I'm trying to verify a point based on what I have learned from people here. I guess I'm looking to be proven right or wrong.
Two excellent but still amateur songwriters are under consideration for a cut. Both have songs that "fit"
One songwriter is a people person, willing to listen, adapt, accept criticism gracefully etc
The other has a reputation for not really being a people person...thin skinned, dismissive of others "who don't matter" etc.
Who gets the cut?
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

The first one, very nearly every time.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

If you don't have the first attitude. You don't even get close to the cut, regardless of how good the song is.
90% of songwriter's wounds are self inflicted. This is the biggest bullet in the gun.

I'm not an industry person, but I think this is the easiest question to answer that I've ever read. In ANY business, people will most likely want to help, assist, work with others that they want to see be successful, to join in on the piece of whatever pie. Example for in an insurance company position: My wife, Cindy, has all the great qualities of a good, caring and considerate person, (how she ended up with me is another story). But usually, she has great judgment, and level headed actions. She did NOT have a college degree for a position that opened up within this HUGE insurance company, and one was needed to qualify for the job. BUT, her boss wrote a letter to his boss, and after that boss investigated Cindy's work history, and doing some interviews of people she worked and works with, that boss wrote a letter to the head suit at the corporate office to try to get the policy lifted for Cindy. Many others in our state were qualified for that particular job already, (with degrees in hand). BUT, Cindy got the job! Why? Because she is Cindy! And all that comes with being her. (The first songwriter, silly!). Who would you want to hang with and work with? Smiles and Laughs and Liking Someone are powerful factors when it comes to who we want to help, or spend time with. Thanks for the responses so far. I too think it's the first, and for the reasons you cited JD. I'm a pretty seasoned business owner and I've learned that people do business with people they like, who are likeable, who can see other's points of view, who can adapt and collaborate and "innovate" their way together through whatever maze they are working through.
I have also seen that in action here, and have experienced it here myself. After "standing up" for someone here, I received an email from that someone who happened to be a publisher and who'd received flak "on board" for a proposed agreement with another person here.
This publisher made this exact point on the Board; life's too short to waste on those who are difficult to work with, and he also emailed me to say I could contact him anytime for info, help etc. I returned the email with thanks.
And thanks Mike and Marc, for chiming in, I'd hoped you both would...
And Colin and Stan, thank you too for injecting what most certainly happens out there as well.
I should explain I asked for verification because I made the point elsewhere and thought if it was asked\answered here by insiders it would add much needed credibility to what I said..
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop
