Hey, Brother Johnnie...I plum Forgot that Pianists SOMETIMES split their Brains & do TWO different Parts, one with each Hand. That makes Guitars maybe Lots-EASIER to play, right??? (Sorry Mom, Johnnie Talked me Into Guitar..now Let Me Sleep!)
I'm always envious of Drummers, too...(I'm a Clockmaker..but not good at "Keepin'-Time"...) GOTTA Be Ambidextrous to be a Good Drummer...Hands AND Feet, too! (All you Organists Out There can now join-in...eh?)
I lived & ate in Europe 5 years, and YEP, they eat SO intelligently Over-There...(But ya sure get STARED AT over-here tryin' that Left-Handed-Forking, don't ya???) ;-)> As for scrathin', "All's Fair, Wherever!"
Here's a Fun One when the Kids Get Bored: Make a Reverse-Circle with your index-finger-pointed..with your Left Hand, THEN, circle-Forwards with your pointy-fingered RIGHT Hand. Same Time...Both Hands..in Opposite-Directions from each other. Sounds Easy..but should keep the kids "Occupied" for about 15-20 minutes while they Re-Wire their brains.
I've found I get equal results no matter WHICH hand I use for the Finger Gesture....(So you must basically be.."Right Handed"..heh-heh....or severely-Biased...) ;-)> (Just Kiddin'!)
So far, alla my Rubber-Gloved Docs have been Right-Handed. Enuf Said.
Thanks a Lot for convincing us you're Both-Handed, Amigo, which is Quite a Skill most Politicians are sorely-lacking. Hope your Head Melody's getting better-day-by-day, & ya get a Laugh outta us (mostly) mere One-Handed-Mortals all checkin'-in!
Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug, Stan

The left handed 10 yr old daugher is tryng to learn "Fireflies" on the piano at the moment. Can't isolate the L) and R) parts. The wife wants me to "teach" her. I can't teach her, it'll come when the seperation is there, and her brain is simultaniously able to control 2 limbs. The 12 r old son doesn't have a problem. He's R) handed, but a drummer, so can seperate all 5 limbs ( the 5th being the voice ). He's a fine dancer, and a damn good goal keeper ( soccer ) too, so all these things inter-relate. More melding of the arts and sciences I say.... it was good enough for Leonardo ! cheers, niteshift

HiDee 'Shift!
Oh..I forgot to add..point both index fingers AT each other. THEN try rotating in Opposite Directions. It's NOT easy...never seen anyone YET who does catch-on THAT Quickly. (& it feels really WEIRD, again..'cuz Brains aren't pre-wired to DO that motion.)
CAN see where Pianists & Drummers wouldn't have TOO tough a time..but "5 Seconds"...doubt it much!
AND..when I'm on a Housecall...with a lotta KIDS watchin' me fix the ol' GF Clock..potentially gettin'-bored..after they got THAT trick down-pat...I place my palms nearly-together...add a pen or pencil above each upright Thumb...then (Without REMOVING the Pen/Pencil) rotate the hands (Again, Opposite Directions, Vertically) & make the thing do a "180"...Cap where the Point used to be. Then..back-again. This usually results in a LOONG period of "They're Self-Entertained" & I get a lotta work done!
Guess next time I'll ask in-advance "Who's Left-Handed" just for fun, too! & yep, Music these days sure DOES meld Art + Science..tho I've NOT been "On Top of It" ever since Tape became passe. Recording's a whole new Ball Game/tooo many Computers since the '60's, JMO. (At least most of the really BIG keys seem to be on the LEFT Side of my keypad!)
OOO//guess I was Wrong...mine's got a Shorter "Shift" key on the Left...Rats..Lefties get "Short-Shifted"..Again!
Back to the Think Tank...Thanks for the Kind Re-Visit, Amigo! Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug, Stan

I would have played guitar left handed, because when I was younger and Mom made me vacuum the house, I use to hold the vacuum pipe left handed when I played air guitar instead of cleaning the house. But unfortunately, my two brothers already had right handed guitars, and I learned that way out of convenience.

