NOW CLOSED 14.02.2011 Thanks to everyone who sent something in. It's now time to sit down, and do some digital vocal arranging. It will take a while, so please keep an eye out in a few days time. LAST CALL - if anyone would like to submit a track, the cutoff date for this project is Sunday 13th Feb. Thanks to everyone who has submitted so far ! Update ; 04/02/2011 - We're now up to 12 finished vocal tracks, plus out liers, ( and more to cme ) and it's all settling down nicely. Unison, mainly, with some harmonies starting to be introduced by the girls. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=704874&songID=10233376 It's not too late to join in the fun, and send in a vocal take. Update ; 30/01/2011 - Another couple of tracks added. And some more editing. Still on unison vocals, but that will determine the harmonics. The bridge is going to be fun.... See ? Anyone can join in, and have some fun. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=704874&songID=10214105Update ; 24/01/2011 - A preview of how we're going so far. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=704874&songID=10184354Hey All, Was discussing the song "I Write The Songs" on the songwriters' forum, and thought I might have a crack at the backing track. Well, that's coming along Ok, so I was wondering if anyone would like to sing it ? Well, not just anyone, but a whole bunch of anyones. I think it would make a great group exercise. Just record your vocals, provide a link, and we could mix em all in to make a virtual choir. Thinking like "We Are the World" kinda thing. The origional track is here.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMBycZq66ks....and the working backing track here... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=704874&songID=10108787 which is still being worked on. Any takers ? You can post a link here, to a mixed in version, or just a vocal track, if you'd like to put one foward. Don't worry if you're singing is not so good. There's always Autotune, and we can stick you up the back, if you're gonna warble like me. Lyrics.... I Write The Songs (c) Bruce Arthur Johnston I've been alive forever and I wrote the very first song I put the words and the melodies together I am music And I write the songs (chorus) I write the songs that make the whole world sing I write the songs of love and special things I write the songs that make the young girls cry I write the songs I write the songs My home lies deep within you And I've got my own place in your soul Now when I look out through your eyes I'm young again, even though I'm very old (chorus) Oh my music makes you dance And gives your spirit to take a chance And I wrote some rock 'n roll so you can move Music fills your heart Well that's a real fine place to start It's from me, it's for you It's from you, it's from me It's a world wide symphony (chorus) I am music, ( music ) and I write the songs cheers, niteshift

Hey Nite- Posted this response on your original thread as well. It really is a reminder of great composition, this take for granted song from an era of so many great songs makes today's stuff seem like cheap nickel candy. The dynamics, the chords, the variety in sections, feels and tempo changes two key changes Hooks galore! My goodness... Again I would trade a finger to have written it \:\) Well I was feeling very ill all day and all night, we took a ride and went to the store. I had to leave shortly feeling i may fall down at any minute. I was so weak and that makes my balance and swaying problem worse. So tonight at 3:00 am I was gonna just crash out watch an epic or a western and try to fall asleep. Take a break from practicing on the guitar. But instead I pushed myself to sing LOL I haven't sang in weeks and even then it was backgrounds one night. then before that ages. So I did this song... now I not only have more respect for the writing, arranging, playing and recording but Barry's voice as well. Geeez was this not as easy as it sounds.... I'm not to happy with what I did naturally, I'm such a perpetrator when singing and it's nearly tied with my piano playing for last place for things I'm any good at it... I'll let you hear it and see if you can use it, it's okay if it's a "no I can't actually" It does have a few good moments and as always it's from the heart. It's done but I'll probably send it tomorrow night. I did the whole song... Thanks for giving me something to do rather than lay here depressed..

