Calling All Bands: MidPoint Music Festival 2010
March marks early showcase registration period via SonicBids.com--Deadline is May 14
a
CINCINNATI, Ohio (March 1, 2010) -- Bands and artists interested in performing at Cincinnati's ninth annual MidPoint Music Festival can now submit a request for showcase consideration. MidPoint excels at exposing emerging artists to a devoted and passionate audience through festival promotion and exciting showcases embraced by a city rich in music history.

Bigger. Better. Stronger. Faster.
Music lovers who hopped around the 23 different stages for three nights last year had their pick of great bands to see and swoon over. Musicians enjoyed huge crowds in 2009, with new stages and a 45% increase in the number of performances over the previous year. More than 15,000 fans turned out to revel in 270 performances throughout Downtown and Over-the-Rhine. And band buzz reached a fever pitch with a new twist on Twitter and Cincinnati Bell text messaging, broadcasting within venues.

In 2010, to keep up with the growing demand from fans--as well as the rising quality of artist submissions, new venues continue to come on board. Stages will be added throughout the festival's easy-to-walk loop. More stages mean more opportunities for bands to get their music heard at one of the country's fastest growing festivals.

As the region's most celebrated independent music event, MidPoint continues to build strong relationships within the local business district and the general music industry, making Cincinnati a major destination for music tourism. Multiple venues will host showcases here from independent record labels based around the country. And Fountain Square is expanding the popular MidPoint Indie Summer concerts running Fridays June 4 through September 3.

For the second year in a row, the Garfield Suites Hotel will serve as MidPoint headquarters. Artists will receive special room packages and can participate in networking and social opportunities. Cincinnati's 2010 Digital Hub Initiative Non-Conference will provide MPMF artists access to a programming track introducing, discussing and pioneering new concepts in digital marketing and song placement. (digitalcincinnati.org)

Give us a holla and you will be heard
Using the Sonic Bids online submission system, prepare an electronic press kit (EPK), including band photos, biography, any press clippings, and three (3) original songs for consideration. The link for submissions can be found at MPMF.com. The early submission deadline is April 1, 2010. In order to be considered your submission must be received by the final deadline on May 14, 2010.

More information to be revealed
MPMF.com is the best resource for finding the latest festival news, photos, and listings. To interact with bands and fans check out Facebook.com/midpointmusicfestival and Myspace.com/mpmf. You can follow Executive Producer Dan McCabe's tweets at Twitter.com/MidPointMusic. Exciting news is also due to be announced at the MPMF 2010 Reveal Showcase on Thursday, March 25 at the Blue Wisp, 318 E. Eighth Street. Returning to Cincinnati for the performance will be MPMF veterans Hugo from New York City (myspace.com/hugo).

As far as I know, this is a legitimate event and a good opportunity for performing artists and bands. I don't think there is anything wrong with them giving out their info here as it could benefit a number of people here.

I don't have a problem with the event itself. I think most folks who choose to introduce themselves personally to our community before they promote something usually get a better response however. Perhaps the "Maven" will come back and be part of JPF directly rather than just posting generic ads here. And using his/her real name would also be helpful as well as answering any questions that might come up such as these:

How much does it cost?

Can you submit without using SonicBids?

How long are sets?

Are there guaranteed industry professionals attending all shows?

What is the average audience size (since most of those submitting won't have fan bases there yet (which is sort of the point right?

How will the extra venues/shows affect average attendance per show in a down economy year?

What % of band get accepted and do you mix genres or limit them? (i.e. will rap be paired with country for example?

How much are tickets for fans?

Who are the people choosing the bands?

That would be a good start. Please answer here directly and don't tell us to just visit the website. We ask all posters to place costs and pertinent info directly in their advertisement rather than forcing our members to leave our site for another. That's only fair rigtht?

We await your responses,

Thanks,

Brian

I played it in 2006. It's kind of a SXSW wannabe.
It's Sonicbids only. $15.
They used to have good industry panels, and seminars but no longer do.
The year I played Derek Sivers and Bootsy Collins were the keynote speakers. The turnout usually depends on the venue and time slot. It used to be in a concentrated area, but now it's scattered across venues throughout downtown Cincy and northern KY. There aren't and record industry people there to my knowledge, which is why I can't understand why so many bands come from all over the country {and the world} on their own dime to play for 40 minutes for free. The past couple of years they've put more emphasis on bands from elsewhere and less on the locals {which SUCKS IMO!} They get a TON of applications and accept MAYBE 20%. Most bands tend to be of the hipper- than- thou alternative variety, but they accept all genres. Usually they put bands of similar styles in common venues.

I myself will not be submitting this year {been there, done that}
They usually put the acoustic acts in one of the small coffeehouse venues, and I can play for more people any given night at a PAYING gig in the same town! I don't see the logic in spending $15 on a submission fee, then blowing off a paying gig to play it. I might as well flush $200 down the toilet. But that's MY situation. If you're an up and coming band looking create a buzz in another city, and network with other musicians from all over the world {they had bands come from as far away as Japan and Israel last year} by all means go for it. Just keep in mind if you're looking to be seen by some record company mogels, you'll be disappointed. Being accepted, and playing the event looks good on the band resume, since they are VERY selective. As far as ticket prices for fans, and all other pertinent info, go to their website at www.mpmf.com Hope that helps!

