Tonight has been a very tough night, from having to tell the guys of "Too Little Time", that I won't be able to continue playing in the band for some time, until this increasing Tinnitus can be dealt with. Now, unlike before, just playing my upright piano for ten minutes brings on the extremely high-pitch piercing sounds, and louder than before. It also has a feel to it more than before, as if a metal wire is moving back and forth from the middle of my head to my left ear. It gets loud, then slightly louder and so on. Phaser-like

As much as I will miss playing my upright, (will still be able to play my keyboard at a very low volume I assume), I am torn to the bone to think that guys in the band can't play here as usual, or play out too soon. I didn't let Roon know yet, as his wife is in the hospital and has enough on his mind. He might be relived though, for he wouldn't have to leave Jean to rush over here then back. Or even when she is home, as she needs his good care he is giving her. But I'll find the right time to let him know we are taking time off for a while.

I sure hope to be able to get the guys back here at some point, and also to get back to tuning pianos more and being able to play my old upright. There's worse things OF COURSE, but this affects others. That is much worse than being a solo guy and not doing that anymore.

Dealing with the Tinnitus OK, so no concerns there. Just need to bring it down a few notches so it doesn't overtake everything I am trying to hear.

Bless those guys! ALL. I have been VERY fortunate to have had all of the members of Too Little Time since 2006 come here and help live all of our dreams, to play in an original band and have fun at any event, and especially here at my home.

I count on 2LT continuing in the near future. I want the guys to still come over here whenever they like, for them to play and write songs together, as I either stay downstairs, or just go far a walk, or listen from out back. I would LOVE that to happen for them, and for me.

John

Oh, John, I am sorry to hear about the Tinnitus. Can you put an earplug in that ear to stop the ringing or does it do it no matter what?

The plugs make it worse, since the sounds are coming from my brain's hearing center to my ears. (as if they got a signal to send an audible sound). It is thought that the sounds are from loss of those same frequencies, through either loud noise, or some type of nerve damage, and sometimes aging.

The plugs when used during playing dampen the music, but with outside noises dampened like that, the hearing center must then think it can raise the volume of the Tinnitus, for when I removes the plugs after playing, it is way louder than before playing. Same as if not wearing the pugs at all. A weird thing for sure. But so it is. I tried many ways and sound therapy. Namenda seems like a hopeful drug to try, since all the others readily out there are bogus.

Please keep the guys in mind more than me please,,,,thanks Jean. They must want to play this Friday, since i had to cancel last weeks also, and now, for however long it might need to be.

Sorry to "hear" your Tinnitus has gotten worse. I can sympathize. I have had it for years. To many loud noises doing construction work and shooting shotguns without ear protection did it for me.
Thankfully mine doesn't seem as bad as yours. Your symptoms seem to be worsening more rapidly than mine although I have noticed it seems a little louder than it was. It does get worse some days.
And ear plugs only seem to make it louder, LOL.

I hope you can find something to ease the ringing. Let us know if you do.

John, I hope you can find some comfort in the fact that they love you as much as you love them. 2LT epitomizes the "We're all in this together" Spirit.

May the time, indeed, be too little until you're all back and better than ever.

John,

I saw this post the other day and wasn't able to post my thoughts right then, but will now. To say it bluntly, this really, really, REALLY sucks. There are a lot of things that can slow us down in life, but when one strikes at the heart of what you love doing -- the core of "what makes you who you are" - well, it makes it hard to keep the faith. What Brian is going through right now is another example, and what I've seen other members deal with over the years.

Yet - you keep on keepin' on. This is a scary issue for anyone, especially a musician. As much as it hurts to make the decision you have, it sounds like it's a choice you must make for now. As for the future - put it in God's hands; that's really where it is all along anyway.

I've always admired your presence and encouragement here. I sorta "come and go" as time and schedule permits (not to mention two teenagers and my insistence on "internet use downstairs only" on one computer) but you are a ROCK in JPF!

Sorry to hear that, maybe it will tone down in the weeks to come and you can go back to do what you love doing!!

Bill, Bob, Brenda, and Kevin, thank you for your heartfelt words! And Bill,,,gun shots! Now that's loud! Almost like a Marnie snare drum hit! He's a big guy with feeling the needed punch in some of the songs.

I got the guys together last Friday and tried playing "real" low. The results for even until now made no difference than if we played as usual. (And that was without any guitar, as Roon could not make it).

The longer one has Tinnitus, the easier it can spike, it seems. When it spikes, it is just dominating, no matter my good attitude towards it. Makes hearing anything difficult, as it's like taking away half of my hearing, for the Tinnitus sounds are that loud, (dominating). I can't tune pianos as of today yet, and that is my only job. I need to hear most of the waves anyway! I don't want to guess and call it tuned, know what I mean?

Not having perfect pitch makes hearing the waves, (beats) necessary, (as piano tuners shouldn't, for reasons of many pianos not able to be tuned in pitch the first time or so if found really flat).

BUT,,,,,my issue are not nearly bad as compared to what Iggy and Roon, and bass2x's brother and Brian, and many others are going through. Mine is affecting a pleasure, and may affect the time for the band to play. But my conditions are not painful, just an annoyance. Not working of course is not good. But we are managing fine so far. Did some financial and energy things to help adjust.

