Anyone have recommendations for a reputable management company for songwriters? I've been searching the web and going through the Songwriters Market book with no luck. A&R people (etc.) only want submissions by those who have representation but it is impossible to find representation! Thoughts...? Thanks, -Jim

1) Ask them to identify the songs that they have actually placed during the last two years.
2) In a more general note, I do not believe that even Taxi has identified any song that they have placed with a top artist - ever.
3) Even more general, I have not hear of any outside songwriter who has placed a song with a top artist in the last five years.
I am a doubter - but the truth is the truth.

I think they mean a publisher rather than a manager.

Tom is right, there is bigger business in telling you how to make it with music than actually making it with music. The popular songs on the airwaves and in the clubs are all so generic and lacking any form of originality that the idea of having a "hit song" by an unknown artist is almost laughable. If there is a business that places songs, they do it for a fee, which takes away from the point in writing songs as a business in the first place. You'd make more money regurgitating the information on how to make it in the music biz as a small potatoes writer. because there are thousands of folks looking for that inside word.

You can't submit if they don't know you, and you need someone to refer you to get to know them. That's why companies like Taxi is succesful, because they will act like that middleman for you, to help you make inroads in the music business. http://www.taxi.com/I would not hesitate to recommend Taxi, if you are looking to give the music industry what they are asking for (not what you think they should want).

Hi Jim:
I looked at a couple of your links and enjoyed the story about your songwriting partner and George Jones. This is the most "catch 22" industry of all. The problem really is... "there are too many songwriters and wannabees... just look at the membership here at JPF... 19,000+ and I'm guessing at least 75% of them are songwriters or lyricists.
Back to your specific question regarding management for songwriters. I don't think I need to tell you this but for the benefit of JPF readers... unless you have a couple of moneymaking songs under your belt, you really don't need a manager... and probably won't find an honest one willing to take you on without a track record. Sure, there are lots of "managers" out there that will take your money and drink to you nightly at the local tavern.
I see you have already tried the CDBaby route and trying to get serious distribution is the main problem there... no matter how talented you are. In essence, nobody is gonna "pitch" your stuff any harder than you. Problem #389 is knowing to whom and where to pitch... and you won't find it in "Songwriter's Market." A significant portion of publishers, etc., listed there are only looking for a "home run" at your expense... or will be hitting you up for money, one way or another... and the rest won't listen.
I cannot fairly comment on Taxi or others who purportedly pitch your songs if they like them... after you've joined and paid.
Songwriting is both... an addiction and a vicious circle. Best of luck to you and I hope you'll "hang out" here with us often.
Dave

I think what you are looking for is a songplugger-not management... here is a link to what I think is the best songplugger company in Nashville......they have a long list of credits for placements with top artists...they arent cheap and they dont take every writer they hear......but if they think you have talent they will take you on and work with you.....I suggest you carefully read their whole website to learn about them and the process they have for review of your material.... http://sharpobject.com/good luck Tom
