.... ever.
Lots of fine possibilities but I will offer
Whitney Houston.
Messes up personally but when she sang ----- wow. She could just kill it.

Joni in the early days, although I have plenty of respect for whatever and whenever she does,
Nina Simone, years ago, as a 12 year old, I STOLE a tape from my mothers friend with her early works and got hooked for life,
Suzanne Vega, maybe not the top singer like some, but her first album is one of ten CD-s I'd take to a desert island,
Joan Baez, my favorite folk traditional singer ever,
Bjork, brilliant, imaginative, super talented and open minded musician,
Oumou Sangare, I wish I could understand the lyrics, but music is more then fantastic...

I guess Patsy Cline could fit in the pop category though she was a crossover from country. "Crazy" is the most played song on juke boxes to this day.
Diana Ross would certainly fit in as a most popular female pop singer.
Aretha Franklin, though she was also a crossover from soul.

"If one man can do it, any man can do it. It is true. But the real question is, if one man did it, are you willing to do what it takes to do it as well?" –Brian Austin Whitney
