I bought a used outboard compressor recently and I downloaded the manual from PreSonus. The manual contains lots of info about the use of compression including settings for many different applications. The settings can be used for any compressor or plug-in so if anyone is interested, here is the link. Check out pages 7 - 9.

That seems like a nice unit. I like the controls - very stright forward. It seems that it is discontinued, which is curious becuase it has received good reviews and is well priced. How do you like it

Hi Tom,

The PreSonus Bluemax is the only compressor I have tried other than the one on my guitar pedalboard. Prior to getting it (used at a pawnshop), I was doing my compression after the fact with a plug-in. Having said that, the Bluemax is great. I have been using the presets and have noticed a huge improvement on vocals and miked acoustic guitar. It brings out the fine details of the performance which otherwise get lost. It does not create any noise of its own, but like any compressor, it amplifies the background noise when there is nothing going on so you need to go back in and quiet those sections down post recording.

I think Presonus has newer models available but a used Bluemax would be fine if it works properly. I highly recommend it.

Colin, the new presonus compressor in that price range has very limited controls. The one you have has excellent controls. Hope you enjoy it.

Presonus makes some very respectable gear. I haven't tried any of their compressors.

This is my "go-to" compressor for vocals and acoustic guitar.

It's called the "Really Nice Compressor" or RNC. For the money, I haven't found or heard of anything better. It's only $175.

Larry, does it function as a pre-amp also? I could not tell from the information I saw.

I just got the TC Electronic C300 compressor/ gate for my signal chain. http://www.tcelectronic.com/c300.asp

Can't wait to try it out in the coming weeks, these baby's get excellent reviews everywhere, and is so easy to use.

TC Electronics is a very well reputable danish company, and I love the sound of their stuff!

No, it's line-level input and output only. You still need a preamp. They also make a very well thought-of preamp (same company).

Compressors shouldn't amplify background noise, in fact they shouldn't do anything if the signal is below threshold.

An Automatic Gain Control will amplify background noise when signal falls below the threshold. Does the Presonus have an AGC mode?

I started off getting in to post punk and synth pop.
The old school type where they recorded on practically nothing.

Having a loud, distorted synth bass come out clearly in the digital enviroment seemed a bit of a challenge.

I have Audacity, yet I do not use anything outside of the panning.
The effects on software ouside of .wav only give what the manufacturer of that asseses what people like.
I don't get much in to the hardware or have used rack mounts.
My pet peeve before recording on the intenet was recording on whatever I could find and often what was not meant for music.
A stereo delay pedal is what I had for compression and tone.

I look at the tone, verb, and echo, and try to use it not to make an instrument sound too weak or abrasive.

Probably would not fit in to professional standards.
But professionalism in music is not always a semblence of quality or how I would like to sound.

Less can equal more.

I think the worse thing for someone starting to record is to get a special piece of software like cubase to compensate for what they can not do by hand.
There also does not seem to be the clarity between the instruments or the acoustics with the special software or new fangled devices.
I have looked at vintage compression devices more lately.
I want to do something in more of a conventional pop/rock vein and combine that with the root influence, but with the older technology.

Software like Cubase is great to add with, but not if you have a certain sound in your mind you are searching for.

I would rather have the flat recording means and try to find my way there.

Thanks for the info!

Just for info most modern programs especially the top end ones allow infinite control over what is recorded and how it is edited and added to etc. It is a tool to be used. How much or little an individual chooses to use it is up to him. Each to his own. That said I bet if you understood properly what could be achieved and how simply it could be achieved and learned the whys and wherefores of modern sound technology then you might change your attitude.
I would also bet that most of your heroes even the punks use this technology and in a lot of cases actually pioneered it.

My PreSonus does not have a threshold setting as such. The threshold is fixed, although each preset has its own saved setting. You can vary the input control to affect how much compression is going on.....which I guess determines when you exceed the preset threshold. There is no Automatic Gain Control mentioned but it might have one internally. I need to experiment more with the input control.

I read up on the Presonus. You are correct that you do not have an adjustable threshold. They seem to have adapted the same trick that Ashly audio used to use in the SC-50 compressor, where you increased the input gain until your signal level was above the fixed threshold.

The downside of this design is that it increases the noise floor.
I suspect that this is why few compressors were designed in this manner.

I also have an RNC and it is my main compressor for tracking vocals. I agree with Larry that it is a "Really Nice Compressor." It is definitely worth the money if you need an outboard compressor.

Here is a neat article about compression it also covers various other plugins and how to use them. I like how it discusses the issues of bad recording etc and how to make them sound better using plain language and easy to follow instructions.

"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life!
