I have never pressed a disc at discmakers
Is anyone here who has done it interested in doing mine and making a few bucks in the process. A job? smile

You'd know and have the software requirements, know the pixels and dpi sizes and fonts etc....

lmk also point me too a link towards one or more that you've done
if you'd like.

Thanks
Mike

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Mike...
i haven't done any graphics for a discmakers job, but i'm sure they have templates and links on requirements for printing.
i've done a few for myself and graphic design is what i did (just got laid off) for a living.
here's a link for you check out...

Mike,
You may already have a template in a program you have. I have Printmaster 10 that has a template, for the disc itself as well as the inserts. I can add a picture, from my own files and do labeling as well. But if you don't want to do that you could probably just make up what you want and let Discmakers do the actual finished design. That's what I would recommend. Or look for someone locally to work with.

Hi Mike:

Befoe discmakers acquired CDBaby... I did two albums there and I elected to do the digital only route. They still required album artwork for their "retail outlets" and so I provided them with my best attempt. Both were accepted by CDBaby and I used software similar to what Ray Strode has mentioned. It's been so long ago, I can't remember which program... but if you don't have success with your requirements soon, send me a PM and I'll give you the name of someone who can create disc artwork and a cover jacket that will knock your socks off. This person is super fast, creative and responsive. Best of all, if he likes you (and what's not to like about Mike Caro) he works for peanuts.

Just so you know, my friend... you are one of the true heroes here at JPF and I admire you and your talent plus your tenacity a great deal.

Dave

Some great designs there Richard and I noticed that when you click on a sample cover, you get to see the full insert sample as well.

Cool.

I use Nero Cover designer.....it is a neat program to work and is very user friendly yet produces pro quality designs....it has templates for all types of discs, cases and covers..and each part can be edited customised and tailored to suit and adjusted easily..... full colour pics logos etc from your own files and artistic text sizes colours and fonts etc can be added and adjusted just by a click. I am sure that a printed copy of any design you come up with could scanned and sent to discmakers. The part I like best is the ability to fit to size option...no matter what you design you tick the fit to size box and it fits it all within the template.

Mike,

Contact Disc Makers and talk to them about having THEM do your graphics and artwork. Seriously.. they are AWESOME at it and do it exactly as you want and keep working at it until you're 100% happy. I think they are very reasonable. Also make sure you're getting you $50 JPF discount which people keep forgetting to ask for!

Seriously, give them a chance or at least call and talk to them about what they can do for you... they really are good at doing really nice work with whatever you want.. using your photos or graphics, or designs or any combination or doing it from scratch based on your description of what you want. Graphics/look matter a LOT on sales and probably mean more than any other factor which is why so many classic albums have classic covers to go along with them....

I have noticed that these heavily engraved discs with the designes don't play so good in certain cd players. The early cd's didn't have that as much. If I ever get that press I would like that control over settings. Do the ones mentioned have that and is there one that is better than the other?

Thanks you all you guys. I'm reading all the input. Brian your totally 100% correct on this. Only thing is I'm doing a very short run of discs and the starting fee for them to design it even after giving them images etc.. is more money than the CD's smile Also I thought of the 50 dollar discount but they may not apply it on short runs, maybe? I'll see.

These are the programs they accept graphics from.

Adobe Illustrator
• Adobe InDesign (can also open in Adobe Photoshop)
• Macromedia Freehand 8 and MX
• QuarkXPress
• CorelDRAW

Thanks

Thanks!

Mike,
My wife did the layout for my CD, but we didn't have any of the professional graphics programs required by Discmaker. Fortunately, I live across the street from a guy who does have them. (He does Toby Keith's CD covers in his garage.) I took the artwork and graphics (include a mock-up of the unfolded sleeve)over to him on a thumb drive. It took him almost no time to put it into the accepted templates. He also had some good suggestions for the disc itself. I was paying for a three color disc. He suggested doing a coat of white as one of the colors, going over it with another color (in this case, orange) and then using the third color (black) for the lettering. You don't end up seeing the white, but it gives the disc a more solid (best term I can come up with) look. He's my neighbor (and a friend) so we wouldn't take any money. We ended up giving him and his wife a box of home-made chocolate confections and a copy of the CD for his resume (and his listening pleasure.)
Kurt

Mikey! Que Pasa?

