Not sure where this one came from but I was listening to Neil Young's Like A Hurricane just before and I think has that kind of feel to it.
Born To Let You Go © 2011 Kevin Pearson
I still see you dancing on a cliff so high above the rocks thunder and lighting crashing as if anything could make you stop
and I guess that I was happy not knowing What I didn't know you were born to be free and I was born to let you go
For a time so long ago I held a butterfly in my hands Your wings were flapping though and I just could not understand
but I guess that I was happy not knowing What I didn't know you were born to be free and I was born to let you go
Somewhere on a summer breeze You're floating high above the trees Just as pretty…. as you are free
and I guess that I was happy not knowing What I didn't know you were born to be free and I was born to let you go

I like the hook to this and the first verse especially was pretty evocative imagery. I'd like more of that, strong images that tell a little more story.
I could hear Neil Young singing this in my mind while I read it.

Hi Kevin,
I like the sweet, gentle feel of this!
For the butterfly line, maybe use "fluttering" instead of "flapping"? And instead of "your wings" maybe "its wings"?

Lisa,
Thanks for your comments. I fluttered back and forth on the wings line myself. I'll take a look there again.

Butterflies and Beagles... Living together.. Playfully something, something ta da....... I dunno. Thought I'd give it a shot.. I really like this Kevin. It's so subtle and yet invokes a strong image. Well written. Peace, Dave

Dave,
Sounds like you have the ball for the butterfly and beagle song...lol.
Thanks for the comments on the lyric, kind of a gentle resignation to things we didn't fully understand as young folks I hoped.
