For those who don't know, Brian A. Whitney our founder has had a stroke and our members have started a drive to help him with his medical bills. He didn't ask us to - we wanted to. Anyway, please click on the Support Just Plain Folks donate button which is in the right column. It's a paypal button and it is easy to do. Even if you can only afford $5, please consider donating it. Here is Brian's latest post.
Quote
Hi Folks,

Thanks so much for the support and concern. I just updated the Donations Honor Roll (which is the top post on all the boards Colin) to reflect the new donations. 6 generous folks have donated 165 dollars which will cover the co-pay for one emergency room visit (I've had several) and 2 doc appts. (I've had dozens). I think even with good insurance, we're into 5 figures, but the whole thing is well into 6 figures and growning (I have 3 hours of therapy per week at $85 dollar per 12 minutes). But it's been helping a lot and I am now walking without assistance (awkwardly and not very far, but it's getting better). I have much higher hurdles to overcome, but at least I can get myself around the house okay). I will tell the entire (amazing, harrowing, lucky and miraculous) story once I can type a bit fast than 5 words a minute. (This has taken an hour with breaks).

Thanks again. Please do NOT donate money if you don't have extra to share. We're getting by and many of you aren't doing as well. If Linda didn't have insurance, we would already have lost everything material in our lives.. but even if we did, we are still around and that's all that is really important. It was such a close call that all the rest is a bonus!

You guys are literally my extended family and I really appreciate the care and support!

Brian

Keep those donations coming in folks. Every little bit helps. If a hundred people donate just $5, that will take care of some of Brian's therapy co-payments. It will also help pay for JPF website operating costs.

Just saw the link in one of your post and it jus broke my heart to hear that even if I'm new here and don't know Brian I will donate as soon as I get checked with PayPal and I think this website is really great. I was just wondering how he was doing and what did the stroke do to him like is he able to walk and talk good? Is it bad or okay with full recovery expectation?

Hi, Jean-Sebastien!

Brian's left side was affected. Mentally he is OK and he is going through therapy. He said he can get around the house a little. He gets very tired and it's hard for him to type but he does it anyway. Although you are new, you can see that JPF has been around for quite a while. Brian always keeps it free for us, even though many of us have said that we should pay something. Well, this would be a good time for us to pay something if we can spare it. Even just a little bit helps, if enough people participate. grin Thanks for asking and considering donating.

Jean,
Thanks for keeping us posted about Brian's progress. Usually he bounces back pretty fast, but this time seems like it's taking a bit more rest and TLC to get back to normal. We should be sending some prayers his way, which hopefully has already been posted about, but I've been "snowed under" with a lot of projects lately, so I haven't kept up with the JPF community as much lately.

Anyway, here's to Brian to get a good balance of rest, food, excercise and work to get back to his best. I've noticed as we get a bit older, we can't always "push" ourselves as hard as we used to when we were a bit younger and more energetic.

BTW, I just realized that in a few days I'll have been a contributing JPF member here for 8 years... my how the time flys!

Michael

Wow, I just now read about Brian's stroke. Here I've been scrambling all over the net chasing my tail on other sites, and even attempting to Skype him. Hope you're OK. Only thing that's more excruciating than listening to one of my recordings is finding out that one of our leaders has been avalanched like this. Know that your site was highly recommended for beginners on one of my LinkedIn songwriter's groups. I feel so relieved every time I find a place that may help this 30 year closet lyricist crawl out and begin to share what I do. Keep me posted. Maybe we can take a collection for Mac Dictate so you won't have to type your posts. Or has your speech been affected too? God bless you and your family. 2011 has got to be a better year. At least you're walking farther away from the stroke with each new thing you relearn to do. -Pete

I have noticed that Brian's stroke occurred back in February 2010. Would I be correct in assuming that his medical bills have been paid, or does he still owe money? I would like to know if donations are still needed?

Thank God I live in England and we have the national health. I have recently received a liver transplant and am having to take really expensive drugs to suppress my immune system. I have to make regular visits to the hospital for blood tests and none of these services cost me a dime. I consider myself very fortunate.

I was fortunate in that I had health insurance but it was a bad couple years with and continual string of strokes and new problems left from the aftermath. We did get some donations which helped keep JPF going. The trouble was I was not out touring the US and the UK, Canada and Europe where we'd do free events, but get donation and sell hats and t-shirts to raise money so JPF would break even, which has been the goal. Further, even with insurance, my bills piled up all while I wasn't able to do sponsored events like the music awards and we had to skip the 2010/2011/2012 music awards. We're just now restarting a new round of them, which we do for free, but which usually allows us to add sponsors.

I had a very generous music industry successful person who paid a big chunk of my medical bills which made a huge difference.

We accept donation to pay for the basic costs of running the site and other activities we do. We have community sponsors who also help with costs. Our message board donation, which I use to pay the costs of the website it uses, have slowed down so if you enjoy the site and want to contribute, we welcome the support. I do not take nor make a dime from JPF and never have. I work as a volunteer as does everyone else involved. We run as few ads as possible and we turn down a lot of offers if we don't feel like we're a good fit with some companies. I am pretty open about my health situation as I am about everything in general. I have been slowly getting back on the horse so to speak and with the help of Kevin and Mike primarily we try to keep the boards free of spam and scammers and settle the regular squabbles that pop up as you can imagine. It is rare that there aren't several fires burning at any given time.

So no, I am not asking for support (I never did really, Jean was kind enough to post this) for health issues, but I always greatly appreciate support of the site and organization as a whole. The more resources we have, the more stuff we can do to help people in return.

Brian

Thanks, Barry! Bless you for offering this when you're going through so much right now...

But this initial post was from 2013...

Brian is alive and well in 2016:-)
