MY DOG JESUS
(Kurt Fortmeyer/CJ Watson/Al DeTrolio)

I found Jesus in the fall of '99
He was living with a Mexican in the trailer next to mine
I got down on my knees
He walked right up to me and licked my face
Old Pablo said He likes you so I guess that you're okay
I said What's his name

That's my dog Jesus now before you get all mad
There's lots of reasons why he's got a name like that
He's a shepherd and a good one
Man's best friend and then some
He loves me and forgives me no matter what I do
The kind of friend who'd give his life for you
That's my dog Jesus

I found Jesus on my porch at 4 AM
I couldn't stand to hear him crying I got up to let him in
That's when I saw the light
From the trailer next to mine burning down
By sunrise Shady Acres was a patch of smoking ground
And Jesus was nowhere to be found

Twelve people searched the rubble calling out his name
The firemen must have thought we all were crazy
But like the rest I knew I could have perished in those flames
And I would have too except that Jesus saved me

I found Jesus 'cause of what that dog showed me
I was baptized three days later in a church right down the street
My sins were washed away
I was crying as I prayed but through my tears
I heard that preacher saying hey who brought that dog in here
And Pablo he answered loud and clear

That's my dog Jesus now before you get all mad
There's lots of reasons why he's got a name like that
He's a shepherd and a good one
Man's best friend and then some
He loves me and forgives me no matter what I do
The kind of friend who'd give his life for you
That's my dog Jesus that's my dog Jesus
Thank you Jesus

I liked this song the first time I read it. Nice to hear it set to music. I think y'all did a great job. The mandolin riff at the end is a nice touch.

Really nice job Kurt. Just a couple things. First, with Pablo being Hispanic, he would pronounce the name "Hey-soos" so you might change his name and take out the Mexican reference. I know it's a pain to redo the vocals though. Great story song and a little humor at the end when the preacher sees the dog in church. I love the chorus. The song ministers to others without being intrusive, corny or preachy which makes it more universal which is really good. Plus, the title drug me in here. I didn't know what I was going to get. I thought it might be derogatory in a fashion but instead I got a great spiritual message from it. Really nice job there.

Steve, I think I'd disagree about the pronunciation of "Jesus." It's true Pablo is obviously Hispanic, and *he*'d pronounce it "Hey-soos," but he's not the one singing the song. The song is obviously being sung by an American guy, and he's likely to pronounce it "Jee-sus" no matter what Pablo said. I think it's probably okay.

This is a great message--and yes, the title sure does drag you in. Good job.

Hi Kurt,

This is one of those songs I read and think "How's he gonna sing all those words to the beat." Now that I hear it, I am impressed. Very well written and musicated. Thank you for sharing it.

Hi Kurt,

good one, love it. Well done!
You have a gift for giving the words unexpected layers of meaning, that's truly enjoyable. And the music's quite cool as well. Definitely a keeper!

Cheers, Yann

Hi Joe,
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
A funny story about that riff...I have always tagged the song with that run, and I have always played a 2 minor chord as the next to last note. My producer Duane (who is way more musically adept than me) called me out on it. He said it needed to be a 5 chord. I told him it was a "Let It Be" chord, figuring he couldn't argue with that (he was in Paul McCartney's band for a while) and I could play it the way I wanted to. Mind you, I usually took his advice whenever he offered it. So, I played the 2 minor chord, and he played the mandolin on top of it. I don't even know what it is now. I think we both ended up getting our way.
Thanks for listening.

Hi Steve,
I have heard that argument ad nauseum. We spent a great deal of time thinking this song through. Having worked in the construction trades and the restaurant business (I am a songwriter after all. LOL) I have met many Hispanic people who have Anglicized their names to make it easier for the gringos.
Felipe becomes Phillip, Jaime becomes Jamie, etcetera. Not to say that they all do, but it is not an uncommon practice.
The name Pablo sings way better in this context than the name Paul, and Hispanics are way more prone to use the name Jesus (however they choose to pronounce it) than non-Hispanics. Besides, I wouldn't want to change a true story now, would I?

Hi NaomiSue,
When I perform this live, I never tell people the title up front.
It often gets some laughs when I say "living with a Mexican" and some odd looks when I say he "licked my face". When I hit the chorus, some folks are laughing and some are still not sure what to think, but by the time I'm about 3 lines in, people start coming around. I even get a few "amen"s from time to time. If people can get past the title with an open mind, they usually are quite pleased with the rest of the song. I hear lots of dog stories from people after they've heard this song....

This is a fine, fine song. I first saw this, er, elsewhere...and read a big to-do about it...but I liked the lyric right away, and hearing it really sealed the deal. Really ought to find its way into the right ears someday...this should be on the radio. Great write, guys!

Very nice Kurt. The lyrics seem to fit the song quite well and you create great imagery.

hey Kurt...you're right, you've heard it before. I've lived in California and Arizona most of my life and I've never heard a Mexican pronounce the Jesus differently than hay-soos. not once. Pablo/Paul...yes. Maria/Mary...here and there. Jesus, nope. the name has a different meaning in English for obvious reasons. if the dog's owner pronounces his own name as "Pablo", he's gonna call the dog "hay-soos", and the narrator will follow suit. that invalidates the song's premise.

it is well crafted for what you'd normally find on the Net...it's just not grounded in reality. more like a Nashville Aesop's fable.