Any disc replication service usually has templates with pretty straight forward instructions on how to use. Some are more user friendly than others. We all know Discmakers reputation and they’re quality is always superior. If you were going the full blown pressed CD route, I would use them without question.

Sounds to me like you’re looking for a short run, hand them out to friends, family and have a few for sale at CD Baby. If so, there are a few places that you, yes you could do right on line and produce a perfectly acceptable product. Our 2LT live CD and my solo “Alone” were both done at: http://kunaki.com/home.asp Kunaki is very easy to use, very low rates and you can link them to CD Baby so they actually will make and send your CD out every time one is ordered. That way you don’t have to keep a few hundred on a shelf in your basement! The other is run by Musicians Friend at: http://www.diskfaktory.com/enter/009/default.asp?AffID=009&CartID=&PakPage=FastPak

Using any of the photo imaging programs you listed, you can create really good stuff. The higher the resolution, the better it will look. Whatever you decide, if you need help I can be there for ya. Just let me know.

I certainly don't want to take any business away from JPF sponsor Disc Makers, but for short runs, I second Iggy's suggestion for Kunaki.com. I've used them for my CD and have even made a couple of reorders, all without a single problem. For short runs, they are hard to beat.

Hi Guys thanks for all that info Iggy and everyone.

On using Kunaki one thing i noticed was PC only not Mac... Now you can use the Mac then transfer over to PC for sending back to them.
I'm in a unique position there, I have two MACS in the house both are online.. The studio software computer is a PC and is NOT online. Why you ask? Quickly 1- I NEVER EVER EVER got a virus on my PC... therefore my music is a little safer. Why? It's NEVER been online. 2- Everything I mean EVERYTHING you can think of is cheapier and easier to get your hands on for a PC.
Despite the fact that I love Mac and we've had them here since the Quadra 650. 16 years with a MAC. They are BETTER!

Secondly, there templets say nothing ZERO about inside tray cards... It's Very hard on there sight to find all the options your CD can have... That's not good at all. The download template has no two sides on the tray card...

Now lol even though it may a bit cheaper to use them it's seems limits and a little more hassle is in the way. That's what I try to avoid every waking day these days lol
The problem I'm having over here with Discmakers is the software that works using there stuff stinks... It's WAY more tricky to use with the learning curve...

For example my wife was setting this up for me, She said straight Photoshop was so much easier but they don't let you use it.

In the photoshop I chose the perfect Font for the back cover then I clicked "BOLD" and it made the text bolder.. Easy!
In Discmakers software it's impossible to BOLD it using that FONT text.. So you have to choose another.
Then if you try to copy from photoshop and bring it in on that software is destroys the font and looks terrible...

So step 1 and already there was a problem, I cant no way use the FONT I wanted... I mean really even EMAIL lets you click "BOLD" smile

So more delays....

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Me with Mike, mostly. When I was sending the Deathgrass CD out for manufacture, I looked at DiskMakers, Kunaki, and a couple of others; I ended up not using them. Yes, they all have templates they are happy to have you use, but I didn't want to use their templates: I had my own design (I used to be in the graphic design business), and all I wanted them to do was reproduce mine.

The only outfit I found that wouldn't screw it up was DiskFaktory (they're still in Orange County, CA, I think), the first people I'd ever used to make me a "short run" of CDs. I am pretty sure DiskMakers was cheaper (especially with that JPF discount), but if they were going to screw up my stuff, I wasn't interested.

For the record, I do most of the work in PageMaker; I have a cute li'l program called Click 'n' Design that lets me write in a circle, and I usually use Adobe Photo Deluxe (1996) for photo manipulation (though I have Photoshop and a few others). I take my own photos. I can convert the PageMaker file to either a *.jpg or *.pdf, depending on what the customer wants. And for this project, I did have a couple specialized fonts I wanted to use that the Template People (and most other graphic design shops, for that matter) don't have.

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
