Hey Guys,
Was just looking at my Tunecore account, and it appears I made a couple of dollars from internet streams. ( literally )
They don't say which particular sites paid for streaming, but it appears that the average stream generates 1c - 1.5 cents per song.
That's way above the PRO suggested rate, of something like 0.09 CENTS per play.
It doesn't sound like much, but it all sure can add up.
Does anyone know who these sites are ? I'd rather direct traffic towards them, then my own site, where streaming is free.
Thanks.
cheers, niteshift

Hey Nite:
A few bucks (literally) for me too. Most of mine are through Spotify. The rest are from Napster. CDBaby distributed to both of them....

Niteshift,
Do you really get 0.09 cents per stream? It must be more around 0.00009 (joking but only just)... and if you can find who pays you 0.09 cents, let me know, I'll send all my music there!!!

I at least get to give La Femme a wee-bit-of-an-elbow & say "See..all those hours in the studio are finally Payin'-Off"...

Yes, we get streaming income from CD Baby via Spotify, Rhapsody, Amazon, iTunes and Napster but the amounts are embarrassingly small. One occasional download is more lucrative than about 100 streams.

Yeah, I gotta agree Colin. But at least we're making progress. At one time, paid streaming for the artist ? No way. Now with mobile streaming devices, and the new business model of "music on demand, but you don't need to own it, just rent it", I think it's something that can't be dismissed. It would be my guess that in a few years time, streaming revenue will increase to a respetable level. I'll buy ya a beer if I'm wrong. cheers, niteshift

i can't resist interjecting my sense of wonderment here. i've had a notion however slight that money could be made thru this media. when i first put songs on song click several years ago i was like the proverbial little kid standing there waiting for a lolipop but over time i fell into the slough of despond over the big zero in my sales account and realized how foolish i had been to think i could actually, finally make money on my songs. reading these various comments by you fellow artists who obviously are way more savy than yours truely, i again find a small light of hope flickering, or at least wanting to flicker on. but then the question also wants asking, sorry for being so stupid about all of this internet stuff, but am i to understand that soundclick may be making money from my songs while i go unrewarded with exception of my silly vainity? and how does one learn the ropes in regard to this squeezing pennies out of the computer via my mp3 songs. i'll have to try and learn something more than how to write a song, still haven't learned that properly , now, boo hoo, this!!! ha ha. my poor little brain may just up n burst, yuk.

We use CDBaby for Justice's songs - She has had a couple hundred thousand streams and we have been getting a check about once a month from CDBaby. CDBaby shows each stream from each of the approx 12 digital distribution outlets they use (like Napster, itunes, spotify, zune etc).

Well... I've received hundreds of dollars from Spotify streaming alone. I have seven albums out, the first one going up on CD Baby in 2005. I've earned over 100x that total from all partners combined (iTunes is by far the #1.) Don't believe the hype that streaming doesn't pay. I have a very small following (relatively speaking) and I don't perform live, so I can't even fathom how much artists like Lady GaGa are making.

It is getting there. Justice is now getting about 40,000 streams a month for her two cd's. Interestingly, most of these are in Europe. We use CDBaby and I think they do a great job.

Regarding the amount --- Justice is now getting a check for roughly $150 every three weeks. (It all goes into a trust fund for college).

I know folks who get 1000's of dollars for streaming and they aren't famous, just hard working active touring indie artists relentless working. They have REAL fanbases (i.e. people who have purchased their albums and/or bought tickets to their live shows) in the 5000-15000 range, which are doable numbers for anyone with talent and persistence in their work ethic. In fact I spent the day with an artist (won't say the name but will share some stats) who has 7K fans, does 3 shows a week of varying sizes, has sold 20K albums over the past 5 years, makes 6 figures a year in gross earnings (i.e. before expenses). This artist also earns some radio play checks (very small),some streaming checks (little better than Andrew, but not huge) but has been able to make music full time, support a manager, PR person, web person, and other team members (including volunteers) and has done it all themself doing music that is never going to get signed to a label (it's not really radio format ready, though very good for what they do in their very talented and deep "genre.") It's a LOT of work. But they are the boss and doing what they love. They may literally be maxed out in terms of sheer numbers so I am helping this artist improve what they get (and make) out of what they have as well as improve operating expenses. This person is also, like Andrew, a JPF Award winner. For me, if you can cross that bar (or get close) you most likely have what it takes to make a full time living. But the "rockstar" myth isn't likely to happen for many in the entire world, so artists like this live in the REAL world and in my opinion are extremely successful.
