I am steaming myself silly and glad I don't have to perform. But I notice putting on a Breathe-Right strip really helped me breathe the steam up my nose... I wonder if anyone had to do a gig or session with congestion, and tried putting on one of these things. Did it help? My throat is scratchy right now so I can't really test, but if it were a more borderline case, and I "had" to sing, I wonder if it would make a difference.

I'll be honest with you...I hung out with a friend over the weekend who was sneezing, coughing and just FIRING GERMS all over the place, and before I even left his house, I called my doctor and requested a Methylprednisone steroid pack and some antibiotics before I even came down with the symptoms because I have a very important gig to sing at this Sat. night. So, after a few hours of taking them, the steroids cleared up everything and at band practice last night, I was singing like a bird (after coming down with the symptoms Tues. picked up the meds on Weds. morning)

So that's my route...if it's an important gig (and btw, my friend is a big fish in Nashville and he said that's what they all do down there, go to the doc and get steroids) meds win over anything else. If it's not a big deal, rock and rye in some hot tea with lemon.

Dang, Polly, you don't mess around, do you? I don't even know what you're talking about, but I'm glad you take care of yourself. smile

I know one lady I used to hang out with, she had a big trained blues voice but she would show up for her steady every week no matter how she was feeling, cold or no cold. She had a song with a big money note in it...held it for 22 seconds usually. I timed her at 27 seconds once. Well, one day she had been training her dog and came in hoarse as heck, no business going on. Audience was wincing in sympathy. She gets to the big note, it goes up, it goes down in about 5 secs. Just heartbreaking. Don't do that to yourself (or your fans who care about you). No $ is worth it.

Polly, IMHO, that's a dangerous thing to be doing, using Methylprednisolone (methylprednisone) to stave off a cold and the doctor is not doing you justice.
The conditions the corticosteroids are used to treat are much more severe than a common cold. They can also cause you to become diabetic, particularly if you are predisposed to diabetes.

I'm well versed in their use because I used high dose Prednisone for some time and then switched to high dose Methylprednisolone use for treating the cancer I have. I was on them for seven or eight years and I'm currently on a completely different schedule with Dexamethasone, about 10 times more potent.

Additional Side Effects :
1. Nausea, vomiting, stomach irritation. Take this medication with food or milk. If these effects persist or your stools become black and tarry, contact your doctor.
2. Headache, dizziness, insomnia, restlessness, depression, anxiety, unusual moods, acne, thinned skin, increased sweating, increased hair growth, reddened face, easy bruising, tiny purple skin spots, irregular or absent menstrual periods. If these effects persist or are severe, contact your doctor.
3. Skin irritation, itching, or swelling. Contact your doctor at once.
4. Long-term therapy problems: weight gain, swollen feet, ankles, and lower legs; muscle pain and weakness; eye pain; vision problems; puffy skin; a cold or infection that lasts a long time. Contact your doctor.

No, but I put a clothespin on my nose to sing bluegrass.

Jeff, what don't you know about? The meds, or Rock n Rye? Rock n Rye is a liquor with real fermented fruit in it. People around these parts SWEAR by it and I've tried it myself when sick. It does work. As far as straining my voice, I'm too smart for that! wink

Dak, I'm so sorry to hear about your cancer. I don't take steroids but maybe once a year or once every two years...usually when I get a bad sinus infection or poison ivy that has spread like crazy. So, there's no danger of what you're talking about with my light use of it. But I'm sorry you had to use it to the extent that you did, I know it's dangerous to do that way!

End result, I played my gig Saturday night, didn't miss ONE NOTE, and I do think it was the meds! smile Oh! I almost forgot! Our Joe Wrabek told me to take a few tablespoons of vinegar intermittently throughout the day (actually he put his in hot water with honey) and so I did, and that DID HELP A LOT! It makes your saliva glands go crazy which coats your throat. I just swallowed the vinegar without anything (used to doing shots of bourbon, lol) and it did work! That's actually the very first gig I ever did where I didn't miss one note all night. We do Zep, Rush, Heart, and everything else so for a vocalist it's a real chore. So, from now on, it's VINEGAR for me the day of a show! smile

BTW, our Joe said he had laryngitis when he did the vinegar trick and it worked for him!

Yeah, those are some of the things the steroids are to be used for. I got the impression from you first post that you got if from the doctor to stave off a cold.

It is nice to hit all the notes in a night, isn't?

Polly, congratulations! I'm so glad to hear you sang really well. That must be a great feeling.

I didn't know either rock and rye or the medicine, but I DO know about vinegar. You are not the only chick singer who swears by it. I have heard that apple cider vinegar is preferred for some reason, though.

Hey Jeff, how are you! Still picturing you there at the Bus Stop when you came a long way to hear us! Thanks again for that!

As for this topic: I need a sing-right strip. I breath fine through my diaphragm, (always). It's the singing I would help on!

Take good care!

Never sang a live gig, but if I had to I would use the strip, sick or not.

Why?

I hate the feeling of all eyes being on me and people tend to try to look away when they feel the urge to laugh at you. Great strategy for me at least. LOL
