I love this web site, but the lyrics critique section is not very active. Only one or two people responded to two of my songs. And to one, no one did.
I have critiqued several songs since I joined, but there hasn't been much activity there either. Other people don't join in. I enjoy helping other writers. This is not a criticism. I'm just wondering why this is so and how it can become more active.

HiDee Mz Sylvia!
I hadda really SEARCH to find one of yours TO Critique...& have done-so.
Truth be told, most ALL of us Lyricists are always Short on Time..& Long on Lyrics-to-be-Posted/"Thank-Yous" to be sent-back.
Critiquing your "First Class Male" in-depth took me over 45 minutes. Have YOU spent 45 minutes critiquing anyone's there yet?
If so, Good..you'll maybe get something out of the Critiquing Process. If not, remember that ol' adage Ya Reap What Ya Sow.
Lastly..DO read-up on some Songwriting Craft Books...they're great & filled with Insight that many an average Critiquer may never give you. Also..Listen Intently to what's on the Radio...for clues as to "What's Currently Working"..as well as "Who's".
Good Luck, Big Hugs, & Best Wishes, Stan

Hi Sylvia,
I looked at your lyrics and thought about critiquing them but decided not to because:
I know nothing about you at all - I don't know if you are sixteen or 60????? Your profile tells me nothing.
I have no idea what style music you are thinking of - children's songs, rap, country????
The lyrics don't fit the formats I expect so I don't know if they are very creative for a certain genre, or if you have not done your homework and learned the basics of songwriting.
So I moved on to something I can relate to......

Hi Colin
I can understand not relating to a lyric as a reason for not critiquing but not knowing personal details about who wrote it (or even musical style) is surely less of an issue. Lyrics either work or they don’t

Nigel,
You are right, lyrics either work or they don't. I was just offering some insight as to why she had not received any critiques........ If she is an eighteen year old rapper, I probably don't have anything constructive to tell her. If she is writing the next country hit, I might be able to shed some light.

I gave you what I thought was an in-depth critique on your lyric, "The Clique" two weeks ago that you have posted on two separate boards. You haven't responded back to the two of us who did critique it, so I can only wonder if maybe you've forgotten that it's also posted on the Lyric 3 board, as well as the Lyric 1 Board, or my critique was not useful to you. If you respond to us, it bumps your thread up to the top, keeping it on the page, and also acknowledges those who took the time to read your writing. I know it was helpful to me as a writer to do the critique, to think through how the ideas you had could flow in a way that would really get your point across. So critiquing really is a benefit for more than just the writer of the piece.
A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. -- Abraham Maslow, American Psychologist

I think it's obvious reading the follow ups why more critiques haven't been done. Though she is free to post without doing critiques or even thanking people, she won't get many more if that is her approach. But often someone has to learn to give, they don't do it automatically. And some never learn.
Posting the same lyric on more than one board, however, is breaking the ONLY actual rule on our critique sites (other than not personally attacking someone without provocation or telling lies or half truths which will get you attacked by me personally). But I digress.
The more you give, the more you get. In many ways, often not obvious, but no less important.

Kristi,
I answered you great critique. No sure if it was on Lyric 1 or 3. I told you how much I appreciated it.
Yes I'm doing critiques of others.
To everyone: I'm in mid-life and all my songs are pop. I'm sorry if I hadn't given you enough info on me.
I appreciate your comments. Thanks.
