The goal of our "Song Challenges" is to write songs/lyrics on demand within set parameters. We don't critique each other's songs in this thread (but you can say you like someone's song if you want to.) Please post your original works. If you have already written a song/lyric that fits within the parameters, please feel free to post it.
For this challenge, you need verses and a chorus/refrain. You must use the hook "You weren't the ....." in the chorus. You may also use the hook in the present tense, "You aren't the ...".
Have fun!

Hi Jean, Given it's Valentine's Day I thought love was an appropriate theme. This challenge was alittle different but I believe I have completed my assignment teacher. "You Weren't The Man Mama Wanted"Country/Female Vocal w/twang (needs melody) (c)2011 Lynn OrloffMy mama started sayin' at a young age "Now honey there’s boys and there’s men You wanta’ find someone respected Who’ll treat you the best that he can You‘d do best to fetch you a someone Whose got him a college degree Who’ll buy you a house with a yard and a pool And lots of your pretty girl things" Lift Well mama she sure tried to guide me, we all know our mama’s know best But when I saw you in that pick up, felt my heart leap outside of my chest You weren’t the man mama wanted But God seemed to have His own plans You aren’t the man mama prayed for But baby you’re my kind of manEvery nite she would pray by her bedside "Good Lord help her make the right choice Not some cowboy who ain’t got no future Drivin' tractor and ridin' some horse She’s deservin’ of somethin’ much bigger Then a riggety white picket fence Round a tiny white house down some dirt road down south Lord please help her use common sense" Lift I listened outside of her bedroom, knew by heart one by one every prayer But when I saw you in those blue jeans, I just didn’t seem much to care You weren’t the man mama wanted But God surely had His own plans You aren't the man mama prayed for But baby you're my kind of manBridge Oh it took alittle time to make my mama see My country boy is just the thing her little darlin' needs No you weren't the man mama prayed for But I see how her heart took a turn Though you aren't the man she expected Seems she had her a lesson to learn

My first Challenge song--KIND OF A VALENTINE SONG, maybe you could SAY?
YOU AREN’T THE FIRST ©2011 Mackie Humphries
V1 Baby you got me Breathin’ hard again Have me beggin’ for Your sweet lovin’ With one more touch My heart will sing Your warm kisses Feel like a dream.
CH You aren’t the first - to pull me in Then spin a web - so... inviting Work your magic - close to perfect Then soothe away - all my stress You aren’t the first - to pull me in
V2 Baby don’t go yet Take a little rest Never felt like this Girl you're the best Can’t help but smile Laying in the dark You are the one Who owns my heart.
CH You aren’t the first - to pull me in Then spin a web - so ...inviting Work your magic - close to perfect Then soothe away - all my stress You aren’t the first - to pull me in
BR Under your spell still in a trance Give me a call and another dance.
CH You aren’t the first - to pull me in Then spin a web - so... inviting Work your magic - close to perfect Then soothe away - all my stress You aren’t the first - to pull me in.
TAG You aren’t the first - to pull me in.

You weren't the only one who loved me But you were the only love I need You weren't the only one to want me But you were the only one for me
I don't have time to write more at the mo but I like these challenges. I shall revisit.

There should be more takers for this every week/month etc. Clearly we all think we're too good to need to do this. I love creative challenges.
How about you take it up a notch and we write some lyrics, decide on our favourite lyrics and then we all write our own melody to it.

Hi, James. I don't know that people think they are too good to need it, although some may feel that way. Perhaps they just aren't interested in the hook. Also some people feel they have to let the "muse" move them and are unaware that challenges like these actually train the "muse" to come when she is called.
We have had some challenges in the past where people have posted lyrics and others wrote music to it. Wouldn't hurt to have another one. The only problem I have with that approach is knowing what to do if the lyricist doesn't like a particular melody and the composer would like to make it an "official" collaboration. Or perhaps the lyricist likes the melody but the composer doesn't want to go further with it. Any ideas to circumvent that?

Dear Jean:
I am new here and read your post with interest. I see no one has answered/addressed this issue...maybe someone will soon, hopefully.

Hello Jean. Just came across this thread and if it is still open I will contribute. In fact since it is snowing and the satellite is down I will write it now. Here it goes: [7:14 to 7:50]
You Weren't The One (I Thought You Were) (03.21.11)
(V) Pulled into Casey’s just past eleven. Had hit some other bars, some pretty hard. Grabbed a stool the moment one was empty. Spotted her in those tight black leotards. Sauntered over with help from other patrons. Tapped her lightly preparing my surprise. But when she turned around I stumbled backwards. Caught off guard by the death look in her eyes.
(Chorus) You weren't the one I thought you were. Now my cheeks are wet with tears. Think I'll take that keg right there, goin’ to need a lot more beer. Believed I had a betting chance, but now it’s all a blur. You weren’t the one, there goes my fun. The one I thought you were.
(V) Stood around and waited for another. Another stool arrived surprisingly. Took my seat, the beer the bar-keep gave me. Sat back down and waited patiently. A group of gals over in a corner were laughing loud and havin’ a great time. Took my glass and act and tripped on over. Back at the bar I sucked a sour lime.
(Bridge) Come closing time I had too climb back up and out the door. Headed home, all alone, still don’t know why for? Caught a glimpse, of this handsome prince, gave myself a gr-r-r! “You weren’t the one, there weren’t none. The one I thought you were.

I'd say you just roll with it. If he, she, they don't like it then oh well. If it's meant to be then it will be. Let fear not hold us back. As Nike say: Just do it.
