In May I bit the bullet and bought an iMac, mainly for graphics and music purposes.

I now want to transfer BIAB (which I'd bought in October for the PC) to my iMac, and installed Parallels5. It installed just fine, but my WinXP installation disc (SP3) just wouldn't come to the party, despite several attempts to upload the programme so that it would link up with Parallels.

In the meantime, I've learned that the WinXP disc, having been included with my Dell PC, is never likely to work. Dell engineers things so that the system will only work on other Dells.

Question: Is there some way to set up Parallels5 (or any other WinXP>Mac transfer programme without needing to install an XP installation disc? Or could I obtain something from the internet?

For $159, I could cross-grade to BIAB for Mac, but several of the functions don't work on a Mac. I'm thinking of getting the Parallels5 Desktop for Mac edition, but would need to get it from the US, where it's only $99. Here in the Netherlands, it's 320 (roughly equivalent to $450)!

In the meantime, thought I'd just ask here whether anyone could propose a different solution. (I know there are other transfer programmes, e.g. VisualBox and VMWareFusion, but they require installation discs as well.)

Thanks! smile

Thanks, Tom. smile Yes, I'd googled and researched VMWare Fusion, VirtualBox and Parallels, but they all require that darn XP installation disc. Was hoping there might be an alternative, or a way to download the XP system without it costing a fortune.

I'll check out a few of the links in the list you sent, though. Never know what you might find. wink

Donna, you may want to go to the Apple website and go to the support page and ask on the discussion forum. I don't know how to do it either. If the XP system came as part of a bundle, there may a restriction on it to work only in that context.

As a new mac owner, you are entitled to support. Call the help line and ask them. They are usually pretty good about helping. Also, is there an Apple store there in your city? If there is, you are entitled to customer support from them as well.

Thanks, Jean. I managed to get a definitive answer a couple of hours ago from someone on a Mac forum. The upshot is that I'll need to contact Microsoft to see what the deal is about getting another licence so that I can use it on my Mac with Parallels. I'll go that road if it doesn't cost more than what I'd pay to crossgrade BIAB. So, one step at a time, eh? wink

Yup, OEM (Dell) licences are intended only for the machine they came on. You'd need a "retail" copy of XP (or 7 since boxed retail XP might be getting scarce).

VM-Ware does have a utility that can make an image of an existing machine as it is, and then it's possible to use that instead of actually doing a fresh install.

http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ - I've used it to get an image of a dead Acer machine for use on a Mac Mini using VirtualBox, though even as an IT person, it was a bit of a tetchy process.

My guess is (unless you can find a used or grey-market copy) that BIAB cross grade may be the better route.

Before getting super involved in all that though, take a bit of a break and look at GarageBand - it came with your mac. It may do a fair amount of what you need to do, though obviously, it won't open existing BIAB files. It depends on how invested in the BIAB eco-system you are.

And there's always the possibility of obtaining an unused retail copy of XP from someone on eBay.

XP licences are very rare nowadays but XP pro licences can be purchased on Ebay UK for under 20......do not know whether they work or are legal but worth looking at.

Just Plain Quotes
"Our enemies may not be who we think they are. They are not Major Label monopolies. The world will always have 'majors.' They are not big corporations who own everything. The world will always have 'big' ones. Our enemies are not the loud mouthed critics telling us we will fail. The world will always have those too. Our most dangerous enemy is our own quiet acceptance of the fate we perceive these entities have mapped out for us. The only danger is our own complacency, or inactivity, and our willingness to believe so called experts who tell us we 'can't' and that our grim fate is inevitable." -Brian Austin Whitney
