/links, etc. Then you'll have a great resources list to post and maintain moving forwards.

Hey Michael, what happened to your "Standard Pricing Calculator" site. I book marked it, but get a 404 page when I try to go there. I thought that it was a good resource.

A music library list would be a nice resource addition. Or the very least adding “Music Library Report”: http://www.musiclibraryreport.com/ to the list.

Another good web hosting site is 1 & 1: http://www.1and1.com/?linkOrigin=&linkId=hd.log.eue

Hi Ben,
It's still there, but moved to some new pages:
1. http://www.licensequote.com/mlq/music_license_quote.html
(See top right of this page)

2. http://www.licensequote.com/blog/in...e-using-our-standard-pricing-calculator/
(Scroll down to the Live Demo Store link)

Please check it out and then bookmark one of the new pages!
Thanks,
Michael

For Irwin and and everyone else. I came across this site of music companies (publishers included), that seems to be the most comprehensive I've ever seen. Many of the companies have web sites and they all have contact information.

http://dmoz.org is a mega site where new musicians/performers can look up people and places that match their experience. It can be a total pain in the butt to sort through but in the end is a place most likely to find a match for them.

Arts and Business are the two areas they should check out first... Sometimes an agent or venue will be listed in one and not the other.

Hey folks,

I'd like to update this list a bit. Anyone care to help out? We need to weed out the dead and add in the missing.

Let me know if you have time to click as well as if you see some missing stuff.

For digital distribution, you may want to add distrokids! They offer the best value (cheap fixed fee per year; 0% deducted from sales) despite limited number of stores (they distribute to only big stores).

Brian, the Entertainment Attorneys link isn't working.

Meanwhile, here's one that might be useful for general music law-related questions.

Brian,

You may want to take Pump Audio off your Music Licensing Site list. Since they merged with Getty Images there's been major contract changes. Don't know if you've seen this thread yet:

http://www.jpfolks.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1043391/page/1#Post1043391

For music licensing I'd recommend "Music Library Report" : http://musiclibraryreport.com/ Yeah, they charge for membership (minimal), but one can get the scoop on hundreds of music libraries from actual experiences. Even without membership there's a lot of free info on music libraries.

Thanks...

Any care to edit the list at the top for me? It would entail including the suggestions, removing dead links or problem companies and just doing a quick check of each link to be sure it's still relevant and in good standing now as it was back when I first posted it. If you can help, I will make you a moderator and you can edit the links.

Thanks to anyone who has the time, send me a PM.

Hi Brian:

Sorry, I don't have time to take on the task you need performed. I did take a quick peek at many of the links and a number of these are a journey to nowhere. Several are "for sale" and a few are dubious if not fraudulent. Naras is "dead" and MI7 leads to an e-mail address with no explanation other than it can be used to reach MI7.

There are plenty of good links and this list is certainly a worthwhile tool for members of JPF.

Thanks for all your efforts on our behalf.

Dave,

Did you happen to know how which ones were dead/dubious? We need to remove them and I can do it quickly with a little help finding the dead/dubious ones?

If not, no problem. I just thought since you went through them already, you might have some idea. What you've done was most of the job.

Brian

PS: I fixed the NARAS one, it's simply the Grammys now.

Regretfully, Brian... I did not make a list. I'm hoping to have some spare time available tomorrow (Wednesday) and will go down the list and confirm those links which are no longer valid, then report back to you via this thread with any appropriate remarks.

Morning, Brian:

As promised, here are the listings that have either changed or no longer work:

Group 4: Composers and Songwriter's Associations:

a. ACTRA (would not load)

Group 7: Education & Information Resources:

d. Harvard (error - would not load)

Group 11: Musical Instruments & Supply Retailers:

a. Folk of the Wood (would not load)

Group 12: Music Licensing Sites:

c. Musicnet (would not load)

Group 13: Music Marketing Resources:

f. Music Phonebook (now MusicPage.com)

Group 15: Music Organizations:

e. Mi7 (Questionable - only has an E-mail link)

Group 18. Musician Website Hosting:

d. Indie Kazoo (closed)

Group 19: Performance Rights Organizations:

I was surprised to not see a listing for SOCAN (Canadian Pro)

Group 23: Recording and Demo Services:

a. ColabNation (does not work)
e. SubStudio (no longer available) Our own Mike Caro

Group 24: Recording Software:

All links worked but several have changed the names of the site or the recording product. (Digidesign is now AVID)

I hope this helps other JPF participants in finding the resources they seek.

Best regards,

Dave

Hey Dave, I don't suppose you'd take another crack at going down the list to help me get rid of the bad links? (Or someone else maybe?). You could start with Dave's list above and add additional ones so we could start fresh maybe.

I've been wanting to start a new social network for independent artists and fans, of course this is a difficult task given all the competition, (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). In the meantime I started the Realindie group on LinkedIn, link below for your consideration.

Sorry, Brian:

I did not see your reply. Yes, I will take a peek at the list again. It may take a few days but I'll get back with my "findings" ASAP.

Hi Carvin:

Welcome to JPF. You have an interesting name... and... in today's environment... I'll bet you get some wicked glances from the ladies until they get to know you. I don't do "social media" after trying two and not caring for either. Took me forever to shake Linkedin. If it works for you... that's good news. I like to spend every available moment writing new material or re-recording my songs that need attention. E-mail still works best for me (or PM's if the site being used offers that method) because I don't have to respond during the middle of a session.

Later, Guys.... ----Dave

Dave, thank you for the response. I don't like using the popular social media sites either, that's one reason I'd like to start one without all the flaws, or at least a lot less.
