I'm Moving To Walmart
(c) 2009 Geneva keith
Verse 1 Is see beat-up mini hotorhomes, almost broken down, In the Walmart parking lot, day-in night-out, Folks wander in the cold by day, But when they need to sleep.. They just need a place to park that's free..
Chorus I'm movin' to Walmart, if I loose my house, It's one place I can park, I won't get kicked out.. The nightly lot sweeper, will let me sleep there, To park and not be booted out is rare.... Some folk got nowhere when it's cold and dark, If my home forecloses.. I'm moving to Walmart..
Verse 2 In these city limits, folks are told to move along, Homeless folk can't pay, fees at county parks, They're told it's illegal, To loiter in their cars.. But that's not done in the Walmart lot..
Bridge Beat-up cars that barely get around.. Are parted in that lot.. not being impounded, Blankets and belonging piled high in every seat.. It's someones only dry place to sleep....

Thanks Baily,
I was being a little silly on this but it's a reality that my son pointed out to me. Alot of people are sleeping in old cars and motorhomes at our local Walmart stores.
Then I was discussing it with others and found out that homeless people that try and sleep anywhere in the city limits get the police called and are told to move on. They have nowhere to go.
It's a really sad situation, and a very few organizations will open their door when it gets down to 28 degrees.
Thereare very few resources in this area for the homeless, and many people are a paycheck away and more and more are loosing jobs. A real sad situation!

Hi Geneva: I think this is a fantastic song idea and a dark situation that needs a light shone on it. I will be watching this to see where you go with it. The 5 line 6 line AB throws me a bit because I am such a simple 4 line 4 line AAB hard rhyme kinda guy, in fact I am just learning about where and how to use a bridge and as of yet have not put one into a song. Anyway that's my 2 cents. I love this whole idea Geneva.

Pretty cool lyric, Geneva. You know, I just saw today (Sunday) that WalMart is laying off 11,000 warehouse workers -- and the captains of ship USS Wayward say things are getting better. Anyways, this is a very real possibility these days and I like how you took the bull by the horns. Maybe you could do a little more 'picturing' as opposed to 'telling'. Hope that helps. -Dave

In reality this would really send a message if it did happen, and it probably would be at least somewhat reminiscent of the Bonus Army of the Depression era. We are told that we have avoided Great Depression II, but still feel we could be headed there. When you hear of layoffs at a behemoth such as Wal-Mart, then you know it's bad. Does put a damper on those of us who hoped for better with the dawn of the new year and decade.
Peace, Brian

Dave,
Now that's scarry!
When discount stores that sell things everyone buys and a couple in this area also have grocery departments, things are getting bad!

Brian,
You're right!
I feel like top priority needs to be creating jobs or we're headed for trouble BIG TIME!

Hi Swiss-Missy!
Cute Song..THO...I'm afraid IF it WAS a Hit, Wal-Mart'd be FORCED to send the NEW Overflow-Crowd off into the night...(Insurance Reasons..they'll tellya..same as Everywhere Else!)
City of San Diego designated several streets as "Safe Areas" for Homeless-with-cars Folks to park overnight, unmolsted/un-sent-away by Police. (Which inspired "Livin' On Un-Easy Street" ya can hear on Joe Wrabek's Site, I'll add!)
I think your last comment, above, is Spot ON...
Think I'll gin one up all about that right NOW!~
Good Luck with This One...tho...may end up doin' more Harm than Good, IF it really zooms to the top!
Best Wishes, & Major League Hugs, Stan

Here in Chicagoland, most suburbans areas have bans on overnight street parking. Is that a trend in other areas as well, or unique to this area? I once theorized that one of the reasons for it came about during the racial turbulence of the 1960's and was enacted as a means to keep "them" out. I really believe this reasoning is at very least obsolete, because most suburban areas are not as completely lily-white as they used to be.
As far back as the late 1980's homelessness had already become a huge problem, and at that time I wrote a piece to the local newspaper in my area saying that the nature of the job and housing markets was creating the problem. As a result of the current situation, which I find to be very disquieting, do you think that rooming houses will come back into vogue as a low-cost alternative plan?
And I do feel that one of the reasons there is now so much anti-this and that sentiment is that it may be difficult to understand just what is being communicated?

I found out, here on the outskirts on the west side of Eugene there is a couple blocks for overnight parkers during a few winter months.
I haven't yet learned if there's anything in the making to help these people.
I was just thinking, and it seems that motorhomes atleast, can sleep in rest areas like truckers do. I'm curious if some that. I suppose that OSP would move them on though if the were seen there with enough cocsistancy to be noticed.

Am very curious as to where we stand on this whole situation you wrote about now seven years later. One of the hidden consequences often for those who are down and out is that slick salespeople may come along and offer some sort of "get rich quick" scheme, encouraging them that today could feel like the first day of the rest of your life. More often than not, though, that first day could turn into the worst day of the rest of your life. Mainstream folks are not exempt either, especially when they are conned into thinking that they've broken through their own barrier faster than ever thought possible. Peace.

I was homeless a long time ago and had a bug infested OLD Car with holes in the roof. That's where I lived for two weeks and was constantly harassed by the Police to MOVE ALONG. Move along WHERE? GEEZE....
I wrote a song about how fast somebody can go from a good job and good family to living under a bridge. Check it out at Barry Butler on youtube called LIVIN UNDER A BRIDGE....
