Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!

Hope you have a great day.

Does anybody use pitch correction. I am testing out Melodyne, which is amazingly powerful, but I was wondering just how much you use pitch correction?

It certainly turns out that just about every note I sing can be improved. I have tremendous vocal technique... smile To show how off my ears are, when I miss a note by 32 cents, which seems a common miss for me, it actually sounds good.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,
I did try Melodyne a couple of years back just to tweak up a couple of sagging notes. I got rid of it because although improving the pitch it also gave the voice a sort of Micky Mouse sound. I now just try harder to sing in tune.
I like your songs by the way. You must be a big hit with the kids.
Keep going,
Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Vic,

Thanks very much. The shows have been going very well with the kids. Starting to get into schools now, which is a LOT of fun. I am trying to clean up some bad notes as well, and have found the same thing with the mickey mouse tones. I'm trying to get several of the songs ready to send to TAXI, who has a listing for kids songs right now, but it may indeed be easier to just re-record the vocals.

Best wishes,

John

The latest version of melodyne is amazing! I've used it to fix notes inside chords and even when I've noticed a string had go slightly sharp half way through a solo. I've been able to just go in and fix it. I've never tried it on vocals but I imagin if done correctly it would give great results.

Anyway welcome to JFP Vic.

I record with Reaper. Reaper comes with a pitch correction plug in called ReaTune. It does not seem to do much in automatic mode but in manual mode, you can see notes on a graph as they pass by and if they are off pitch, you can draw a line where you want them and they go there. Works great for fixing a guitar note that was bent too far or a vocal note that missed a bit. You cannot detect that a note has been corrected (no Mickey Mouse effect), unless you try to move it several steps! It works great and is free with Reaper.

I use Cubase 5 which also has its own pitch correction and vocoder built in...it is a fantastic tool when used properly...no mickey mouse sounds...in fact I bet few if any could spot where it is used. Saves a lot of time having to redo vocals or even instruments. OK best thing is to be note perfect on every take...but nobody is 100% all the time.....
My big bug is those who overuse it and sound like Cher on speed.

I have V-Vocal (and don't use it too much), but melodyne essentials is on sale for $50 here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/celemony-melodyne-essential

Essential does not have all the fancy stuff like DNA and polyphonic editing, but it handles the simple pitch correction quite well from what I've read. I wonder if it works with Sonar 8.5.3 -- I'll guess I am going to find out.

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