I'm sure you've pitched this on the Row...be honest, has a publisher ever raised that point?

This is always one of my favorite songs.

For those of you coming late to the party, this is one of the favorite songs of people around Nashville. It is very well written and emphasises the problem that some people have when they just pay attention to songs "on paper." They don't have the same impact as when they are performed.
In the same way some songs can get on the charts and people don't understand how they got on there. The fact is the artist, writer, and many people in the record label chain of command all agree on the validity of the song.
In this one, the whole point of Pablo and the Mexican names are Exactly the way it should be done. In the "Hey-suess" aspect, as Kurt says, I have heard that one. Just don't agree with it.
Proves the point that music is not just about rhyming some words or playing pretty chords. It is about heart and finding a way to take the listener on a journey that they will remember and want to come back to.
I have never seen anyone who has heard this song and not be affected by it positively.

You always have my vote Kurt.

Marc, why don't you agree with that objection? "hay-soos" is how the name Jesus is pronounced by Mexicans. doesn't reality have to enter into art? it's not a rhyming issue or a chord issue...it's a fact issue.

Couch, it happens. I just asked my sandwich cook Rafael about it, he laughed and said it depends on whether he's speaking in English or Spanish.

Excellent! At first I thought it was hokey but as the song went along I saw how you kept true to form until the end. And hey! What red, white and blue american red-neck boy would DARE call his German Shepherd "hay-soos"? What kind of sissy name is that anyway? It's like the dog's real name is "soos" and you're saying "Hey" to him. Jesus works for me.

An Absolutely GREAT and Very DIFFERENT One, Brother Kurt!

It's always enjoyable to have some FUN as a Message..or two..gets-delivered. I enjoyed how your plotline evolved, how ya "Explained-Away" the pooch's Name, and how the Dog parallels His Namesake particularly-well.

The puns on some (Occasionally-Overused) Christian Slogans..."Jesus was nowhere to be found" and "Jesus Saved Me" were brilliant and fabulous Fun.

"KUDOS" and "AMEN" on a Really Fine Song, Amigo!
Continued Good Luck with it,
& A Big Guy-Hug,
Stan

Kurt....I don't care how you pronounce or don't pronounce it. This song is about as cleverly written to get a point across as I've ever heard.....drew me into it like a dog to a bone.

Bravo.....

Hello Robert,
It's nice to hear from you.
Honestly, I have never had a publisher on the Row raise that ojection to this song. I have had several say that it's a great song (including a Christian music publisher who told me that it was "magnificent writing" and another Christian music writer who said he wanted to keep a copy just because it was "so much fun")but it will never get cut. That's one of the reasons why I cut it myself. That and the fact that every time I play it live, somebody asks if I have a CD for sale. Now I do. The people who take issue with (or make point about) the pronunciation of Jesus are invariably knowitall writers who want A)to try to show me how smart or wordly they are, or B)to try to take their perceived competition down a notch.
Changing the next door neighbor character from being a Mexican would not change the premise of the song, it would just take some of the color out of the story. Likewise, having him be a Mexican does not invalidate the premise.
Now that I've been honest with you, maybe you should be honest with yourself and everyone else here. You have other issues involving this song, and those are not going to change even if we were to change the neighbor character (which we are most decidedly not). I can't make you happy. I'm not going to try.
Have a nice day, if you can.

I have to second Jan. When you READ it, you might wonder what's up with the whole Jesus/HeySoos thing. But when you listen, which is what we tend to do with songs, it just doesn't matter. You're not analyzing at that point, you're just being carried along by the story. And it's a good one.

I'd think this would be your signature song, Kurt. But maybe you have others. I mean, a dog named Jesus and a song with a word that has a hundred letters, anything is possible... grin

Kurt (& everyone else)

I'm just coming back to say: sometimes we feel we HAVE to have nits about a song, otherwise it's not worth the comment. I'd like to add something to what I've already said: guys, perfect doesn't exist in this world, but we should acknowledge good when it's good, and that song is REALLY DAMN GOOD, whatever the minor things we would have changed in order to fit our particularities. Kurt, I first thought to say, well, I would have changed this or that, and, Hey man, I have another idea that could be good too ... then I realised: this song does all the job it needs to do in its actual form, no one does have to change anything, it's amazingly GOOD as is and whoever has wriiten this is a GREAT writer. And I'd like to say this too: Marc often tells us to 'flip the desk' and try to understand how the publisher uses his ears. I'd say we songwriters also have to put ourselves in the audience's place: maybe I'll hurt some feelings there, but I really think that whoever dislikes this song must certainly be a songwriter.
Keep them coming, Kurt, I'm a fan.
Cheers, Yann

Kurt,

This is amazingly good.

Don't feel bad about it not getting cut. This song, and your cut of it, are what radio SHOULD sound like.
