I stopped in at a friends open mic last night at a local gin mill. So I played a couple tunes. When I got up near the mic, I got a terrible whiff of pure unadulterated evil. That mic smelled like it was going to melt under the duress of hundreds of thousands of bits of spittle stored in a vultures crotch.
I had to keep my distance, the closest I could get was a foot away. The very next performer was a tall, thin, heavy on the strummin dude who, literally, was rubbing that mic all over his face. I could see his nose being moved around by that fetid chunk of metal... Sorry, I have to brush my teeth, and gargle and floss again...

Yugh.....disgusting......A very good reason why I have my own mic that nobody else gets to use and why I clean all my mics on a regular basis....not only does it get rid of all the bugs etc but it improves sound quality....sound travels better without the dust and debris.

The host of one of the local jams here switches his personal mic in and out when he gets up to sing. I also found out that one of the other jammers has hepatitis C which makes you think (although hepatitis requires a blood exchange to be contagious).

I usually have my singing mike with me. I can tell people, "No offense, but unless your mike is better'n mine, I'd rather use mine." Mine may be pretty cheap, but I almost always consider it better. Thanks for reminding me why.

Personally, I have a couple of beta 58's that I don't let the general public use. When I run an open mic or do a gig with other performers I put them on regular 58's.
I started getting picky years ago when after a gig we were breaking down. The first thing to get put away were the mics. The other singer took off his foam windscreen and it plopped on the stage and splattered.
It ain't just the rabies, scabies and the flu that we're avoiding nowadays

Yuck. I am totally creeped out. I use our church mics all the time and they don't look like that. On the other hand, I don't usually squeeze the wind guards either. Maybe I should. Yuck.

I use those bleach wipes they make now. I like to wipe the mic screens down and let them dry before putting them away.

I went back to that open mic this week, they had new mics. I wonder if she saw this post...
The dude that was rubbing his face all over the mic wasn't there. Prolly home with the flu...

This made me giggle! I never encountered a foul smelling mic. Interesting! But it did make me think! I'm going to buy a mic with my tax refund money. Can you believe...all these years and I never had my own mic? Then again, didn't go to a lot of open mics, been in bands and used the same mic from the first time with the band (whatever was provided to me). Now I can really justify the expense of a mic! I'm being told to get an Audix as it will automatically condense my usually loud voice and make me sound good to the public. Sang through Shure SM 58s all these years.

Being that I have issues with germs I had this thought as I watched American Idol tonight(about sharing mics)as the singer sang with the mic rolling on his lips. Yes, and then he kissed his infant daughter. If an office phone can smell like Rick described the mic, I am not surprised that he had that awful experience. WOW! Travel with your own mic!

I saw that!! The dudes lower lip never left the mic. We run an open mic for a friend when his regular guy can't show up. We had another kid tonight kissing the dang mic. Glad they ain't mine the mics or the kid.

Rick, I've always had horrible mic technique and pissed off a lot of soundmen. I've heard that an Audix mic would solve that problem.
