So you wanna be a rock and roll star? Okay! Here's the deal: I wrote this song a long time ago, and used to play it in my band. Recently I thought I'd bring it back to life...but I found the old words just don't grab me anymore. But I DO still like the music! So I thought, hey, why not give it to the people for a fun challenge? So here it is...I'm going to let YOU have fun with it. If you're up to the challenge, your mission is to come up with the vocals and record them. It's rock and roll karaoke, baby! This means you need to come up with lyrics and a melody, and then sing it! When you're done, post it up here on this thread for us all to listen to what you came up with. Some other day I'll post what the song USED to be, but I wanna hear what YOU come up with. This is strictly for fun, so let's not worry about copyrights, legalities, blah blah blah...life is too short. I won't be stealing your ideas, pinky promise. It begins and ends here, but it's something you can keep forever and maybe even show to your grandkids someday. If you want, you can send me an MP3 of your vocals and I'll mix it together for you, but it's pretty easy to mix yourself if you have recording software. Either way is fine with me. Here's the song: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8347244And here is a breakdown of the structure: 0:00 Intro (D C G, D C F) 0:15 Verse 1 (G C G, FCG) 0:27 Verse 2 (G C G) 0:38 PreChorus (F D Bb Am) 0:45 Chorus (G C G C Em A D C) 0:56 Chorus (repeat) (G C G C Em A D C) 1:08 Instrumental (same as the intro) (D C G, D C F) 1:20 Verse 3 (G C G) 1:31 Mini-Bridge! Just a one-line change-up to stave off boredom! (Bb F C D) 1:37 Verse 4 (G C G) 1:49 PreChorus (F D Bb Am) 1:55 Chorus (G C G C Em A D C) 2:07 Chorus (repeat) (G C G C Em A D C) 2:18 Outro (G C G C Em A7 D7 C7 G) And there it is, short and sweet, in and out in less than 3 minutes. Have fun with it! Name it whatever you like, add anything else you want...some harmony, another instrument, whatever. Sky's the limit! Have fun, and...Let's RAWK and ROLL, PEE-POLE!!!

Joe Then what does it matter? It's in G. I'll put the chords on that chart above in a bit... OK, done!

Mark, it matters because even if I can't hear it, *you* can. Me, if I know what key it's in, I can usually follow the bass line. And you said the melody didn't matter. (We'll see about that.) Thanks for your help.

No problem, Joe. Seriously though, some rockers just talk their way through sometimes, like Lou Reed. Or there's always rapping!

I love a challenge, and have never been one to pass them up unless they're out of my reach.
I'm still procrastinating on my michrophone, then need to learn how to put the words with music. (I don't know what a good mic for this is).
I wrote a lyric for this for female vox. (Actually wrote for my voice range, though I only sing with a few locals I know and not in public). I'm not that brave yet.
This is just a real simple lyric, but I thought if any female vox wants to put this to Marks music, I'd contribute it. It's nothing special, just a little rock and roll with a little bit country. your's for the taking:
Nothing But Bad News
Verse 1 I ain't puttin' up with no more lies, You mess around on me out with the guys.
Verse2 You tell me I'm the only one for you, Mama didn't raise me to be anybody's fool.
Pre Chorus Playin' me, playin' me isn't cool..
Chorus 1 You showed me, mama told me, What you're all about. You showed me, mama told me, This will not work out.
Chorus 2 You showed me mama told me, You can not be true. You showed me, mama told me, You're nothing but bad news.
Break
Verse 3 Mama told me kiss that man good-bye, Find a man that don't need alibi's.
Short Bridge He's untrue..........
Verse 4 Mama said if that man get's a chance, He won't give you a second glance.
Pre Chorus He's played you, played you cause he can..
Chorus 1 He showed you, what mama told you, What he's all about. He showed you, what mama told you, This will not work out.
Chorus 2 He showed you, what mama told you, He can not be true. He showed you, what mama told you, He's nothing but bad news.
Otto He won't be takin' you, makin' you his fool..

It actually sounds a lot like Lou Reed! It's like Lou Reed with a sense of humor. And it just goes to show you that there are lots of different ways to eat--it's not always about meat, and everybody knows that greens are good for you. I also had a moment of amazement--you ended the song saying bye...and so did I! The last word in my song is "byebye". If you count "byebye" as a word. Anyway, thanks for the fun! And... bon apetit!-Marky

Nightengale, I really like this! I wish I could hear it, but I definitely understand that the idea of singing and posting it on the internet for the entire planet to hear can be a bit daunting. Well, that and not having a mic. But this is a great rock lyric...has a lot of room for attitude and emotion, and I've come to believe that's more important to a rock lyric than story, wordplay or even imagery. Nice one! Thanks for doing this...it's really fun for me to see, and hopefully a different kind of challenge for people to try.

