Hey, folks. I am posting one of my own songwriting/vocalist efforts for the first time. I am usually so engaged in promoting other musician's music either through my internet radio station or as their direct rep. (Kyle Wood, Crucial Smith/Eddie Rabbit) that I don't take time to work on my own music.

Anyway, here's my streaming .mp3 link:

http://www.reverbnation.com/tuxedocatsings

I wrote it on my beautiful little blonde Weber mandolin and sing the lead and all harmonies. I am so thankful that a studio musician friend of mine put both the bass line and rhythm guitar tracks on it for me. The song was mixed using free Audacity software and vocals/mando were recorded using a Samson CO1U USB microphone.

The lyrics arise from my interest in retro-futuristic science fiction and steam/dieselpunk like portrayed in the visually stunning movie "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sky_captain/

It's kind of different, I think...:)

Thanks for listening,

And The Ghosts of Rapid Transit Played Words & Music c Steve Sikes-Nova, 2010

1893........

Ancient tears-of-metal-welled-up, from the sea, the moon still a sleep her amberred, pastelled light; was now a shining there

1893........

Seven-and-a-counting years a-new, century, the sun hadn’t set but yet the angels’glow, was-a-shining there,

(And The) Ghosts of Rapid Transit played, (their monster) “Spectre of a Love Parade”;

While-she pulled back down on her faded, cratered, copper shade

Through billowing clouds of blue industrial smoke, the band spoke of that great ecstatic cosmic joke

Then flash a flood arose, (and let whose) ancient nature capture those, who marched along and brightly sang in the toy, automaton; parade

And did we-not all, arise

gathered near on starlit banks

harmonies rose sweet from our ranks

tears of carbon we shed in thanks

moons shone brightly on polished planks

for we were born of stone, cast in light, our story’s told from deep behind; our eyes

(And She says:)

Capture all my starlight as you ride; young dwarves are flyin’, old giants lay dyin’

cogs and wheels turning slowly round as old tunes spin anew, I’m radiating towards you,

to wind us deep into the roundhouse call of the future;

(And He says:)

Stars of blue magenta green and stars of other suns... long the years we’ve run...down the slopes, to bathe in time’s cool waters;

your eyes they’re glowing brightly in the purple dawn; we’ve come to know; the treasures found; for all it takes, for all it sounds,

we’re in their wake, we’re in the round, and far beyond our time...

Hey Cat:

Man, this is great - I love it. Folk rock with an epic feel is just about one of my favorite things smile

I haven't seen the movie, though it is on my list. But I get very cool visions from this - of a world that is on the verge of some huge change - which it was of course smile

Love the harmonies and playing too - bass part is great!

Hey, Scott! Thanks so much for your very positive comments. smile And yeah, having a pro bass line added by my friend in Nashville really moves the song along.

I was somewhat hesitant to post it due to the offbeat lyrical content - dieselpunk/sci-fi - but now I am glad that I did. And yes, do rent "Sky Captain." While I agree with reviewers that while the story line is a little thin the movie is extraordinary from a retro-futurist visual perspective. Airships, robots, 1930s radios all with a modern twist and in cool sepia tones - WOW!

I would love to hear your music as well and will later today.

Very best,

Steve S-N & Tuxedo Cat

I have no idea what this was about, but I enjoyed it. I guess anytime I hear mandolins, bass and harmony I'm going to like it. Good luck with your music.

Anything involving mandolin and bass can't be bad. wink
And I love sci-fi/futuristic scenarios.

Unique and creative, and lovely harmonies. So many fine lines, one of my favourites being: "for we were born of stone, cast in light, our story’s told from deep behind our eyes".

