D E G A B Those notes are in the key of D and G. They play the blues scale in E (flat third and flat seven); they play the Southern Rock scale (flat seven) in A; and they are in B natural minor (flatted third, flatted six, and flatted seven). The Japanese name the pentatonic scale differently when starting on each note...like the western modes. Pelog, Hirojoshi, Kumoi, and uh, well I just hope I got those right. It's the natural scale for a vibrating column, the overtone series. It's what the trumpet plays. It's what the saucer people play in "Close Encounters." And it is the basis of most guitar riffs. Bobby McFerrin is a national treasure. Thanks, Birthday Boy. BTW, the Pentatonic scale can't be played in tune on the banjo. Of course, neither can any other scale Mike
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Thanks, Colin... and b-t-w... Happy Birthday.
Enjoyed McFerrin's simple but elegant demonstration. Neat!

Colin, Very cool, thanks for sharing! And I remember hearing Bobby's hit song "Don't Worry, Be Happy" back in the late 1980's, one of the most memorable times being during a hike around Yosemite park about around the Vernal Falls trail area. It was "eerie" hearing this from a radio from other hikers who were just a few feet ahead (or behind?) us on the trail, but I remember the simple message and groovey vibe of the song!

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself. -- Johann Sebastian Bach MichaelBorges.comLicenseQuote.com