G'Mornin' Brother Russ...Nice T-Rex ya got there! Kinda Jealous ya DID learn to play Guitar, & Congrats for it, Amigo!!!
I went Googlin' this AM...looked up "We only use 10% of our brains" & discovered that's an ole Myth..just like "Don't swim for an Hour after eating or you'll get cramps". You, too, are using your brain 100% of the time, over the day..OR you'd have never learned Guitar..either side! (The article did say maybe it's down to "10%..at rest..& thinking"...)
Interestingly, Our brains use "20% of our energy (to power) 3% of our body weight." (All 3 pounds of Gray Matter!)
And..when it comes to "Handedness"..our Minds sure seem to have a Mind of Their Own.
Many Thanks for Your Kind Visit & Words, Amigo! (I'm now wrackin' my brain tryna remember What WAS that Song where it goes "Everybody (Somethin'-or-Other) a DINOSAUR..") The day's off to a Great Start!
Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug, Stan

G'Mornin', Bro Ray!
Think those were Originally called "Barbershop Clocks"..ca 1890's, maybe a bit-earlier. (Dials were printed in-reverse, so when ya gazed at the Mirror, while gettin' a haircut, you could STILL tell the time.)
MOST European Clocks wind CLOCKWISE..(A concession to "Right-Handed" Winders..) There were NO Rules for US-Made Clocks..some wind Counter-Clockwise, Some Towards The Dial Center, Some Opposite to that.
There are just TWO German Grandfather Clock Movement Makers LEFT...and one, Hermle, has CLOCKWISE Winding...(the Tradition) and the Other, Kieninger, owned by Howard Miller, winds COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. (It's designer, a "Dr. Kieninger", musta been a Lefty, I'd bet!)
& That's How It Goes Here now...heh-heh!
Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug, Amigo! Stan

I am left-handed. Yeah!!! Last June 1st actually, had to have right shoulder surgery for torn rotator cuff and bone spur causing numbness and constant pain.... was scheduled to perform July 4th weekend.... wrote and played 3 left hand only compositions on my Midi. Google Jacqueline Bhuyan to see You tube videos (one only 3 min, 1 piece.. other 8 minutes, has 2 of the 3 pieces I did, though last few bars got cut off. See my website www.foreverrubato.com for the article I wrote about the experience to encourage others with loss of hand or arm. The crowd loved it..... I still play these for fun! So nice to be free of the immobilizer and playing again with both hands... both acoustic piano and Midi... I record my albums on a grand piano...so sonorous.

Just a quick question (I *know* y'all have answers). Left-handed folks are conventionally referred to as "southpaws." Does that make right-handed people "northpaws"? And if not, *why* not? (And if so,are there "eastpaws" and "westpaws"? And what are *they*?)

I am ambidextrous. I can do most things with either hand but out of habit have adopted using certain hands for certain tasks. I write with my left hand but when I strum a guitar would play it right handed. I play golf badly either way. I am considered to be good at bowling and playing darts which I play right handed but can play a reasonable game left handed. Guess I am just crazy mixed up. I suppose I am mainly left handed but when I was a kid at school the teacher used to hit me with a ruler if she saw me writing with my left hand. I had some practice with my right hand but more often than not I took the beating and still wrote with my left hand. Probably one of the reasons I am nuts.

I'm left handed. I used to arm wrestle right handed. I'm stronger in the right arm. My challengers knew that I was left handed, and I agreed to wrestle them right handed (they thought it was an easy win). They were surprised when I beat them.
I'm ready to arm wrestle Big Jim.

Like the ALL-STAR pitcher above I also was a starting right handed catcher in baseball all the way through college but wasn't good enough to make it. Hmm, kind of like music too. But actually I am aMbIdExTrOsE. I write with my right, play pool with my left and use both on the drums. I always did wonder though, since I catch a baseball in my lefthand, why do I always catch a tennis ball with my right down at the beach! Who knows!

Joe...
I can tell you why left-handers are referred to as "southpaws".
In the early part of last century, most baseball parks were built with the pitcher's mound directly eastward from the batter's box. Lefties' left hands (paws) were on the south side of their bodies...thus were referred to as "Southpaws".
Why were righties not rweferred to as "Northpaws"? They were the base model and maintained their original name..."Righthanders". The exceptions (lefties) were given a nickname..."Southpaws"
So, why no "Eastpaws or "Leftpaws"? No baseball parks/stadiums were ever built with the picher's mound - batter's box in the north-south position, thus niehter arm ever was located on the east or west sides of their body when they pitched in the game.
Hope that answers your question!!!
Take care...and yes, I am wearing underwear as I type!!!!!
