Ted Williams, the man with the golden voice. He was a homeless person that got discover on the street because of his speaking voice. Now he is all over the news and is being offered all kinds of jobs in radio, TV, commercials, etc. A real to life fairytale. Sort of makes you feel good for the guy, and gives you encouragement that these things can and does happen, it might happen for some of us yet.LOL

It's what I always called the rubber band affect. The lower one is pulled down to the lowest bottom, the more chance there is for a complete release and opposite circumstance. When there's only one way to go, (bottom to top, OR even top to bottom), that ride can be a very fast one. It's the ones in the middle that mostly just hang around with opportunities being had to most in that group, who then compete with many. But when that happens for anyone at the top of bottom?,,,,Look out for that rubber band to release to hurl ya real quickly! Great for that nice man! Great of that guy who taped him and took action to get him heard. Great all around! But isn't Ted Williams already gone and frozen for later?

It could and should inspire folks. IF it lasts. Apparently Mr. Williams had a family, nine kids, a career in broadcasting and voice over work until he lost it all because of Drugs and alcohol. He now has another chance to make good on his talent and promises.
I sincerely hope he does. It is often a long and hard road back.
I wish you well Mr. Williams

Mr. Williams has been given a second (maybe third) chance. Let's hope he does inspire us this time instead of lapsing into old, detrimental habits. It's a vicious circle and I hope he makes it this time... and inspires us all with success and good will.

I agree with a lot of what has been said.....I wish the guy luck. He seemingly did get a chance first time around and blew it cause of "habits" lets hope he has recovered and does not lapse. I think this is more of a publicity stunt than just plain giving the guy work. His story was hyped and plastered everywhere possible ulterior motives there. Perhaps it would have been a better gesture to not mention his past etc and avoid any hype. Just quietly give the guy a job WOULD HAVE BEEN BEST.

Does Ted Williams inspire me? Heck yeah. Two time MVP, oldest batting champ in major league history, batting average over .400...what's not to inspire?

Not yet….……he was on Dr. Phil today with his family (and will be again tomorrow for those who are interested…)

It's a vicious circle and I hope he makes it this time... and inspires us all with success and good will. I'm with Dave, forget about the freak luck You Tube /reporter discovery, forget about talent, there's a slew of people who can talk with a good talking voice and work hard through broadcasting school who deserve just as much a chance. While I think what happened is a wonderful blessing and an American made miracle... You want to inspire me? Stay off drugs and alcohol and take care of your nine kids. Be responsible. There are countless former drug addicts, alcoholics, who aren't even given a chances to wash dishes for a living, never mind given houses, jobs with NBA teams, book deals and probably a CD. Do the right thing with this second chance and truly inspire somebody.

Oh...that Ted Williams. Yeah, he does inspire me. I'm thinking I might start drinking again.

At first the story was inspiring, and I had high hopes that the man would get out of this horrible downward spiral..
until..
this week he and his family were on Dr. Phil. The man claimed to have been off drugs/alcohol for 2 and a half years. Now his family admits it is not true, (airing today) he drinks all the time and he also just got into a physical fight fest with his 29 year old daughter, pulling her hair, slapping her face, and they were both taken in for questioning by the police...the day before, he was kissing her hands on Dr Phil, saying how much he loved and missed her.
I think the man has more problems than we realize. I would want ANYONE to get back on their feet, but this man has copped an attitude to me.
and this is more publicity than anything, in my opinion.
What about the cabinet maker, like my husband, that loses his job? Never drank or touched drugs, always took care of his family...would work the job of three men, would clean trash off the streets if that is what it would take to get us by..would he get attention if God forbid he stood on a street corner with a sign saying, out of work carpenter. Good God fearing man, will work for food...or would he be passed by, because he doesn't have THE VOICE. What about all the other VOICES on television that work for years to make it big, yet this man can come off the streets and make more than they will ever see.
Ted told his daughter on Dr Phil..."I will buy you a Louis Vuitton purse"....like he can come in now and throw money on the problem and expects he will make a fortune. He already had money and fame, yet blew it.(while we, the people, paid for his children, as they were on welfare and food stamps...and he left his wife who is nearly blind. He needs major help. We have all made our share of mistakes, and 2nd chances are a beautiful thing. I hope he gets it, but lets not give him any more than others on the street that are truely clean and needing help...just because he has this "golden voice"...what about the ones with GOLDEN HEARTS?
I have just seen another side to him in the last few days...not the past mind you but the present, as in hitting his daughter...and lying about being sober, to me, this has taken away the chance for big time stuff. I wouldn't hire him. Too risky.

A radio station discovers a former DJ, homeless, on booze and down on his luck. Light comes on in radio station manager's head. Cue the drum roll. Puts homeless man on air. Radio station hits the publicity jackpot. Story goes viral. Homeless man gets his 15 minutes of fame. Radio station gets million dollars worth of free publicity. Meanwhile, millions remain homeless and without health care all over the country.
Yeah, real inspiring.

I was homeless for a few months. It's not fun. But, thank God, I was not chronically homeless. Those who are, most often, have either mental problems or drug problems (both of which I have had, but again, thank God, they didn't debilitate me.)
Unfortunately, in the U.S., years ago, the government saw in their wisdom (sic) that some people were being wrongly held in mental institutions, so they made it very difficult for people to be monitored or institutionalized. It was the wrong solution to the problem...but it was the easy, feel good solution, so government jumped at it. Instead of going after the people who were abusing the assessment process (for example, so they, the abusers, could lock away their enemies) the government just raised the bar for authorities to protect the mentally ill from themselves as well as society from the mentally ill.
This unfortunate saga, so far, is indicative of many problems. We discovered Ted Williams had a problem, so we threw money at him.

Just another example of sleazy reality TV.
They have just provided hours of reality entertainment to folks without spending and money on the participants. Interesting how quick Dr. Phil was on this one. Coincidence?
If they would have done this as a sitcom it would have cost them millions for writers, actors, etc. They got it for free.

I am always happy to see an underdog get a chance. He was given an amazing opportunity, but it will be tough for him to succeed. Like most people with drug or alcohol problems, their problems often supersede the opportunities afforded.
I hope he does well.

Mike is right about the Mentally Ill have no where to go these days. Now they don't treat them until they commit a crime. Then they just put them in prison.
Of course no one wants the "Insane Asylums" to return. Or do we?
We still have hospitals for the mentally ill but I'm not sure how they determine "mentally ill"

We've replaced one problem for the other one. But it does make for cheap entertainment.

Does he inspire me? Not really. But his story did--I saw the video before anyone did anything about it, and I wished I knew someone in the area, because I wanted to help somehow. So I was very pleased to see opportunity come knocking at his door so soon, like angels in a Frank Capra film. It doesn't matter to me that those who helped were seeing opportunities for themselves as well. A good thing happened. That sickens some folks, but it brought me cheer.
I wish him the very best.

I wasn't referring to the man as such but to the fact that talent can be discovered anywhere anytime. As for Ted himself, I was happy that he was given a second chance, he messed up his first time around, hopefully he learned from it and will not mess up again.
I feel sorry for carpenters, plummers, electricians, etc. that have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, but through the greedy and sleezy business practice of many white collar bankers, etc. It's true that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

Hey Everett you are not going all lefty are you? Not exactly sure what you mean by that. I have always leaned toward forgivness and second chances. Jesus died for our sins to give us all a second chance at salvation, even though we mess up again and again, that second chance is still offered, even on your death bed.
