I've asked something similar before, but...
If your tip jar is 3/4 full, do you think people are more likely to tip (because other people did), less likely to tip (because there's a lot of tips in there already), or it doesn't matter either way?

It may depend how big the jar is.
Personally, I don't think you want it too full. You want some money in there to remind people to tip and so people will think others have already tipped. But you don't want too much because some will think that "he doesn't really need my tip, he's doing alright already." Plus a lot of money is more likely to tempt thieves.

I agree with Andy...keep a few bills in there but don't let it get more than 25% full, IMO. Empty it partway if it gets more than 50% full.

I don't recall ever having that problem. However I would tend to not let it get too full. The one time I did have a good tip jar going somebody helped themselves! Or, I helped someone out that needed it?

I know this topic is over a month old, but since I'm here:
I haven't noticed any difference due to the tip jar being too full - actually, the difference I've noticed is when the tip jar is too empty. But, once there's a little cash in there, people open up their wallets a bit more easily...
