Another question-- My folks had an older Chickering upright (made while they were still made well) that I played growing up, and I absolutely LOVED it. There's no way I'll ever get it from my family :-), you know how that goes. I'm not in the market for a piano at the moment, but when I replace mine, I'll be looking for a smaller grand (5-6') and I'll want a sound that reminds me of that Chickering. It was a dream to play, and I haven't had a piano I'm as satisfied with ever since. I won't have tons of $$ to spend, somewhere in the $5-20K range, when I go for it. I'm aware of the foreign-made mass-produced piano issues, and I'd like to avoid those if I can. Still, I'm aware in that price range that I won't have much to work with. Meanwhile I've been to piano stores window-shopping, and I'm not impressed with the Kawai or Yamaha sound. They feel too bright to me compared to the richness of the old Chickering. Baldwin sounded "okay" but not impressive. Better than what I own (an older Kohler & Campbell upright) but not what I'm hoping for. My favorite piano-shopping moment was when they took me through a door and let me play a Bosendorfer just for fun. Oh wow. Heaven! A bit out of my price range however. LOL So--techs out there--what brands of piano should I looking, to replace that lovely rich sound I knew once upon a time? I'm okay with a used instrument, providing I can find one that checks out w/a technician. Somehow I doubt I'll get lucky enough to find an 'original' Chickering grand. Linda, I sold pianos for many years and probably know them better than many techs or tuners. If you can find one, the "Estonia" piano is the finest piano for the money I've ever dealt with. (yes it's made in Estonia). They are hand made, with Renner actions. The 5'6" model sounds much more like 6' grand because of its engineering (very wide body). They would come out of their packing crates (after having been at sea for a while) in perfect tune. A new one should still go for less than $20,000. Chas

Somehow I doubt I'll get lucky enough to find an 'original' Chickering grand. Hey Linda, Don't know where you are on this search these days, but last summer before we ended up with a Yamaha G1 at a killer price, my wife was watching ebay & Craigslist pretty religiously. She actually found several original Chickering grands, one (7 ft) in WI not far from where we summer. The price was not bad either, considering the quality you're likely assured of getting.

I do have a Steinway I can play anytime I want now though - I have a key to our church and it lives there. I've got a few piano recordings done on it. http://soundcloud.com/lindaofficial/sets/chalk-melodies/Soooooo - that helps in the meantime! Linda
