I've recently inherited a Fender Stratocaster that was missing it's backplate and became iffy about playing it. Then I saw a recording of Hindrix at Woodstock, where he flipped his Strat back to play with his teeth, revealing his lack of backplate too, in addition to two extra springs. I'd like to know if it was coincidence, or if he took his off on purpose (if so, why?), and if the two extra springs were for his tremolo bar (mine doesn't have one).

There are a few obsessive compulsive gear hounds who will tell you that the Strat sounds different with the back plate removed. I am not one of those and don't think it makes any difference. Many back plates go missing when someone is working on the springs for the tremolo. Think of it like the hood of your car. The car can be driven with the hood off but most people prefer to leave theirs on.
Some people add extra springs to the tremolo to stiffen it up or to disable it completely. Tremolos can cause the guitar to go out of tune if the guitar is not set up properly so one fix is to disable it.

Vintage bridge, on. With a floating Floyd, off, because my trem block knocks against it when doing pull-ups.