Hey Sub, Great mate ! If a non vocalist can give it a shot, there's noexcuse not to put something foward. Hey Ann, harmonies would be great. 1st harmonic in the chorus would be way cool. ( as well as the melody line ) Any "oohs" just follow the fluglehorn, that's the way it seems to go in the origional anyways. 4 takers so far ( you're in Andy, right ? ) And even I, yes me, niteshift, who doesn't sing, will give a rendition also. ...so that makes 5. The download has been updated with a better mix, so please re-download if you already did so. Much easier on the ears. We're away and flying..... cheers, niteshift

Are you needing harmony vocals or singing the entire song? I am confused here..or do we sing the whole song and you cut us out in the main vocal, but in the one with the "right" sound and leave the rest as part of the back up chorus?
Kim:)
this brings back so many memories

Hey Kim, You just sing the full song ( as does everyone ) , then we edit the verses, one line per singer, but leave everyone in for the chorus. ( i.e. the choir ) Please don't be pissed if you don't get a solo line, there's only 8 slots, plus a possible 4 more in the bridge, so it all just depends "what works", in the mix. If you're up to doing a harmony line for the chorus, as a second take, that would be great. And if you know the "oohs", that's a third take. Make sense ? cheers, niteshift PS - you just gimmie what you got. I'm a whiz with the splice and dice.

Brilliant Mark !
Was thinking that Barry had a similar voice structure to yourself ( really, the natural harmonics are very similar ) so, that would be great.
Hey Stan, would love a take from you, but please don't spend money on a studio ( unless you can borrow one ) Straight into the mic, anf I'll do the editing.
cheers, niteshift

Hey Mike, Yeah, it's not that easy without a guide vocal huh ? Good to see the producer behind the glass. I'll kick your ass, as you do with the vocalists through your studio, to nail it ! Hey Scott, yeah, played the backing track to the wife in the early hours of the morning as she was leaving for her audio director gig. Comment was "oh, that's beautiful, you're not going to wreck it by trying to sing it, are you ? " Hah ! So, you can come join me n the boys tent, pitched on the lawn, when we both get thrown out ! Girls ! Where are the girls ? We need more. Please sign up, if nothing else, you'll have a great time doing this song. cheers, niteshift

Hi Geoff This song is not as easy as it seems, just went and had a go at singing along with the youtube video, Eek, it's a beautiful song you picked. I sing the chorus fine, but I'd have to work on the verses. I'd like to have a go, but I'd have to see if my producer was available to record my vocal on it. I will find out what he's up too, and get back to you. Tonight I thought I'd take a break off the news, heart wrenching stories. Geoff, when you see the stories of everyone out giving those who need it a hand, yep, I got the tears happening, what a beautiful country we live in. Hugs Michele

You definitely have one girl here who's in! I did try to sing along with the main melody and it's not in a very female friendly key, at least for us ladies with lower voices haha so I'm just going to do some BVs for the chorus and verses. Working on some today and I will send you something by the end of today.

But I hope someone challenges Geoff with some verse harmonies too...doesn't have to be a clone of the Manilow version.

Hey Ann,
Eeek ! Please don't email me WAV files, just a link to where I can find them. They will crash my inbox. A 256k mp3 is fine.
cheers, niteshift
PS - look foward to listening to the first female vocal line.

Hey Michele,
That'd be great mate ! Just record what you're happy with.
Yes, the floods certainly are heart breaking. My wife is exhausted, from doing the news audio, which is relentless at the moment. Gotta have coverage though, as everyone is watching the tele for the latest updates. They even used live footage from the Nine helicopter to guide rescuerers to their spots, so there's an upside to everything I guess.
Take care my friend, and I hope you're Ok with the expected flood in Victoria tomorrow.
cheers, niteshift

