Malaysia was once a well respected, progressive Islamic country. Not any more. Killed by corrupt power-grabbers belonging to a political party called Barisan Nasional. The Opposition leader and one time Deputy Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim (picture) who was wrongfully put in jail accused of sodomy. He faces another trial of sodomy based on trumped up evidences...the government is determined to jail him so that they can win fixed elections again. I wrote this song to show my frustration! I am trying to send this to Anwar Ibrahim. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=28328&songID=10754105Vox - Michael West Bass, Guitar - Neal Gilbertson Piano - John Jenkins Cello, Organ, Guitar - Stan Mix - Tom Hellsten Pain and RiseCopyright Stan Loh May 13, 2011 Verse 1 What is justice when your law applies, By the colour of your skin, When your truth is a pack of lies, When your stolen wealth rankles in ... yet you must … Gain! Digging for billions more, Gain! Siphoning evermore, Gain! Through devious backdoors…gain! Verse 2 When your talons clutch our backs. It’s better if lives are short, Your double standards all attack, Our wretched souls in court … we cry out … Pain! Today your children pay, Pain! What is their debt today? Pain! Why can’t they lose these chains! Pain! What is our guilt today? Pain! Your bamboo judges sway, Only your cronies gain … Bridge We are not cowards, marching forward, To solve and win back our confidence, For underneath creeps a silent strength, Where man helps man, linked hand in hand! Chorus Oh Rise! Everyone must arise… Rise! Lift up our darkened skies, Make our peace arrive … Oh Rise! Everyone must … Arise! Lift up our darkened skies, Make our peace arrive … Oh Rise! Everyone must … Arise! Lift up our darkened skies, Make our peace arrive …

Stan, You got a real pretty pop song there. I don't doubt that Malaysia is pretty corrupt. And Muslim law isn't the kind of jurisprudence most westerners would find compatible with our sense of morality and justice. I know they've got something called "close proximity" laws which forbid the sexes from mixing publicly. If the authorities are setting up Ibrahim on sodomy charges they're planning on lopping off his head. Good luck with the song. And stay clear of Malaysia.

Hey Stan: I'm not familiar with the situation there but your song gets the idea across, I reckon. Sadly, it could probably fit any number of places in the world. I think this is powerful - I like how it ends with a call to action. Might change a few words like rankle and solve but nothing major - it feels strong.... Scott

Dan ... The penalty for sodomy is life. The last time they put Ibrahim in jail for that, he was there for 6years. All trumped up charges! Yes i hv to be careful too. Am writing another song called "I'm not guilty!".
Thanks for the audition.

Hi Stan,
This song reminds me of the music played in the 60s here in the US regarding the need for peace and equality. Your voice shows a lot of passion for this cause and the mix is done very well. (No music crits from me)
As with Scott, i am not familiar with the situation, and if it were'nt for your introduction I don't think I'd really know what this song is about, and who it was for. I don't know if you wanted to make the lyric more specific to the situation. But if not .. this is a good song about injustice, greed, and corruption everywhere.
good luck .. I hope it makes it to the ears of those who will change things.

Scott ... thanks for listening. BTW I was listening to "Tragedy Knows" this afternoon, you still give me the goosebumps!
Indeed, this song fits in with many countries. But I wrote specifically for Malaysia (my old country).
There's going to be a huge march for Democracy and Better government on July 9th! The theme is "Bersih" or CLEAN ... I hope this song helps.
Thanks!
Stan

Hi PapaG ... thanks so much for your listen and comment. The leader of the Opposition has now a copy of this song, and the piece is circulating among the people who are seeking change. I am glad to have contributed...in a small way.
Watching for July 9th (this weekend).
Thanks!
Stan

Stan,
There is nothing like passion and heartache to bring out a song like this.
I think the music on this is beautiful and so well done.
When you said you wrote this out of frustration, I was worried it would be upsetting and angry, but there is a wonderful way you tell your concerns with such care, this song doesn't break things down, but begs for justice and healing.
Very nice song.

Tammy ...
Sometimes one needs to be angry to bring home a point. In this case we need solidarity amongst the masses, we need bravery, we need compassion for those who have already been unjustly arrested (and maybe tortured).
Thanks for your support. These next few days will be critical.

Just as a report...on July 10th a peaceful march of more than 100,000 multi racial citizens of Malaysia took onto the streets, it was a highly successful even. All the violence came from the police. More than 1,500 were arrested. The march was for free and fair elections!
Stan.
