Helo,
I have been thinking about buying a electronic drum machine to help me with my songwriting. Considering the Alesis SR-18. Anybody have any pros or cons about this machine? Is this machine dificult to learn? Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks Steve

Steve, unbelievable. 3 months already and no feedback for ya. Holy mackarel!

Myself, I hate drum machines, they suck. A real live drummer should be hired instead of cutting us drummers out of the pie. They have a keyboard machine. Do they have a bass machine and a guitar machine and a singer machine? Hell, let's have the machines make all the music and screw the live bands. Let's have some person spin the machines, make the same money as a live band and act like a musically declined idiot for all the nostalgic sleeping heads out there. DJ's and machines is why there is no work for live bands. I hate DJ's. It's all disco's fault. That's what started all this crap!

Ssswheeehh! Man, that felt good. Sorry, I just felt that rant coming on and had to let it go. And remember, this is only a perspective from an old frustrated drummer! In no way is that rant intended for you Steve. No offense and I hope, non taken.

But, in answer to your question, drum machines can be very helpful with your songwriting. A drum machine will supply the much needed perfect groove to write and play to. Timing is the essence of a song to relay the true feel to your listeners, the ebbs and tides, the ups and downs that sends a person into wonderland.

Some of my friends use drum machines and I'm gonna ask them to chime in on this one for ya!

Have a good day and forget that rant. I already did. Lottsa laughs. Should I post this? Oh, what the hell. I got an old fall out shelter in the basement.

Steve,

Sorry it took this long, I thought it was an older thread...duh.

Anyway, I've used the SR 18 at a friends studio, it's not very user friendly. You can read some reviews here:
http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Keyboard+And+MIDI/product/Alesis/SR-18/10/1

I'm no expert on drum machines, I program my own beats using midi. However, it's been my experience with a lot of different products that both Boss and Zoom make user friendly gear. Now, their sounds might not be up to Alesis, but I'm guessing that for your needs they would be adequate.

The drum machine can be a great tool for songwriters and musicians. The journey, for me, went like this: at first I played out of time, then I worked with a metronome for years (BDM=Before Drum Machines), then I played stiffly when playing with live drummers...fought their time, then finally I learned how to play with either a click or a live human. Nowdays, I don't think that much about it. In the studio I work with a live drummer and if the producer wants I listen to the click with the drummer. Gary Paxton, a great producer, wants everyone to listen to the click. He feels that a good musician has his own unique sense of time, and if you get a group of musicians concentrating on the click as the focal point, you get each of their unique senses of time converging on the click. He's had hits like that.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Mike

You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash
