Having a tough time with this one. Can't seem to find an arrangement of instruments that I really like. Any thoughts on that, or any other aspect, are appreciated. Been a few songs posted lately that have other people singing as a theme. Here's mine. Your Voice Singing is here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=377550&songID=8211995Lyric is below. Thanks! Scott Your Voice Singing (c) 2009 by S.W. Campbell When there’s no breeze to stir the heather And you can hear the falling of a feather When you can hear a lone grasshopper springing I hear the sound of your voice singing When hurricanes send waves a’bashing And lightening skies send thunder crashing Though sirens wail and bells be ringing I hear the sound of your voice singing Through all the miles I’ve put behind me Your song has never failed to find me And when I to my last breath be clinging I’ll hear the sound of your voice singing

Scott,
I like this one a lot, and I think you are close. The basic lyric, melody and chords are working.
I wanted to hear a tremolo mandolin or one doing some single note runs from verse one. I think you used it as an additional chord instrument from verse two? I think that worked to raise the intensity, but can't stand alone IMO
Due to the lyric, I can see why you chose to work with a building harmony vocal arrangement, but somehow that didn't work for me here.
I wanted more of the feeling you provided in verse one. I pictured an epic rural scenario from the wild west. So I would take off the harmonies (there are noone else in the scenario the lyric portrays, right?). Instead I would take in a mando, fiddling around a bit, perhaps some strings (yes, to underscore the epic scenario - the 'singing' couldbe in the strings), and perhaps a hand drum in the end to build it.
That way you build the arrangement almost like a film track. I think that'll be the way to go with this. Doubling some fiddles could work in stead of strings, if you want to keep the natural instumentation.
Well, just throwing some ideas off the cuff, hoping to trigger some of your own KOS
Bottom line - it's a beautiful song that deserves the best IMO

the instruments you used seemed fine to me.. It's kindof short, but very very good. Great idea. what's a "heather" ?

I really enjoyed that one. I was thinking a fiddle or mandolin would be a good addition. I like the contrast in imagery between verse 1 and verse 2 (but you can still hear her singing).
Another excellent tune!

Hi Scott,
This is just so heartfelt and beautiful, I don't have words!
I think your arrangement is nice. I think you've got the right idea. Think of Mike Scott's simple arrangements as the leader of the "Waterboys" his songs were all about the spirit in his voice and the magic of his words...and an occasional great fiddle solo, like on "Fisherman's Blues."
You could go big on the last chorus, with reverb and a deep Irish drum...a boudran, perhaps, and a fiddle?
I wouldn't do too much, as you might lose the intimacy that you gain from your simple arrangement. As "nice" as those Enya records sound, they're rather impersonal, you know? Yes...late Waterboys make a nice template for what you have going on here. I think you need very little else going on to make it perfect.
Mike

Such a warm, good feeling tune Scott. I think your instrumentation works very well. In fact, now I can't imagine it done any better way to capture the warmth. Best, John

It needs bagpipes.......Seriously now it is a great piece and terrific arrangement as is. My only nit.... it is too short at 2.18. perhaps add a chorus or another verse? When I read the lyrics I immediately thought.. OH OH!... Scott is mentioning heather.... Heather!....Oh no....not another Grannies Highland home song. But with a name like Scott Campbell what do you expect.....LOL Well Scott wrote a song any Scotsman would be proud to sing and he's not even Scottish. Great job Scott your versatility and skills amaze me. I cannot fault anything except in this case more is more.

Hi Scott,
This is lovely. Beautiful lyric….so visual and moving.
I like the music and your singing as is….but if you decide to try some of these suggestions, maybe you could post another version and let us compare?!

anyway thats my bit. good luck Roy Thank-you very much, Roy. One frustrating thing for me is to write a song that my voice isn't right for. I mean singing it is half of the fun for me. So I've been trying to write songs that my voice has a decent chance of sounding appropriate on. Glad it seems to have worked here. Scott

Thanks for the detailed review and suggestions, Magne! What bothered me most about it was that I thought the change in the music going from V1 to V2 was a bit jarring. I wanted to beef up the single picked guitar in V1 with a strum but couldn't find one that sounded right. The song is in waltz time so that might be why. Everything I tried seemed either too plodding or too intense. But one way to soften the transition a little would be to drop the harmony in V2. I might do that since Bob suggested it too. Can also try to bring the rhythm guitar in a little slower. I used my "poor man's mando" on this - a guitar capoed up high. You're right - I did that soley to bring up the intensity. Just realized from your post though that, with the exception of the harmonica, I don't have a single lead instrument in this. No wonder I was able to record it quickly. So I'll play with dropping the harmony in V2. Can think about adding strings too - though I'd want to keep them pretty subtle. Might play around with some fills in V1 too, though I'm not confident about that. But hey, if I don't like it, I don't have to use it. Thanks again for the ideas, Magne. Scott