Glad to see a few people checking this out! I'll try to answer questions and correct some of what our good friend Bob stated.

Not trying to spam. I'm a singer/songwriter myself. I just wanted to post information here which I thought performers would be interested in. I wasn't sure if everyone browsed the different forums, so I posted in the cities I thought might be most convenient for someone to travel.

This isn't a sales pitch but an offer for you to see if it's for you. If it's not, that's fine. We're looking for talent. The festival is in it's ninth year, we pay our performers and offer a good atmosphere for fans and performers alike to enjoy themselves. That's really the bottom line of it all. No promises to strike it rich or cure cancer.

Like the release states, showcase requests are handled through Sonicbids. You can click on the links to see those details. It is what it is and I'll leave that to you to decide.

Unlike what Bob said, more than 50% of the acts are local (or at least regional). And of the 300 acts we hope to put on the bill this year more than 50% will come from Sonicbids. I'd say the majority come from within a 300-400 mile radius. But we have had acts come from China, Japan, Europe, South America, Australia, and Africa. (That's all because of Sonicbids!)

A small committee individually listens to every Sonicbids EPK.

We promote everyone alike. I think what Bob might be reading into is the fact that when MidPoint started it only showcased unsigned bands, which is no longer the M-O. But all the acts are in "emerging artist" category. We do bring in some independent labels that showcase some of their rosters, but it's not near the label takeover you see at other festivals. Trust me, MidPoint would have always booked some labeled bands in the past if they could afford it. We've gotten more sponsorship help to try to bring in 3 or 4 bigger acts every year, which is bolstering the status of the event, helping everyone involved. You'd rather promote that you're playing the same festival as Simon and Garfunkel than just the Unknown Acoustic Band.

Most sets at MidPoint are about 45 minutes.

Unlike what Bob said, MidPoint is not really spread out. There is one venue in Northern Kentucky...the Southgate House, which is one of the best music venues in the region. They have two stages, one being a 600 capacity ballroom drawing bigger acts. The other 20+ stages are in Downtown and uptown Over the Rhine, all in a loop which is completely walkable. You can't find a city with 20+ venues in the same block, but here you can literally walk less than five minutes between one venue to another. For those who don't want to walk from one end to the other, our sponsor, Scion, provides 20 vehicles that transport fans in a big loop for free. It's a great service I've not seen anywhere else and fans love it.

The crowd size varies depending on the size of the room and how popular the act is. Getting on a hot bill can really help too. We set up our website where fans can research bands/performers before. There is also a published guide with written descriptions for EVERY act, so one can plan what they want to see. But most people just browse.

Some stages are better suited for solo or duo acts and those rooms probably hold anywhere from 50-100 capacity. We have venues going up from there, capacity wise. Most are around 100-200. The biggest venue holds 1,000. New this year will be a 500 capacity, a 400 capacity, and a 300 capacity room. So we're getting bigger rooms, but holding on to the normal-sized ones.

The economy has been bad in Cincinnati for a few years actually. MidPoint has grown bigger each year. Truth is...it's a good value considering what most of these events charge. We've had more issues with the occasional rain storm than people not coming out due to ticket price. Bars and venues open and close every year, so our stages are never exactly the same. But we wouldn't be taking on the extra risk of getting more/bigger venues if we didn't think we couldn't attract music fans. We know the demand is there for it to grow based on dealing with the packed rooms previous years. Cincinnati is a music town and this event has legs.

Prices haven't been announced. Tickets for the 3-day event have been $29 for the past few years. We'll see if that changes or not. At most venues you can pay a $5 cover to get in for that night if you want to stay there. But obviously if you want to venue hop, getting the full access pass is the best deal.

It would be hard for me to guarantee that an industry person would be at every show. But there are always people from all facets of the industry attending MidPoint every year. There are more industry folks there than just those we invite. I've personally seen label scouts taking notes and asking kids who they liked or didn't. We've had label execs., publishers, producers, and people from National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Grammys) attend. Most of them aren't registered in any way. They are just checking out the acts like everyone else.

(Last year we did have MTV come out to shoot one performer's set on Fountain Square for a reality show. I don't know if that kind of stuff happens a lot, but we now have the contacts for it to maybe happen with someone again.)

Bottom line...industry contacts or no, several acts that play MidPoint are able to use it to help bolster their image and are raising their status, getting better gigs and more attention on their future releases. It is a status thing to be involved.

The festival did have a conference component in past years, but we've adapted based on response. Even last year, we did have multiple industry panels and education sessions. So I'm not sure what Bob is thinking there. Not a lot of people attend though, because they just come for their gig and split.

