I have a Yamaha Keyboard that has Midi out. I don't really play Key board but I do use it for a few things. I have recorded from it using the phone/Aux out but I don't care for the way it sounds. It sounds much better when I use the MIDI.
I don't have any problem getting it into the DAW. The track is there and I can play it back. But how do I get it saved into an audio file.
If I have a midi track and a guitar track and save or export it to WAV or MP3 the only thing there is the guitar track. What am I missing?
Tried it in two different recording softwares with the same result.
Cubase SX3 and Tracktion.

You can't SAVE a midi track to an audio track, Bill. You have to set up an empty audio track in your daw and then route the midi track to the audio track and then RECORD it as audio. That's the way to do it if you want the midi track to be an audio track.

There should be no problem to bounce the two tracks together, and be able to hear the sound from both, though. If that's the issue, make sure you have marked both track's to be bounced. Remember midi is just numbers, so it doesn't record any actual sound, therefore you also need an virtual instrument to create sound on your midi track, but that should be there if you can hear sound.

Im not a cubase/tracktion user, so I can't be more specific with that.

I use Reaper and have been learning to use MIDI. I record the MIDI as a separate track and use a plug in of a piano or organ, etc. as an effect (the same way reverb or delay would be used). I can hear the track along with my other tracks and it is saved or rendered or exported along with the other tracks to the finished song. I have not had the issue you describe.

I have tried just about everything and can't make it work.
The midi file is there and I can play it back but I have not been able to create a music file that can be play outside of the program. The book is like reading Greek and the online help is no better.
I'll keep working through the tutorials and sooner or later I'll figure it out.
I cannot figure out how to route the midi track to an audio track. I follow the book instruction to the letter and it creates the audio track but is has nothing in it.
Thanks for the help guys.

You wouldn't happen to see an icon labeled "Bounce" in you DAW, would you? In Logic Pro "Bounce" is used to mix your tracks down to audio files (PCM/WAV, Mp3, etc.) Never used Cubase, but I thought all DAW's were similar.

I know there are musicians on Motifactor http://www.motifator.com/ that use Cubase. You could ask questions on their forums there.

Bill, in Cubase, solo that MIDI track, then Export it and select WAV (or MP3 or WMA or whatever).

THEN, you can Import that exported audio track back into your Cubase project.

Hi Mark
Yeah, I've done that, several times tried different things nothing works.
It shows the exported file being there. It even shows how many MB the file is. But it doesn't have anything in it.
It creates an audio track in the daw but it's empty. when I import it it is blank. Nothing there.
I must be doing something wrong but darned if I can figure it out.
I paid several hundred $$ for this software and it's the hardest thing I've ever tried to use.
I've had it since 2004 and keep pulling it out and working with it. Guess I should stick with it maybe I'd finally figure it out.LOL.
But I get frustrated and go back to my Mackie software for recording. But it has limitations.

Bill it could be a number of things causing the prob. You have to solo the tracks you want to use for the mix down. One of the most common probs is that you have to set up a file prior to starting any new project and everything is automatically saved to that file. It does it every couple of mins automatically. That saves any accidental erasing or crashes etc losing all your work. You also have to select the appropriate devices and inputs and outputs so that you are actually sending things properly and to the correct places. I can imagine all sorts of probs for someone not knowing their way around that side of the program. My tip for a simple fix if you cannot figure out where you are going wrong with Cubase would be just export it as midi and use a midi to wav/mp3 converter program to change it to audio.
If you want send me the file as midi and I can change it to wav or Mp3 for you. I can also use any soundcard you want (different soundcards produce slightly diff sounds) EG. A Yamaha piano sound is diff from a Roland although they use the same midi file.

If Cubase is not working for you, you might try Reaper. It works very well and is not too, too complicated. You can download it for a free trial and buy it for $60 if you like it.

Hi Big Jim
Thanks for the offer. I'll figure it out sooner or later. smile
It is just really strange. The midi file exports and I can find the file. It shows up in the pool. It say it is 8 MB but there is nothing there when I import it into the track. It does the same thing with my other software too.
I think it may have to do with the ins and outs.

Hi Colin
They are all complicated but Cubase is like pro tools. You spend $500.00 on the software then spend $1000.00 paying someone to teach you how to use it.
I think I have a copy of LE around here somewhere. I will try that. It is a much simpler program.

I'll bet that you are using the built-in Microsoft synth that comes with Windows. This works a little differently to most soft synths in that it is external to Cubase and the audio goes straight to your soundcard rather than through Cubase. The only way to record this is to run a cable from your computer output back to the computer input. You will need to switch off all other tracks and just record the MIDI part.

Some audio interfaces also allow you to record what you are listening to directly but exactly how you do this depends on your particular interface.

Cheers

James.

Hi James
That might be the problem. It does show the Microsoft wavetable synth on the output in the navigator.
Mike Dunbar came by and did a quick test with it and darned if he didn't make it work with a couple mouse clicks.
After he left I tried it. Of course it didn't work. :(` Darned if I know how he did it. I was sitting right there watching him.
