I Own It

Verse 1:
Itís newfangled, better than a rocket Ė
evíry kind of bell and whistle, gear and sprocket,
futuristic gizmos, microscopic gadgets,
things that ainít invented yet Ė this baby has it.
A zillion miles a minute, man canít even clock it.
Lifts a hundred tons and fits inside your pocket.

Yeah, in my dreams, itís so sweet.
Just canít wait Ďtil itís complete.

I own it, though the wheels donít turn.
I own it - count the crash and burn.
I own it, every single drop.
Itís a powerful ache . . . it just donít stop.

Verse 2:
Listen to this Ė itís so outrageous
this puppyís addictive and contagious.
Sheís ready to roll Ė one proud creation
Ďcept for one miniscule complication Ė
it burns a nasty blend of faith and ancient curse,
I scream towards immortality in damned reverse.

Repeat Chorus:

Verse 3:
Fancy dreams and fine intentions
one fierce mother Ė yeah, my invention.
Years of sweat Ė all of my hard labor.
The better part of my soul I gave her.
I could never sell it Ė ahh for what itís worth.
Evíry dream thatís good as gold is cheap as dirt.

And . . Repeat Chorus x 2

Itís a powerful ache . . . it just donít stop.

Wow.... incredible writing. First verse really drew me in, Rich! And what rhyme schemes. You were able to pull it off; it took me back a top country charter two years ago which did all its plays on scientific words.... Who'd ever thunk it was possible. This one just kept me curious the whole time: What the heck is "it"? This is great!

Third line is a tongue twister.
If they make a back to the future 4, then you're in!!!!!!!

Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it. "It" is hopefully nebulous enough to be whatever the listener wants it to be - I think we all have a dream of some sort to keep us going.

I'm sure this lyric will be too wordy for some people's taste, but hopefully enough other people will react as you did.

Thanks for taking time to read and comment.

Hi Rich, thought you might appreciate this.

The Marvelous Toy----By Tom Paxton

When I was just a wee little lad full of health and joy
My father homeward came one night and gave to me a toy
A wonder to behold, it was, with many colors bright
And the moment I laid eyes on it it became my heart's delight

It went "zip" when it moved and "bop" when it stopped
And "whirr" when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

The first time that I picked it up, I had a big surprise
For right on its bottom were two big buttons that
Looked like big green eyes.
I first pushed one and then the other, and then I twisted its lid
And when I set it down again, this is what it did:

It first marched left and then marched right
And then marched under a chair
And when l looked where it had gone, it wasn't even there:
I started to sob and my daddy laughed, for he knew that I would find,
When l turned around, my marvelous toy, chugging from behind.

Well, the years have gone by too quickly, it seems,
I have my own little boy
And yesterday I gave to him my marvelous little toy.
His eyes nearly popped right out of his head
And he gave a squeal of glee,
Neither one of us knows just what it is,
but he loves it, just like me.

and this

just some of the things your song lyric brought to mind

This is definately a lyric that needs to be practiced to sing without stumbling. Hopefully that won't make it too unmarketable.

Thanks for posting the Tom Paxton song - I enjoyed reading it very much and I can see why my lyric brought it to mind. Big kid or little kid, we still like our toys.

This is about the sixth rewrite and about all that's left of the original is the chorus and the line you pointed out as your favorite - I'm glad I kept it as I chopped and rearranged.

Thanks for the kind remarks. I'm sure I don't think in a higher gear than you or anyone else on these boards. It might not seem like it on the surface, but this one's not from the head, but all from the heart. Judging from the comments so far, I think I might finally be done with the writing on this one and ready to bring it to life with some music.
