We’ve Been Bought © 2010 Cindy Prince
If you think it’s still a democracy I’ve got news for you The corporate world’s the boss And there’s not much you can do
It doesn’t really matter If you lean to the right or left Americans have been hijacked And what a hell of a theft
Chorus We’ve been bought With deep pockets and lies Our vote sold Is it really such of a surprise? All they hear Is what the lobbyists have to say We’ve been bought Our voice is fading away
I hate to tell you But I figure you ought to know We’ve been cancelled From our own TV show
Repeat chorus
Bridge Maybe I am a tad too pessimistic I’m just tryin’ to be realistic
There’s no compromise No finding a middle ground America’s on the guillotine Fadin’ without a sound
Repeat chorus

Cindy, You speak the truth. A good point for a song to begin at. The only thing I disagree with - and this is more about attitude - is that I think we can still do something: Fight back. And if enough of us join together, we might even amaze ourselves and the world. So I'm not quite ready to give up hope yet.
I salute you on this song. Good job.

Hi Cindy,
This is a nice write but if you want a commercial song you'll need a new subject, lol these don't do very well because no one wants to take a risk! Well, I take that back some well established name COULD but it's risky.
Also I saw this verse a s a filler…
I hate to tell you But I figure you ought to know We’ve been cancelled From our own TV show
Or maybe I just don't get it, lol it could be me!!

Hi Cindy. I feel and share your views on this topic. Even here in Canada I feel like we have been voted off of our own reality show.
Lyrically you cover good points. What you need now is driving music to push it home.
Good luck with it and I hope the writing of it help ya.
Take care.

Thanks Dottie and Doug. I was wanting to say something about the media in this one. I think I can word it better though. And it does need some strong music. Anyone? Cindy

Cindy and I have begun a collab on this lyric and I am posting my beginning of a re-write with her permission. Have also put together a melody so we now have something to use as we continue.
We are looking for more input and comments.

Chorus We’ve been bought With deep pockets and lies Our votes been sold, should we be surprised? All they hear Is what the lobbyists have to say We’ve been bought Our voice has gone away.
(V) There’s seems to be no compromise. Where’s the middle ground? It seems so un American, to give up without a sound. Our heads are on the guillotine, don’t tell me that I’m right. Americans. Yes. Americans don’t give up without a fight.

Doug & Cindy, You guys are getting there! I'm on the run and just took a quick look. But I think you're on to something. One thing I would suggest in the first verse, rather than say "and there's nothing we can do" - which is negative and defeatist, not there's not good reason to be - but I'd prefer the opening verse to be like a fire bell, sounding the alarm.
"If you think it’s a democracy I’ve got news for you The corporate world's in charge, and they're turning the screws It doesn't really matter If you're on the left or right They've robbed us blind Like some thief in the night

Well don't stop there Dan this is good. I can see, and it had been mentioned, where the negativity of this lyric could hinder rather then help. But on the other side, and what I am trying to do with the music, I can also see how the frustration of the "singer" should be maintained. In all honesty I do not believe that we have a say it what goes on in any of our governments other then casting our votes BUT unless we get 100% of the people voting, something no government really wants IMO, there is little we can do. This lyric by Cindy is 1: an exercise for her to vent (and something I relate to as well) or 2: a old fashion protest song BUT then I can see trying for some kind or positive solution at the lyrics end. Hope you make your way back and supply us with more of your thoughts and suggestions. Douglas Oh! And Cindy you are welcomed.

Cindy & Doug, Here's a few more lines you might find some way to use.
There’s profits on Wall Street There’s profits in their wars There’s profits to be made Off the middle class and poor When we protest on the streets They tell us to be still When the deficit explodes They hand us the bill

Cindy & Doug, If any of this helps, feel free to use it. My contribution to the cause.
If you think it's a democracy I've got news for you Corporations are in charge, And they're turning the screws It doesn't really matter If you're on the left or right They own the politicians They own 'em day and night
There's profits on Wall Street There's profits in their wars There's profits to be made Off the middle class and poor When we protest on the streets They tell us to be still When the deficit explodes They hand us the bill
They wave the flag on Sunday And when Monday morning comes They eat eggs and buttered toast While we dine on crumbs They read the Wall Street Journal They sip la Bleau Absinthe While the rest of us clip coupons And worry 'bout the rent
They're thieves, they stole our jobs They shipped them overseas They took the working man And cut him down at the knees "Why hire an American" They chuckle as they say, "Hell, I can get a Chinaman For a couple o' dollars a day"

Cindy, You and Doug do whatever you want with the lyrics. Use part, all or rewrite the lyrics to fit the idea you came up with for the song. I'm just offering a helping hand to move your song along. I think I read Doug is adding music. If you get bogged down there, let me know. I haven't tried putting music to this because he's already doing it.
Keep up the good work.

Cindy and Doug,
Wow--I'm loving the progression with this one. The ysay not to write or sing about politics--but sooner or later ya have to. LOl. I wrote one awhile back called bailout blues and then more recently--pack your bags. These really come from the heart as does your song. Also I like the sugs from Dan. You have the making for a great one. I like the comments about fighting back--that was my nit on the first version--that it needed a bit of us not giving up. Oh I agree withe the sentiment as well. Great one here, Roger

Thank you Roger. The fighting back line came to me when I sat back and thought of Americans in general and what their history illustrated. Seem an apt thing to say.