Hi Niteshift Did you forget, I'm living in the Hunter Valley now, which will only be a ten minute drive for me, to go to the CMC Rocks the Hunter, I am so excited about that, I've only ever been to one other concert my whole life, and that was Dolly Pardon & Kenny Rogers years ago now. This concert, Miranda Lambert, Jasmine Rae, Allan Jackson, and the rest, I can't wait, I hope I get to meet Miranda Lambert, I have already Met Jasmine Rae, and she has all my respect, she encourages me all the time. Some how I have to get right up the front, with my seat and lot's of sun block, because my back injuries wouldn't handle me standing up all day hey. I'm also going to do some cooking for the Stars, I reckon those from the US would love my home made Lamingtons with whipped cream hah. This girl will find a way to get them to the Stars. As to the floods, we used to live in Broomfield, just a five minute drive into Creswick, our kids went to the School at Creswick, and they copped it twice the flood waters by the articles, September last year, and now again. So far we haven't had any flooding around Branxton, everything is good here. I could imagine what it's like for your wife, with all the coverage that is being done. It really rips your heart out hey Nite, it makes you realize that your problems are significant, to what these people are all going through. The stories of them all pulling together, brought me to tears, and also those who witnessed loved ones being lost, gosh, heart breaking. May God give them strength. This last year was tough for me, I pulled out of a Rape investigation, into how the Detectives handled my case, and didn't follow through, the Detective told me that I'd have to go to Court before he could investigate, and before any charges could be laid, but I'm not strong enough, and I can't walk into something that I don't believe in anymore. Our Court rooms are not what they make out they are, I lost respect a long time ago for them. Just because they wear those labels, doesn't mean I should respect them, or trust them, I know for sure, I wouldn't make it mentally to walk into a court room again, they smashed me that hard I nearly didn't make it. I feel sorry for our Police, not all, but those who are doing the right thing, our Legal systems here in Australia, have lost the PLOT, they continue to spit the criminals out into our communities, time and time again, cause at the end of the day, they still get paid, and the more they walk back into their court rooms, the more money they make, yeah, I suppose they have to provide for their families. It's like a Solicitor said to my sister, when they ripped my children from me, in the beginning, (At the end of the day, it doesn't matter which way it goes, I still get paid.) It took me twelve months to get them back, then they turned around and ripped my children again off me, different judge, told all the lies they possibly could, and ripped my family to shreds all over again. One mistake I made, I lodged complaints to the Legal Commission in Sydney regarding those Lawyers, I never should of done that, because that made it worse, they continued to litigate over and over again, got to Police, etc. Their was one Judge that I have respect for, when I got my children back off them the first round, she said my case was the worst she'd seen in her history of being a Judge, in 1999,and she said that she commended me for getting through it all. But not all where like her, today I believe that Judges should be voted in, just like Parliament, then if they are doing the wrong thing by our communities, we can vote them out. So yep I've personally had my own challenges, too many, but hey, I'm hanging on to what's left, and this year, I'm going to make my dreams become a reality. Looking forward to having a go at singing this song, and being part of the JPF choir, fun. I hope Mikes get's it through to me. hugs Michele Hey Michele,

I was going to do the harmonies, but I have to work off a download of the song and they are faded enough into the background that they are hard for me to hear and to follow and I have to hear them through one earbud of my i-pod.
If someone had a way to boost that, it would be easier to do.

Hey Ann, Yep, I have your tracks. They made it through the email OK. Thought you were going to send a whole song at 40 meg, so all is well, and my inbox survived. Hey Mark, yeah, Ann sent oohs and aahs, but more would be appreciated for the full effect. We also need some folks who are willing to sing the chorus, in a higher register. Not an octave above, a 3rd or 5th harmony would be really good. At the moment we have a lot of blokes down the bottom end, so the testosterone is showing up well. Hey Nigel, Great ! The more the merrier. Just email an mp3 pref. 320k to audiofile@optusnet.com.au Dry vocal track please. Hey Tams, Mark may be able to help you, by doing some b/v's first, which you could use as a guide. Hey Doug, are you able to resend your raw vocal without the effects ? It's difficult to run through with the mix, when it has a different treatment to the other vocal lines. What a bit of fun! Gotta fly and do some more knob twiddling. cheers, niteshift

Hey Guys, Just a small peak preview. Some basic editing to get some raw vocal arrangement happening. No effects apart from some EQ and reverb. No double tracking, or harmonic overdubs. As you can here, there's plenty of room for more vocalists, so please join in if you wish. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=704874&songID=10153310Especially you girls ! cheers, niteshift