But the recording industry is not what it was 10 or even 5 years ago. It doesn't make sense to try to tell someone how to get on radio or how to get signed. Labels are mostly done. This year we are working to try to educate artists on things more in common with the new model, working within the Digital Hub Initiative's marketing conference. Digital distribution, self branding, self promotion, working with publicity agencies, working with licensing and marketing agencies. These things will all be covered and available to participating MPMF artists for free.

Whew... that was a lot... And hey Brian... just visit the website smile... There will be more there as we get closer!

Hmmm.... still no name attached? Seriously?

I was doing you a big favor, but your sarcasm at the end didn't help your cause much. We like dealing with real people, not shills or folks unwilling to place their name with their words. Hard to have accountability later right?

Good luck. I've heard more positive than negatives about the confrence over the years. It's too bad a real person from the event can't come to us out in the open like typical honest people do. Why leave the bad taste out there after typing all that?

Our main communication tool within JPF is not the message boards, but rather our newsletter, chapters and live events. But search engines seem to find our boards and we quite often notice Google leading folks here who search. Being upfront with the facts is even more important in those cases. I'd suggest posting all the info above with your weaker original announcement. People also prefer to deal with a real person, not an anonymous shill. But that's just my opinion, I could be right!

BTW, I didn't mean to come off as poo-pooing the festival. My first post came off as a bit negative, which was not my intent.
Just that as an aging singer songwriter who already plays 6 nights a week it's no longer a great fit for ME personally.
It's a great event, and brings in lots of revenue and exposure to Cincinnati. P.S, if I was wrong about the panels this year I stand corrected. The venues ARE more spread out than in the past, but I neglected to mention the Scion transportation. Once again if you're in an up and coming band looking for exposure, trying to create a buzz, or looking to network by all means go for it, you'll have a blast. P.P.S to clarify the SXSW "wannabe" comment. I didn't mean it in a deragatory way. Just that SXSW is the industry standard, and thats where Midpoint is aiming for.

It's all good, Bob. I know what you are saying. You are a valued member of our community and I don't take it the wrong way.

And you're right, for a nightly gigging musician like yourself we can't really offer you anything you don't already have.

Some acts, though, can really leverage their performances to springboard to bigger and better things. Several have. The music business is hard, so we're just about creating opportunities to promote Cincinnati as a destination for musicians and fans alike to find what they are looking for. If we were making money at this, I'm sure I'd do something crazy, like publish my name on a message board so folks could e-mail me all day long.

I guess there is a thin line between shilling and trying to be helpful without sacrificing privacy. No sarcasm here, just being upfront.

Maven,

Sorry but you're full of crap. I didn't ask you to post your email address, just your name. We've had plentry of famous people post here in their own names, and sometimes with their email addresses exposed without a single case of anyone bothering them. If you were Peter Frampton, and posted your name, why would you receive emails? No one would know your address. We don't know if you are the owner of the event or someone not even connected falsely posting info (which has happened many times in the past here). Without some valid proof/authentication you are speaking for them, I have to warn folks not to trust anything you say. We never trust anonymous posters.

I'm not going to interject myself, and divulge this guy's idenity, because it's not my place to do so, but I wish he would do so himself, cuz he's a GREAT guy and works tirelessly to promote the Cincinnati music scene. He's the brains behind Midpoint AND the Cincy entertainment awards... Brother, just reveal yourself, because folks here are understandably leery of spammers and scammers. If you've been around here for any period of time, you'd understand why...Just tell folks here who you are, and what you're about, and I promise you they'll be cool. This is a great place.

Bob,

I'll actually take your word for it that he's the big cheese, which I suspected already. I believe we've even spoken before and we've even promoted his event in our newsletter in the past, back when we had direct communication. I have no idea why he's choosing to turn things negative... what is there to gain by that?

People do the darndest things. = )

Caribou (Ontario, Canada); Via Tania (Chicago, IL); Gaby Moreno (Guatemalan now based in Los Angeles, CA); Milktooth (Nashville, TN); A Place To Bury Strangers (Brooklyn, NY); Gringo Star (Atlanta, GA); Richard Buckner (Brooklyn, NY); Plus/Minus (Brooklyn, NY); Sam Lamont (Morgantown, WV); Cults (New York, NY); Van Dyke Parks (Pasadena, CA); Clare and the Reasons (Brooklyn, NY)

Discover more bands, fans, ticket deals, and secret show surprises
MidPoint will announce the full festival in June. Fans wanting the inside loop should consider these options. Cincinnati Bell wireless customers will have first access to alerts on who's playing, deals, and knowing if there's a special handshake at any possible Downtown door. To sign into this system, text "MPMF' to 9434. Find like-minded fans at Facebook.com/midpointmusicfestival, as well as status updates, discussions, and more. Behind-the-scenes tweets are available via Twitter.com/MidPointMusic. And of course, MPMF.com, created by Topic Design.

Sales of discounted 3-day passes start June 4 at the first Indie Summer event. In addition to all access, 3-day-pass holders will have exclusive access to The Secret Show, organized with help from Secret Cincinnati. A mysterious, must-see performer is already confirmed. Can you figure out who and where?
