"Hallelujah," Leonard Cohen, the chart I pulled up off the Web just sounds wrong.

This is so dumb. I should know this!

What are the two chords on "major lift?"

I'm playing in Ab. I, IV, V's I understand fine too smile

Ab______________________Db__________Eb
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth,
____Fm__________________??____??
the minor fall, and the major lift...

But I can't sleep and was working out my own piano thing for this earlier and so it's bugging me. The obvious ones I was trying-- as the chart was off --sounded all wrong and it's like DUH.....

Finding some fun variations per verse though, to just give the feel on certain words a nudge. Playing the "hallelujah" on the last line of each verse slightly different each time.
Looking at a 4 verse arrangement for open mike next month.
Thanks!!

Linda

Linda, during that pre chorus, channel, lift or whatever, don't forget to go for the C chord after the Eb and before the Fm when it hits "Hallelujah." Great song, good work, Magne!

You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash

It's only music.

I'm a big fan of the capo, meaning I can just play this as

C, Am, C, Am, F, G, C, G7

C, F, G, Am, F, G , E, Am

F, Am, F, C, G, C, G7

and play it natural if I play with my daughter (on piano), and capo on 5 when I accompany myself

Jeff Buckley, who some say does the definative cover, capos on 5 and does it "in G" in a nice fingerpicking pattern...which is actually the Ab key you want

G, Em, G, Em, C, D, G, D

G, C, D, Em, C, D, B, Em

C, Em, C, G, D, G, D

Now follow the pattern and you should be able to transpose to any key you need.

To do it "naturally" (without a capo, because I don't think they've invented this wonderful tool for a piano), your key of Ab takes each of these chords Buckley uses up half a step, bringing you to the chords described above, and where, for example the B turns into the C that Mike reminds you to go to.

You can also see how that C goes up a half step to Db and the D goes up a half step to the Eb as SongCabinet showed.

Here's my take on the verses...I actually like these 5 plus I have two optionals

Oh and I know It's "secret chord" but I like "sacred chord"

I've heard there was a sacred chord
David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

***

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

Thanks, John!

I'm not a guitarist (yet) but - good idea on the capo.

I can play any key on piano once I figure out the chord chart. smile
Of course if you'd like to toss me a guitar track I can sing to.... be my guest. LOL smile