Wendy - Thanks so much for listening! And yes, the lyrics are certainly obscure. I am still not sure exactly where they came from myself except that I am currently re-reading Jules Verne stories and just finished the classic steampunk novel "The Difference Engine." The two genres of music that I know best, believe it or not, are newgrass/progressive bluegrass (New Grass Revival, Crucial Smith, David Via and Corn Tornado, etc.) and progressive rock (Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis with Peter Gabriel, etc.)! There's your mix of mandolin, tempo changes, and odd lyrics. :)Steve S-N

To all who have listened to "Ghosts" so far: Thanks so much for the support for my rather odd music. I want to return the favor by listening to your music, too, but it is going to take me a while. My wife and I live very rurally right on the Chesapeake Bay in southeastern VA and there are no good hi-speed options near our little farmhouse. HughesNet is TERRIBLE and we are in a wireless dead zone so I am using a dial-up provider at 42.5 kbps nominal and, in actually, about 1 to 5 kbps/sec download speed. Thanks again for your interest and support, Steve S-N

Re: Scott Campbell's EP 'Some Assembly Required": It took about 3 hours overnight last night but I downloaded Scott's EP from: http://prosity.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
I listened this morning as I was getting ready for work and greatly enjoyed it. Scott's lyrics are, unlike my ether ramblings on "Ghosts", very-well grounded in real life experiences and delivered in a heart-felt, authentic style. This is real Americana, folks and recommended listening. And Scott, just give me the word and I will add your tunes to my main playlist at "Newgrass, Prog & More!" web radio. Best, Steve S-N

Hey, folks! Tuxedo Cat is wondering if the lead vocals are too far back in the mix on "Ghosts"? He got this feedback from a very well-known music industry friend who really liked the song except for this aspect of its production.

Thanks so much for your ideas and feedback,

Steve & Tux

Sabrinao & DMK - I am so sorry that it took so long to acknowledge your + feedback. Tuxedo Cat and I have been, until recently, stuck in dial-up hell. Now that we have hi-speed again, we plan to catch up with the kind folks who have listened to our music. Also - where can we find your music? :)Steve S-N & Tuxedo Cat

Thanks so much for the encouragement Jen! As I promised, Tuxedo Cat & I will look listen to your music later on today. Any links/.mp3 threads that we should know about? I also notice that you live in Appomattox VA. That's a few hours west of where my wife and I live on the Chesapeake Bay.

Thanks so much for the encouragement Mackie! As I promised above, Tuxedo Cat & I will be listening to your music at Soundclick later on today. We have Soundclick pages, too, that need to be updated so this will be a good opportunity to do both. Best wishes, :)Steve & Tux

And The Ghosts of Rapid Transit Played...
c Steve Sikes-Nova 2011
All Rights Reserved; BMI

"1893........

Ancient tears-of-metal-welled-up, from the sea, the moon still a sleep her amberred, pastelled light; was now a shining there

1893........

Seven-and-a-counting years a-new, century, the sun hadn’t set but yet the angels’glow, was-a-shining there,

(And The) Ghosts of Rapid Transit played, (their monster) “Spectre of a Love Parade”;

While-she pulled back down on her faded, cratered, copper shade

Through billowing clouds of blue industrial smoke, the band spoke of that great ecstatic cosmic joke

Then flash a flood arose, (and let whose) ancient nature capture those, who marched along and brightly sang in the toy, automaton; parade

And did we-not all, arise

gathered near on starlit banks

harmonies rose sweet from our ranks

tears of carbon we shed in thanks

moons shone brightly on polished planks

for we were born of stone, cast in light, our story’s told from deep behind; our eyes

(And She says:)

Capture all my starlight as you ride; young dwarves are flyin’, old giants lay dyin’

cogs and wheels turning slowly round as old tunes spin anew, I’m radiating towards you,

to wind us deep into the roundhouse call of the future;

(And He says:)

Stars of blue magenta green and stars of other suns... long the years we’ve run...down the slopes, to bathe in time’s cool waters;

your eyes they’re glowing brightly in the purple dawn; we’ve come to know; the treasures found; for all it takes, for all it sounds,

we’re in their wake, we’re in the round, and far beyond our time..."
