Penned this one following a visit to a Chicago neighborhood known for having many of these types of people in it.

OF SCAMPS AND SCALAWAGS

c2002 Brian Beecher

Bill was sitting at home one night
In his oasis of peace
Heís never been the kind for sitting still
Excitement really was his cup of tea

Around the ladies he would express
A carefree playfulness
He had a way of doing things
Which definitely did not make perfect sense

Heíd travel to the world of scamps and scalawags
Where there is a lesson to be learned
You run into those who cheat and lie and brag
When itís your turn
You know you will get burned

Practice a little tolerance
And you may learn something new
That was a lesson Bill learned
Way back in the hale days of his youth

Linda had a way about her
That made old Bill believe
Promising a romantic encounter
Blinded to what she had up her sleeve

How she looked was of secondary importance
She had the ability to charm
She made an excellent impression
So he would spend the night in her arms

Linda was nowhere to be found
When Bill woke up with the sun
He went to put his clothes on
And discovered all his money gone

He still goes to that street but
It can be harder than usual
To settle down to the routine
He no longer allows himself to be fooled

He finds it helpful to realize
Sad and wiser come what may
That night with Linda taught him
That sometimes people donít mean what they say

Welcome to the world of scamps and scalawags
Where there is a lesson to be learned
You run into those who cheat and lie and brag
When itís your turn
You know you will get burned

Hi Brian,

This is an interesting piece.
This feels like a real honest piece but because its being told like a narration I don't feel connection with the story line.

When I sat back I felt like I just heard Bills tale of Woe,
which I thought was an interesting thought because some years back and I guess today bluegrass and old country wrote stuff like this very, detailed and long. More like epic poem -ish....

I don't really have any other nits about it. Its a very interesting and entertaining lyrical piece.

Thanks for letting me take a look.

Checking in on this piece a decade and a half after its writing, the neighborhood which inspired the piece has now, like so many others near the nerve center of Chicago, become rather heavily gentrified, albeit not quite to the extent that some others have. It's located just a few miles north of Wrigley Field which may explain the reason. The scamps and scalawags are still there but seem to be fewer in number and far less visible than they were before. The couple of watering holes they used to hang out at have long since closed. You may think me a bit of an oddball but I enjoyed visiting the city more in the days when it had a bit more of an edge to it. Now most of the city is heavily comodified and rather sterile.

It seems disjointed. Get to the point quicker? You have a lot of lines that are interesting; if only this was written in a different manner to showcase them.
Best of luck!
Mike