Best Wishes, Big Guy-Hug, & THANKS for the Challenge! Stan Wow Stan, an entirely different angle. I like "Tighter"...great one-word hooks can really make a song, especially rock. One thing I want to make sure people understand is that I don't really have a melody here...I just have a backing band laying down the chords and the structure...finding a melody to sing is all part of the challenge here. Is any brave soul interested in singing these fine lyrics that Stan and Nightengale have written? The lyrics help you to map out the melody, you know... The more the merrier! I'll post my original in maybe a week, thought I'm getting tempted to try out a different melody too, just because this challenge thing is contagious! Thanks for playing everyone!

I can't look at/listen to what anyone else has done yet, still have the hope against hope I'll get into Dave's studio and do my version before I'm like 80! Mark, can I use your music? Dave said something about burning it on a cd...adding it on his computer as a track, adding my vocal, and mixing. Would that work?

Great Noel! Please do. I know this music is probably a little too boisterous for a lot of folks, but this idea seems like good practice for people who don't often get to work with existing music. I think I'll dig through the vault, find a few songs in different genres, and just post them up without vocals and call them Freeware. If someone actually manages to take one somewhere and somehow even makes money with it, at least I could say "Hey, I wrote that!"

.. even though rock lyrics can be simple and diverse as we see with Mark's challenge --- making a good sound rock SONG -- is a whole other level of challenge --- starting with a really solid bed track as Mark has here - definitely gives you a foot up .... I would reccommend that folks try this -- it's an 'aye' opener. : )
Thanks again Mark !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Joice! I want to wait quite a while before I post the original, because it tends to sway people too much, and I'm hoping others might still want to try this sometime. Funny thing is, now I keep hearing different melodies for this. For those who ARE attempting this for the first time and having trouble, maybe try this out: Think a section at a time. First just focus on that bit between 0:15 and 0:27 for awhile. Keep looping it or just "rewinding" as you try to hum some sort of melody that will sound cool. Don't try to match the same notes being played...try to find a riff that will stand out and sound good together with it. Once you get that much, see if it still sounds good repeating the same melody on the next section, 0:38 to 0:45. Still works? Great! Now you have a melody for the verses, and you can write four matching lyrics for it later. Now skip to the chorus (we'll get back to the pre-chorus later). What's a melody that will sound good from 0:45 to 0:56? Focus on that bit...it's the chorus, mind you, so make it fun. Do it just like the verse, by looping it, and trying different ways, over and over, until you find one that sounds cool to you. Once you've done that, you've already taken care of all three of the other choruses, so you can write the words later...(you can either repeat the same thing all four times, or have sort of a Part A Part B style that you repeat all over again at 1:55). Now that you have your chorus, what would be a cool way to lead into it? NOW is a good time to work that Pre-Chorus at 0:38...something that naturally takes you out of the verse melody and into the chorus melody. Once you have that, your composing duties are done! Except for that little wildcard at 1:31, but once you start writing your lyrics, that will probably just blurt right out of ya. Good luck, hope some more people give it a shot, just for the heck of it.

Ok here's my interpretation... I struggled with the chorus... the sung chorus (though not sure it could be classified as singing) is not the same as what is written... still not right but ... anyway I'd like thank the Muppet Band in particular Animal who steped away from the drums to take on lead vocal http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8387005Benny the Frog Copyright Downs/Kaufman Benny Alf was a strange looking boy, Bowed legs with a head on top, He hated school, The kids were cruel, They called him Benny the Frog. Weird kinda walk sorta wobbly kneed, He’d sway from side to side, No-one looked at him, He never fitted in, But he learned how to survive. Benny They called him Benny the Frog. Benny the Frog Kids were so danged cruel, They called him Benny the Frog. Benny the Frog Yeah those kids were so cruel, To Benny the Frog Was past 18 when fate stepped in, While picking grand pa’s guitar, It came as a shock, He could really rock, Soon he became a star, Benny the Frog Benny still looks pretty much the same, As he sways across the stage, Girls raise a din, They wanna be with him, To be the father of their babes. Benny They called him Benny the Frog. Benny the Frog Now they think Benny’s cool, Same kids who were so cruel. To Benny the Frog Benny the Frog Now they think Benny’s cool, Same kids who were so cruel. To Benny the Frog Benny the Frog They called him Benny the Frog.