Great idea. what's a "heather" ? She was a really hot girl that sat behind me in 8th grade. Oh, you mean in the song. Big Jim can probably give a better description. It's a shrub that grows wild in Europe and the UK. I believe heather is to the UK as sage brush is to our southwest. Thought about adding a bridge to it - to pin it down a little better. Decided I like it better without. Thanks Louis! Scott

I don't think I'll add to much - if I add something, I'll probably take something away to keep it simple. Maybe with the exception of V1, which I still think might need something. Thanks! Scott

Mike Thanks, Mike! Yeah, I don't want it to get out of hand. I did try some percussion during the instrumental break and it didn't add anything to it for me so I dropped it. Didn't think about V3 though - might be worth a shot. I saw your message earlier today and was anxious to check out the Waterboys - but I don't have i-tunes at work. Probably a good thing Something fun to do before hitting the sack tonight though. Appreciate the comments and suggestions, Mike! Scott

Great job Scott your versatility and skills amaze me. I cannot fault anything except in this case more is more. Bagpipes would be cool! I had a student that played the pipes but he's gone. Probably a good thing for him. Yeah, I'm three generations removed from being a Scotsman. I can still remember my grandmother speaking in a thick brogue though. Glad that the song didn't sound fake to a true Scotman. I imagine a name like Scott Campbell must be a little peculiar to you. Would be like a guy here named USA Jones. Hey, that has a ring to it! I could lengthen the song - probably by adding a bridge. I was thinking along those lines at one point but decided that if I wrote more it would probably steer the song more than I wanted to. What I've been thinking of is having it as the last track on a CD - it's nice to end with something short and uplifting. Thanks for the very nice words, Big Jim! Scott

Hi Scott....Very Very Nice!!...This wouldn't be out of place on "Scottish Folk Album"...Big Jim suggested the pipes.....well that is definately one option, bit it would really need to be in Bb..or Eb to suit the pipes(preferrably Bb)..personally i don't think it needs any additional instruments,,,what i would suggest is ,taking it up a semi-tone on the last verse, and doing a repeat, and bringing in a choir, and really add dynamics to it. ireally think you should persevere with this song, and get it out there, there is definatly a market for it..All The Best...Terry..

Hi Terry: Nice to hear from you. Glad to have another confirmation that I don't sound totally like an imposter You know, that idea of going up a semitone is something I always tell myself to try (when I hear it in a song) but then always forget to do. Is a cool idea - worth exploring. The repeat too - I really should have done that in the first place. Guess I was to anxious to get to the choir part. Thanks for the support and suggestions - I will keep working it, alright. Scott

Hi Scott,
This is really great. I think your choice of instruments is just fine and your voice in top form. It sounds like a PD song. Your thought of a final cut on a CD would be perfect. Long or short, when you've said all you want to say, the song is done! Thanks for sharing all your wonderful talents.

Oh, this is heartbreakingly lovely. It reminded me as well of the lovely Irish folk song "Go Lassie, Go" (I think it's sometimes also called "Wild Bloomin' Heather".) Your voice here has the perfect poignant edge, and the instruments are lovely. Like some of the others here, I could envisage one or two additions, but even as it is, ithe song's a gem. Donna

Hey Scooter,
Lovin' the feel of this one. The lyrics are so pretty and yet your great gravelly voice gives them a "manly edge", if you will.
Musically, your choices work fine for me....although I would not be averse to the addition of a fiddle (one of my fave instruments!)....
At any rate, you have a lot of fun suggs to think about. I'll be keeping my eyes and ears open for any updates.
In the meantime, thanks for sharing!

This is so beautiful, Scott! I'm going to e-mail it to Andy (Glasgow, Scotland). I know he'd LOVE IT! I loved the rythm, the melody the imagery, the instrumentation, and YOUR VOICE! Yes, it was perfect for it! I'm going for another listen!

Dan Cool to get a repeat listen. Thanks Dan! I think of myself as a jack of all trades and a master of none. Scott

Scott...
How about "jack of many trades and master of several"? That's believable for me.

Scott;
I've been listening to this song for a couple of days now and it just gets better with repetition. Very uplifting, great job.

Alan I dunno, Alan - once I know what I'm doing with something, I tend to lose interest in it Makes it hard to master anything but it's fun anyway Scott

Scott:
I liked it a lot. In skimming the responses I noticed there were some suggestions of how to lengthen the song. I like the format just fine (although I would have probably tried a bridge like you did) but have you thought about repeating the first verse at the end, going right back to the single guitar accompaniment? Maybe you could change the repeated verse to something like:
Now there’s no breeze to stir the heather And you can hear the falling of a feather There's no clouds in the sky and no birds winging There's just the sound of your voice singing
...or maybe you can just leave it like it is. It works. (Sorry, I haven't been writing too many songs lately and I got a little carried away there...)
Well crafted and recorded (as expected!)
Mark

This is a good one, Scott. I think it gets off to a slow start though - just need a few small fills between the vocals in and after verse one. Harmonica, mandolin or acoustic guitar would work (no not all of them).
My two cents! KOS
