My question here is really; "Have I explained enough why she's my crosstown baby? or do I have to?
my crosstown baby is my sweet lady she calls me up an 'drives me crazy when she plays my heart like a song-sweetened saxophone she calls me honey when she needs some lovin' an' like a hound-dog puppy I come a-runnin' to get her motor gunnin' all night long yeah she's everything i need satisfaction guaranteed to chase my blues away i got a ticket to a seat on a rocket heading east now i'm on my way to see my crosstown baby my sweet lady she calls me honey an 'drives me crazy but my crosstown baby's got her love waitin' on me you know my temperature's up an' my heart's beating faster an' i know this time i'm gonna ask her if she'll be my baby from here to eternity
so i found my keys on the bathroom floor an' i grabbed my coat an' i hit the door an' i was on her road like a bee in a southern breeze yeah i can knock on wood cause i know in my heart she makes me feel so good we're never gonna part she's mine an' i'm hers an' that's a real good place to be oh she gives me sweet lovin' there won't be any other way to save my soul yeah she spins my head around i'm in love an' out o' bounds she makes me lose control my crosstown baby is my sweet lady she calls me up an 'drives me crazy but my crosstown baby's got her love waitin' on me you know my temperature's up an 'my heart's beating faster an' i know this time i'm gonna ask her if she'll be my baby from here to eternity if she'll be my baby from here to eternity

Other than the fact that she's apparently 'across town' I don't see any explanation.
I think I'd still call her 'Crosstown Baby' in the last line of the chorus.
if she'll be my Crosstown Baby from here to eternity
It looks like a mouthful of words. I assume it will play quickly, rhythmically. Some lines are longer than the same line in the other verse, and may be problematic.
Any more 'set-up' for the title may not be necessary. Do you think it needs more?
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Once you begin to share a household, then of course the phrase "Crosstown Baby" would be no longer accurate. But at least this is a positive take about someone from the other side of town. In the day there were many negatives concerning this issue, as people were forbidden to date those from "the other side of town." Today the only negative might be the gasoline expense if the commute is huge; say from 10000 or so west to 10000 or so east, or from north to south.
Anyhow, good write reminiscent of an early rock 'n roll sound, I do believe.

He might still call her "Crosstown Baby" as a term of endearment.

Yes, that is true. Lots of terms of endearment do stick even when their original meaning is no longer valid. One of the more commons terms of endearment is also a pastry and, yes, it was a song too. "Honey Bun" from South Pacific.

Ptondreau,
I wrote a song about my voo doo lady! Your title needs to stir a little intrigue, mystery--give a strong attractive reason--burning finger tips--clinging, lingering perfume--breathing rhythms........pedal to the metal to get to her--Maybe she has someone else you don't know about yet--there is always a secret--Secrets are what everybody else knows but YOU. Close your eyes and picture a little story--like a mini-short-short story.
Hone..Hone..Re-write.... over and over... Have Fun!!!
Respectfully, Mackie Humphries

mjh, crosstown baby started out as a working title that fit a rythmn i had going on. i thought there's not enough "intrigue" as you say. but i'm hard pressed to put it somewhere in the song without throwing out something. but like you say, rewrite is part of the process. thanks everyone for the feedback
