A DOLLAR AND A DIME (C)1993 Steven Louis Faulkner
This story that I tell you Is a tale of growing old It’s all about a man I knew That I was proud to know Oh I was proud to know
He always had a dollar And he always had a dime He always had a smile And he always had a line He always had a line
For four years in the fortys A prisoner of war They could’nt beat the love out And he walked right out the door Yea he walked right out the door
The ladies they did love him He’d dance till closing time Then he’d buy another round They’re havin a good time They’re havin a good time
Then one day he did say As he held my hand I have had a good life I hope you’ll understand I hope you’ll understand
There’s a time for die’n There’s a time for letting go I have a love that I must meet Because I miss her so Because I miss her so
That very day he passed away I’d seen him the last time We sent him up to meet her With a dollar and a dime With a dollar and a dime
Everybody gathered As we lay him in his grave He lives on in memory And the love he always gave Yes the love he always gave
Everyone told stories Of the good times that they had All the times that they were good All the times that they were bad All the times that they all had
He’ll always have a dollar And he’ll always have a dime We don’t have to worry now He’s have’n a good time Yea he’s have’n a good time
So if you heed my story You’ll always have a line Always have a dollar And always have a dime A dollar and a dime
This concludes my story And I always have a line Tucked inside my wallet Is a dollar and a dime A dollar and a dime

Hi Steven,
Just popped by to have a read.
I really like this lyrics very much.
The only little bit I wasn’t sure about was the first verse with Knew, know, know. At the ends.
This story that I tell you Is a tale of growing old It’s all about a man I knew That I was proud to know Oh I was proud to know
Just a thought. An alternative form of know in the past tense is ‘Knowed’
This story that I tell you Is a tale of growing old It’s all about a man I knew That I was proud to have knowed Oh I was proud to have knowed
Maybe its just me.
Anyway I think if this is played right with the right voice will be very very Good.
Bye for now and God Bless
Roy

Daniel, I am touched by your comments, you really understand this song. It is about my Uncle Bud who had a line that he was all right as long as he had a dollar for a beer and a dime to make a phone call to get a ride home if he needed it. He was a mentor to me. He was a prisoner in a Japanese prisoner of war camp for four years where he was beaten and starved and came out at the end of the war at 62 pounds, very few of his mates survived. He always was smileing and enjoying life even though he was in pain alot due to back injuries inflicted by those beatings. I think because he touched death he valued life. Thanks again Daniel your comments are greatly appreciated and I feel lucky that you picked this song to look at first. I will record it and post it soon. I wish you the best in the upcomeing new year. Steven Faulkner

I have carried a dollar and a dime in my wallet for probably 30 years now, just in case. I think it was not only a good line but a valuable lesson. Thanks for taking the time to read this Brandon.

I dig the song!
The lines with tense: know--knew--known
Sometimes in folk songs it don't matter none, not ever, No.

Thanks Mackie I have to agree with that, it flows in the song and I think gets the point across. I appreciate your comments and time.

hey steven , im new to this and this is the first time ive gave opinion on anyone else's lyrics =) but anyway i really like the song , i know i can rellate to exactly what the story is about , but. i noticed that roy said "Just a thought. An alternative form of know in the past tense is ‘Knowed’
This story that I tell you Is a tale of growing old It’s all about a man I knew That I was proud to have knowed Oh I was proud to have knowed"
and btw the past tense to know is known =P anyway i think it should be changed to
This story that I tell you Is a tale of growing old It’s all about a man I knew That I was proud to have known Oh for the times that i was shown
just an idea seing as its about remember the good times =)

Hello Andy I appreciate your input here, I tried the past tense thing but it just does not flow with the melody of this song I did however look at your suggest of for the times that I was shown and although that does flow it does not say what I want to say there but will consider it elsewhere, that is a great suggestion and I value and appreciate all the suggestions that you have put forth. I have looked at your song ( I really liked what I saw) and will comment as soon as I can however I do not have the internet at home so that restricts my online presence as I do this from the Library, which is a great place to hang out. Thanks
Steven

Howdy Bronco, Gus here. An old muleskinner like me knows the import of heroes in ones life, that help point us in the best direction. If only the youth of today could see this, but the world is changing so fast, they see them as old hat or?????? look forward to musication......I'll be back.....Gus

I could not agree more, when I wrote this song I could not get through it without breaking down for about 6 months. I knew it hit the mark when my wife at the time read it and ran to the bathroom crying, that is how I judge my writing, did I paint the picture, did I tell the story, can it not only tell the story but can that story be felt. Old heros interest me I love their storys. Yes I was proud to know.
