Some folks were interested in having a challenge of setting an accompaniment to Tammy's acappella sound track which was posted in the MP3 forum. Tammy has enabled the song to be downloaded from soundclick. Here it is:
Twinkling Lights and Pink Chapagne Download

The challenge is to create accompaniment tracks for the song by adding tracks to the vocal track that is up on soundclick. (If you are not a member already, you will have to join soundclick to download it. The listener account is free.)

It's up to you to decide the style of the accompaniment and what instruments to use. When you are finished, please post a reply with the link to your finished work.

BPM is 109.

A caveat from me: This is an exercise and Tammy is allowing you to use the tracks for that purpose. Please remember to respect the intellectual property of both Tammy as melody writer and her partner as lyric writer. Writing an accompaniment does not make participants a co-writer. Your part in this is that of an arranger. If the exercise results in some kind of demo arrangement, that will be between you and the song's creators.

Good luck and have fun!

I did an experiment and used Band in a Box chord wizard. Each verse and chorus came out with different chords so I used the one that came closest.

Not even close to Tom Bresher's guitar version.

I think the first 12-14 seconds turned out pretty good. I lost the sense of the rhythm after that. Anyway here is my 44 second rendition of:

Twinkling Lights

Kevin

EDIT: LOL, we had a neighborhood Margarita Monday last night -- I thought this sounded good. OK, I can't blame it on that, I had mostly ice tea. Oh well, you win some and lose some.

Tom: That is just an amazing arrangement. You should have made that downloadable, I might have just added to your wonderful stuff.

Rick: You took it another direction with the BIAB arranger. It sounded good to me. Did you allow BIAB to speed up and slow down or was it a constant tempo? That worked. BIAB is a pretty impressive tool.

NiteShift: Looking forward to your version.

Kevin

Hey Guys,

I thought it needed a bit of a jazzy treatment, so this is where I'm up to so far. Only through played, acoustic, drums and flute, but I wanted a good chord structure for it. I'm still thinking about the bridge, don't know which direction to go. Here's worktape No 1 .

Edit ; Now onto version 2 , further down the page.

All comments are welcome ( I don't want to put it on the mp3 board yet ) and if you happen to play fretless bass, and like the tune, please put your hand up. smile

cheers, niteshift

Hey Tom,

Yep they all going to come out real different I think. I did an update, now has a bit of bass, and a bridge.... well, a bridge of sorts. I got a bit lost, but hey, it's jazz right ? I've managed to stumble to the outro, so things aren't all bad. LOL

Hey Kevin,

Thanks mate, still looking for another instrument in there somewhere. Maybe light piano ? High ? Just tinkling away ?

Hey Tom, glad you haven't gone deaf. LOL. Bridge ? Yeah that is tough. I'm thinking, the lyrics say " She's gone", so I'm thinking somewhere exotic, to mirror the quirky nature of the soul. Maybe Africa, Asia, ( hence he "beat" ) then back to the jazzy NY feel.

I'm working on it....... LOL

cheers, niteshift

Just wanted to say that I am checking in here regularly, but didn't want to interfere with anyone's creativity, but if there is something you would like me to comment on or talk about, just ask!! Everyone is doing such a great job!!

Hey Tams,

Yep, it's all different, which is great. There's some great idaes being thrown up, which is the whole point.

Hopefully, by the end of the exercise, yourself and co-writer can collate them all, and then add/subtract what you need, and take it from there.

It's nice to work with someone who will put their work out there for open slather. Well done !

Niteshift wrote and recorded music for this and he sent me the tracks to add bass. Here is his answer to Tracy and Tammy's challenge:

Hey!

I'm pretty new to this and am not sure if you want me to wait until everyone is done to post on your recordings or not...I don't want to influence anyone's process...

I don't have lots of time in the summer, so I have not been on here regularly.

Thanks everyone, this is so exciting!

Tams sure does sing in key Jean. What a pleasure !

At the risk of mutual back patting...... Mr D ! Magic playing mate !

I would have never thought that a song could be constructed in reverse, from lyric, to lead melody, to chord and music structure, then bass. Well, I was wrong......

And that's all got to do with perfect timing ( here's thumbs up for usig click tracks ) and pefect pitch from the vocalist. Sure, it has it's small faults, but that's to be expected.

Tams, gotta say you're really got the pipes. If yourself and Tracy want to put it on the mp3, or anywhere else for critque, you may get some more ideas, and even another musician or two to noodle away at it. Thanks for letting us fool with it.

cheers, niteshift

Thank you all for the kind words!!

Just to clarify, Tracy wrote the lyrics, I just did the melody and sang it.

This was a work of pure "girl power" and I'm sure Glynda knows that is pretty powerful stuff!!

Ain't JPF a cool site? Someone with a great vocal and no musicians comes along and you get all this talent wanting to help to build a song. Including a Nashville producer. Can't beat that anywhere else.

That's what's great about trying out these challenges. The lyrics set the parameters for the melody, the melody for the accompaniment and arrangement. I have found working within parameters helpful in my own writing. It helps me to get it done more quickly and cohesively.