WOOOOOOOHOO! You made it sound like something The Who would do! Very "Boris the Spider"-like! Only with Keith Moon doing the vocals. Haha! Gotta listen again.... Thanks Noel! -Mark

Holy Shipping Charge, Catwoman! I need a cold shower! Polly's no stranger to rock and roll, is she? Nice one! Love the badness of jumping in the back seat for a whiskey shot, hahaha...! Some very strange similarities to the original going on with these versions...one of the lines in mine, written way back in the mid-80's, was "he'll be drinkin' Johnnie Walker from a coffee cup..." And it ends with "bye bye"...so you and Calvin must be channeling something somehow...either that or you've hacked my computer, LOL. Rock on, Polly! Thanks for playin'!

I like "Kaufman karaoke." Nice ring to it. Mark, you should do more of these.
I don't think the slipping into the back seat for a shot of whisky is necessarily channeling--I think it's inherent in the genre. When I was a teenager, my dad warned me, "That jungle bunny music makes the teenaged girls all want to have sex." I've been playing it ever since...

Okay, I FINALLY got to read and listen to what everyone else did and (cub)SCOUTS honor...I DID NOT read or listen to anything before I did mine. Joice Marie...I loved your rendition. Some of our "vocal" notes sounded the same, but that was coincidence. Anyway, Spoon Dancin' was cool! Calvin...I am a great fan. You made this one just as great as your others. I love your spoken voice in it. Very cool! Nightengale, your lyric was good. I could see it fitting the musication. Noel, yeah, Mark nailed it on the head...very Keith Moon! Good job! I thank you all for your comments on my rendition. I am kind of a lil' sis cowering in the corner watching Mark. He had me at "Catwalk Candy" (Calvin collab) and I've always wanted to do something he wrote ever since. I'm so happy that I got to do the Kaufman karaoke thing, because it was a PERFECT way for me to test the lyricist/melodist waters and get to do something of Kaufman's! It made my week!

Well then, I'll definitely do more of these. Got a lot of different songs in different genres that would probably be put to better use letting people have fun playing with them than sitting in computers and notebooks and memories.
So fun to hear these! I'll post "Trip With Jimmy", the original, someday soon. Anyone else want to try this first?

First shot? No...I mean, I'll try to post more instrumental things that singers can sing, and/or songs with melodies that lyricists can write for. What the hell...it's only music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzjoqpTqSR4

I meant it as a joke Mark (should have put the smiley face by my post). "Tripping with Jimmy" sounds like something right up Calvin's alley!

Hi Neil
What a fun spin that was !! Ha very Cool
and Polly I think yours is rocking really -- it doesn't surprise me if notes cross over -- to me chords have a melody of their own. ;+)
So Mark is that the Title of YOURS -- Trip with Jimmy -- is that how I understand this?
anyway -- looking forward to hearing it jm

Well, seems to have run it's course, so here's the original version. It's really been a blast to hear all the different ways people found to put voices to this...so many different angles. Thanks for playing with me! http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8420012 Trip with JimmyJimmy's got a place by the Tastee Freez And he can get what you want if you give him a piece Of change A price in every range He'll be drinking Johnnie Walker from a coffee cup And you can drop by anytime 'cause the boy stays up For days Boy's got crazy ways And if he takes you for a ride You're gonna wake up on the other side And it takes you over (Jimmy teach you to fly) And it takes you under (See you baby, bye bye) Take a trip with Jimmy, wave bye bye And it takes you over (Jimmy teach you to fly) And it takes you under (See you baby, bye bye) Take a trip with Jimmy, wave bye bye At a slip of the tongue he'll put a trip in your brew And if you say Screw You then he'll say he loves you Too And you'll believe it's true Can't seem to stop that boy from trying And as the rock and roll screams the American Dream You feel your heart give out as you start to shout Your name Crazy crazy game And though your keys are on the shelf You feel you'll never quite retrieve yourself And it takes you over (Jimmy teach you to fly) And it takes you under (See you baby, bye bye) Take a trip with Jimmy, wave bye bye And it takes you over (Jimmy teach you to cry) And it takes you under (See you baby, bye bye) Take a trip with Jimmy, wave bye bye Bye bye Copyright 1987 by Mark Kaufman
