Well, my newest hobby (as if I need another one) is creating tribute and family videos. It started when a friend of mine gave me a copy of Adobe Premier Elements, video editing software. I have to stop doing it for free though because it can take many evenings and weekends putting them together. My estimation is that a 10 minute video takes 20 - 30 hours of work. The last two projects I did were for friends. They each gave me a half dozen CDs with hours and hours of family video on them. My job was to make a 5 - 10 minute video montage set to music but going through all of the CDs to find the best clips is a job in itself. Now the only videos I create for free are either for the music comedy group I'm in, or for my grand daughter Tessa. One thing I DO need is a better quality video camera. As a note, the lady who gave me the video software passed away a few months back. I used the software to make a tribute video of her for her family. Below is a link to a video I made featuring my grand daughter's book sale, swap (and dance recital) which took place on our front lawn. We set up her book table at 2PM. It took me until 7PM to get her to give it up. She made 28 dollars and some change that day. A very happy little girl indeed!

HIYa Brother Duncan!

Been almost a Decade now, but I took a Video Camcorder to visit my dying Stepdad, & we shot a 1-hour tape of His Life Story. Came back a year later, when he had months to go, & showed it/recorded Another Hour of "Interview"...& made copies of both for my Bro, Sis, & "Dad's" Galfriend.

Meant a lot to him...and to us.

It COULD turn into a thriving sideline-biz for You....I'd sug getting together a Standard List of Questions..for you to Interview-with..whomever you're hired to tape. Ya then set up a Tripod & "Roll-Camera!"

Instant..& more-or-less Permanent..Momento. (&..properly-interviewed, you WON'T have to Edit-Much at all~)

Ponder it! Good Luck with the Other Things Ya Do...I sure enjoyed that Kid's Song & Video I watched this AM!

Best Wishes,
Stan

What a little cutie, Tessa is. Quite the dancer. $28! That's a good sum. Yes, a better video-camera would be the next step. It is a very competitive field and a lot of hard work. Good luck to you in your new endeavor.

Clearly,Tessa has a flair for promotion! She'll look back (and so will her kids and grandkids, one day) and love it, and remember what delight you had in doing this.

Duncan, you are absolutely right about time involvement with video. I have a small media company (in addition to my "day job" in a family business, not to mention music) and personal history projects are something I love doing. It's fascinating. I started doing it because I worked in media for years, then went to grad school for my MSW (Master of Social Work) and found that personal history blends the skills of both fields. And it's fun.

The Association of Personal Historians http://www.personalhistorians.org/
has some good information.

Yes, a good video camera is important. I use 2 Panasonics, both mini DV (digital tape). That format will probably (like everything else) become obsolete eventually, but the good part about tape is that you KEEP the raw footage. Upgrade equipment when you can. A good mic is priceless, especially when you can plug directly into the camera. Makes editing easy. If you go with 2 cameras (it took me a while to get there), get the same brand. Otherwise, you'll be correcting color between the 2 cameras!

A fast processor, and a few big external hard drives....I tell you, gear lust for video is almost as dangerous as gear lust for musical instruments!