The one clinical test on Namenda for Tinnitus did not show enough promise to have doctors write scripts for it. BUT, it was only a 90 day test, with 6 months really needed to properly monitor brain repair, which Namenda has shown to do for Alzheimer's patients. So, a longer clinical test should be done. I wrote to one of the leading universities, (where the professor there has been in good communication with me), for the research of Tinnitus, about such a short test not able to show possible brain healing in the hearing center. Glutamate is suspected of causing damage, which Namenda is shown to block after longer use in the Alzheimer's studies, and is used for that. Blocking AND brain repair results need 6 months to demonstrate, in other words. WHY did they only do a 90 day test???? I don't get it.

Sub said there is software, (Jamhub), that allows a band, (five inputs though), to practice without sounds other than controlled headphone sounds. No amps or real drums. Somebody in the room would only hear picking on electric guitars as if not pluged in, and the electronic drums needed to be played would only have that low sound of a stick hitting the rubber pads. Amazing!

we would need 8 inputs, to include vocals. (Unless the sounds can be low enough in our headphones, or to have just one ear covered, to then sing with no vocal inputs (mics) being used.
Then, five inputs would cover us five players!

Would have to get electronic drums and the program being a few hundred dollars. Maybe something to save for for the near future. Look into Jamhub for yourselves and see what you think for your own use if in a band and concerned about your ears and brain.

Thanks again for all your thoughts. I appreciate us all being a family here. Thanks for allowing to spill some beans.
If I can play once in a while, (not even played at Sub's the last two times there for what I was already hearing), then once in a while is better than nothing. We can practice at home,,(them, not me), and play a gig outside this spring and summer maybe. Got to try anyway. Got to tune though too. Will figure it all out.

Contact Musicares and ask for help finding an expert to help you out John... they just came through with massive support for a family friend and house band musician with brain cancer and I bet they could help you out since you make your living tuning instruments primarily... their area leader has posted here on the boards offering help.. and get their help with Caro as well!

Thanks Brian. I already have the latest info on Tinnitus through the ATA, and Penn U, as well as McMaster U in Canada. Europe studies as well, which shows promise in the drug Namenda. But longer term studies need to be made to show all factors, especially in someone like me, (middle age). It's primarily an Alzheimer's drug for Dementia. Ha! Yeah,,,,I might need that now anyway! I heard ya,,,,,I heard ya!

Thanks for your input. I have checked out their site, and will write for what they may know too.

Sub could use their help in getting to the right doctor for his symptoms, for he NEEDS a doc that will give him a day, and then think about it all that night, then start the tests and so on. Good avenue to try. Thanks again.

Thank you Orlando. Like so many here, your thoughts and prayers are appreciated. Please keep Brian, Iggy, Roon, Sub and Calvin, (among all others in mind more though). Thanks! I am more well off than any of their situations.

I just hope others reading these threads take advice for their own hearing concerns. Use ear plugs BEFORE sound damage,,,for later, they will only add to the problem! No kidding!

Hey John:

I read this awhile back. Sorry - I must have gotten distracted before I could reply. I disagree that music is just a pleasure for you though - I think it's pretty much essential!

I hope you can find a way to keep playing. You are tenacious and proactive, so if anyone can find a way to manage the problem, it is you!

No need to be sorry, Scott.

I have found a way to keep music going everyday and even compose,,,and it is something I don't have to strain at hearing or hear any higher Tinnitus form doing it: It's the thing all of us music types have in us anyway. The looping of songs, even new ones trying to be written. I hear beats, melodies, and all the music composing as it goes on and on, as if at the piano or guitar during a creative moment. And, I cant help it! As we all know, it's automatic! A built in composer and production process at work away form any instrument! How maby times have any us been driving, and a new beat or melody pops into our heads that we expand on. By the time we get to where we're going, it's a full song! (Some of the times of course).

So,,,after I realized this was going on, (with some lyrics as well), I just smiled and went "Huh" "Cool"! The thing that is not cool is to have the band affected by me not being able to play much at all now, (for I have to tune pianos in the near future to "work". Those waves, ya know? The machines that soe use to tune are not good for real pianos. If electronic pianos needed to be tuned, then there's a perfect world. Not the case with each piano. Unique in what false beats each string has, which affects the overall beats. Got to distinguish the difference to properly tune.

I look at my big upright in our little dinning room and I think it is more sad than me about not playing it. For I can still hear it in my new and old songs, day to day.

I do owe that attempt to Cindy, who is bearing that load now.

Thank you

John: Just saw this over at the FDP. You probably know all this already, but I thought I would pass it on:

Very cool of you to think of me and to make note of a site! Thank you! I will check that forum out and hopefully learn something. I see it is a Fender forum. I saw in a Sam Ash mailer, that Fender has new "Rumble" model Bass amps that claim, among other things: "louder"!

I cringed at reading that, for the unknowing young ones who will gladly turn it up even more than usual maybe, (like I did with similar keys amps), and later, have to deal with that choice.

Man! But, that's rock at the core of it, I guess. Will be many occupational hazards yet to come. Trade off for the great fun times everyone has when rockin a place. I just feel it's a shame for the ones that won't be able to stand it later. Or have to roll back on that they love to do.

Thanks again Kevin. I will check that forum out. You got my back, huh? Cool!
