Hello, my name is Robert Ames and I have been a musician ever since I was 6 years old (at least from what I can remember). When I was in grade school I always enjoyed those wonderous times of playing the recorder and going to choior classes, it was always the best part of my day. As I got older I joined in on marching band and jazz band. In marching band I wanted to play drums and tried out for them but the snare drum was too high and I kept hitting the rim so I just chose to play the clarinet, though in jazz band I was still a part of the drums and also took place of playing some trumpet parts with the clarinet. At the age of 8 or some time around there, I had already known how to play drums, clarinet, recorder, and sing.
One year for christmas my grandmother got me a keyboard, that is a lot of fun. After some time I got a guitar when I was about 16 years old and started learning how to play that. At the age of 19 I got my first bass. Today I am 22 years old and know how to play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, clarinet, recorder, and sing, among many other instruments that are in the percussion and string field. I am currently learning the violin and am doing alright at that.

Throughout all the years of playing music and making my own songs, there has always been one major problem that I have been having. I can't read music....sucks I know, but that doesn't stop me from making music that sounds wonderful. People have the ability to play by ear and from their imagination, but the knowledge of reading music is still essential to the world of music. I am currently learning more and more about reading music. I can understand music notation pretty well, its just the names and scales etc that I'm having a hard time with. It doesn't help that each instrument has its own place on the chromatic scale and one note on one sheet of music may not be the same note on another for a different instrument, such as the note C on a trumpet part and the note C on a saxaphone are in different spots. Oh well, I will get it at some point.

My goal is to become a composor and write symphony scores that I can use along with my music. My secondary goal is to be able to play all the parts myself to keep down costs of having to use so many people, and so far I'm off to a great start. My band name is to be Majestyc Symphony, keep an eye out for me in the future. I thank you for your time and all who have read this to give me a warm welcome.

Robert (aka Shade)

hi robert, welcome. i enjoyed your introduction and can definately relate to the part about not being able to read music, sounds like you know more about it than i do though and i agree, it does not have to stop anyone from MAKING good music. looking forward to enjoying some of your compositions.

cheers, dmk

You are quite accomplished at a young age Robert so you definitely must have the virtue of self discipline, good for you!! You are quite literally a one man band. Don't be frustrated that you can't read music yet, you can still write music in your head. Here's to a rewarding musical career, enjoy your time at JPF and may all your dreams come true. I don't know where you stand on the lyrical side of things, but if you have a piece of music that you can't write lyrics for, there are many people here who might take a look at it if you post the piece on the MP3 board and ask if anyone's interested. Welcome!!

Best,
Lynn smile
