recently started writing lyrics as a hoby and souly out of not knowing how to say things in my own words, so i tried writing them down and ended up with lyrics, my friends and familly are supportive and say that im good, but to be honest i don't really know if they are just being nice or telling me the truth, and let's face it im not gonna improve by people just being nice. So i've been looking for a place where i could post lyrics so i could get opinions without people stealing ideas or whatever (not that i think im THAT good) so can anyone tell me how this site works and if i can post lyrics on it ?
much appreciated ...Andy S =)

Andy,
Welcome to the mad house. Since I don't post much here myself in the way of music, I am more of the Nashville perspective guy, so others might have to fill you in on that process, but I believe if you scroll down the forum topics toward the bottom, there is a "Lyric feedback" area. might try there.
Good luck,
MAB

Andy S: Welcome to the JPF, this is a good site to post lyrics and get honest feedback -- but many here also make that new writers are "handled with care" so they don't get discouraged. There are three lyric forums called Lyric Feedback Forum and then Forum 2 and Forum 3.
My advice would be to post one in a lyric forum and then try and critique a few others. You learn a lot about writing by trying to critique. If you don't feel comfortable pointing out things you don't like, then just find at least one thing you do like.
Don't post too many at one time, or else you will run the risk of being ignored (ha, ha).
Again, welcome and post away. One side note: Ideas are NOT copyrightable and all ideas have probably been taken already. What will make you a great writer is to write about those same worn out ideas -- but present it with a fresh outlook or twist. Good luck.
Kevin

Welcome Andy - yes, post in the lyric section for feedback on your work. In fact, a good way to start would be to read the lyrics of others and leave comments. I also recommend reading Jason Blume's "6 Steps to Songwriting Success" and John Braheny's "The Craft and the Business of Songwriting" and also Robin Fredricks "Shortcuts to Hit Songwriting" as primers on the business itself, and the craft as well.

Welcome to JPF, Andy:
You are beginning a journey that can lead to "the pot of gold" or the deepest lonesome valley life has to offer. The little man who often perches on my left shoulder is telling me to advise you to run away now... before it is too late... LOL! On the other hand, the guy on my right shoulder just kicked the little man on my left shoulder where it hurts!
I hope you'll post often, join in on some of our discussions and soak up the tales of musical adventures we often spin. My best to you for success and happiness.
