I recently had a free trial to mixcraft and really liked the program. Last few recordings I've been using Audacity and I must say it pales in comparison...however, it is free for more than 20 days or whatever. I was just curious as to what everyone was using, and the up side and down side. Thank you for your time.
I have music for all of my songs and they vary from rock to country to folk and everywhere in between. (except rap)

I had never heard of Mixcraft so googled it....on the face of it it looks OK. use it if you are happy with it and it produces the results you want. I use Cubase with dozens of plugins etc as do most people I know who record music. Might be a bit costly for you. It is all down to experience, preference, applications and how much you have to spend.

Thanks Big Jim. I've been googling all over the place and there are tons of freebies it seems. Kristal, Quartz and Podium always end up on the top of the pile in searches. I just don't care for the audacity editing and setup in general

What you should do is download and test Reaper for free for 30 days. After you have done that, you will realize that the $40 it now costs for a license is practically free and that you are getting the equivalent of a $500 program for $40.

I use Kristal and there is a very helpful forum for any questions. It serves me well. Although, I agree that Reaper is probably a good deal. For my simple stuff, Kristal is fine.

Thanks Big Jim. I've been googling all over the place and there are tons of freebies it seems. Kristal, Quartz and Podium always end up on the top of the pile in searches. I just don't care for the audacity editing and setup in general It is all down to personal taste....you have to get something that has the apps and facilities you need and works the way you want it to. All to often music software has a very steep learning curve and a lot are simply not user friendly. You want to spend time recording etc...not spend months figuring out how to use the darn software. Audacity is simple to use and IMO is a good starting point giving a good grounding before moving on to the more advanced systems. Most of the top end systems have a similar editing setup to Audacity. I would also suggest that if money is tight then Reaper is a good bet...it used to be free but now offers 30 day free trial then you pay if you like it....it does have most of the functions of top end systems but at a fraction of the price. Once you get set up.....with whatever system you prefer... give me a bell...I might be able to supply you with some free plugins etc....

Give nTrack Studio a shot. US $64.00. If you purchase Reaper better do it now. It's going up to US $60.00 for the discounted license when the next version, 4.0, is released, which is coming soon. A note about updates: The free updates are only through a particular version.
