Well, I didn't see anything much about plants and stuff, but I heard you all know..all kinds of things (Specially Jean and Tricious <G>)

Anyway, I've got this long ridge of new dirt that's not gonna be practical to mow and I wanta' plant ground cover on it.
\ I've got some starts of Vinca, but I'm not real fond of it.
I read that creeping thyme could be used for ground cover and it blooks nicely in the pic <G>

Does anyone know much about it. I know it'a an herb and used for this and that. We seem to be maybe on the edge of it's hardiness zone

Appreciate any help
Wy

Hummmm. Don't know much about it except that I grew thyme in a hanging basket last year. Worked well like that. Some Rosemary might be an option, too.

Here is a nice little article about it .

http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1137/

Another one said that all thyme is edible. It said that creeping thyme has a peppery taste but as an herb it is not as strong as common thyme. The articles I read mentioned lemon and orange thyme. (Their fragrance smells like their names.)

One of the other articles mentioned that creeping thyme can even be walked on and survive. Sounds like a cool choice for that strip you mentioned.

One thing though, another article said it doesn't do as well when planted from seed.

Good morning Tricious,
Right, it said thyme does well in baskets also. Matterafact I'll probably put a couple in a basket. One place that Miss Jean directed me to, said that it really propogated best by cuttings..
It seems there are many different kinds of even the creeping variety . I bid on some at Ebay but I'm going to see if he knows what particular variety it is.

Thanks for responding. I hope you're recovered from your vacation <G>

Hi Jean,
A real good article or several articles.
I seems there are several varieties of Creeping Thyme with different scents, different colors. Some don't have much odor but have beautiful blooms. Some smell good but don't bloom so well and then various combinations.
There may be a "Common Creeping Thyme" though.
I'm still investigating.
Seeds are cheap but plamts around a $ apiece. However you can take cuttings from what you have to make plants.

There's an old Irish-Celtic song called "The Wild Mountain Thyme" or "Will You Go Lassie Go" ,that I love
Thanks Jean

'Scuse me. You're close, Wy.

Wymania. Wyman + Maniac = Wymania. Hehehe! That name suits you.

P.S. I'll tell you how bad that vacation was. My husband says he will never go on another vaction with me, ever. We got stuck in a blizzard in Moriarty, New Mexico and spent the night in the car one night. Didn't get to bed till 0630 the next am after driving to Grants, NM because all the hotels were booked due to the weather east of there. A few hours later, I woke up with a relapse of the flu. Had to go to the ER in Grants, NM. 2 days later he got the flu. We did 5,000 miles in 10 days both of us sick. It was miserable..

Creeping thyme is wicked ground cover! We have grasses that will overrun and dominate every square foot of our property, creeping thyme is the ONLY thing that holds them at bay. Smells great, you can walk all over it, transplant by just ripping off a bunch and re-burying it. I love it!

Thyme slips away, Joe. I think that's how the song goes. I think it's about thyme I get out of this computer chair and hit it around here.

Ya'll have a great day!!

Tricia, that is probably because somebody else wrote that song. If I'da done it, I wouldn't have ignored the creep factor.

Thyme that is one herb I grew 2 years ago in a clay pot. It has a nice smell to it and you can use for many dishes. Placed in glass jar...lasts forever.

You know there's an old show, from England called

Rosemary and Thyme; Two Detectives who also happen to be gardeners. Clues and bodies always found in these large English gardens.

It use to be on CBC.

Hey, I love Celtic songs. Haven't heard that W. But Marc Gunn, singer/songwriter, found him on the web; does Celtic Songs, Whiskers in the Jar. Album on cats. Really funny like The Catniped Cat.

Hey is catnip just a type of dry grass, cats go nuts, rolling all over the place. As you are a gardener, you tell me.

Not a grass Miz Petra, It's an herb--has some medicinal uses also I think. I think that's it that grows wild here a little, though it doesn't look quite like the pictures Google had. Anyway, cats love it though only 50 % of them are affected according to Google-dried, its used to stuff cat toys also.

Thanks for the reply. My cats go nuts, rolling over it and then end up fighting each other; chasing each other around.
They eat it as well.
Magical Herb; must be a certain property in the Herb that stimulates them.

If you grow this Wyman, big business in it. Cat Industry is Billion Dollar Business!!!

Nope, on growing, except it grows wild here--At least I think that's it though it looks slightly different. Haven't got any cats. I'll put some of it in a bowl an ask someone who has cats

Wyman, no cats? They keep the mice away and any other rodents.
Do you have any pets?

Miz. Petra
P.S: What is turtle pie, can't be real turtles, Tricia was talking in shout box. Can't do shout, pc won't allow, on older pc now...not the best.

Anyways,

Talk to you later,

Hey Miz Petra,
Right , on not real turtles. I was familiar with the little chocolate turtles with caramel and pecans inside--yummy. but real rich . I really wasn't familiar with turtle pie, but figured it was just a larger concoction of the same thing--turns out. not quite the same ingredients but quits similar--the recipe I saw called for s bunch of oreo cookies in it also
Sinfully rich.

That doesn't sound right on an older pc not allowing ths shout but maybe possible

I'm surprised no one has suggested shipping some of the herb to Belgium. Isn't it said that thyme heals Walloons?
