Studpid questions time.
Okay, 60 beats is a minute is a beat a second, right? Quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, or hemidemisemiquavers, 60 beats a minute is a beat a second, right?
If the answer to the question above is Yes, you can plan play 90 quarter notes a minute. Does this mean you've changed tempo?
In the clock example, why not use all 1/8 notes instead of 1/4 notes? Is it because it would all be too monotonous if you did?

EB, At 60 bpm, with quarter notes getting one beat, only 60 quarter notes would fit into a minute's time. At 60 bpm, 90 quarter notes (jammed into 60 bpm) would no longer get one beat each. It would be closer to 2/3's of a beat each. Two 8th note triplets would cover 2/3's of a beat when the quarter note gets one beat. Regardless 60 bpm will remain 60 bpm. The speed of the notes would be determined by what note gets one beat. If a half-note gets one beat at 60 bpm, a quarter-note in that time signature would be equivalent to 120 bpm with quarter-note getting one beat. Personally, I prefer tomatoes over beets. John

Thanks John.
I'm listening to my metronome now. Would it be safe to safe the tempo and bpm mean the same thing?

Thanks John.
I'm listening to my metronome now. Would it be safe to safe the tempo and bpm mean the same thing? Yes. if you set the metronome to 70, it would mean 70 beats per minute(bpm). Set it at 120, it would be 120 bpm, etc. Best, John

The idea of 60 tomatoes a minute is kinda scary.

Yes, if your MM=90 per quarter note you are at a faster tempo in comparison to MM=60 per quarter note. Could you use eighth notes instead of quarter notes? well, yes. Keep in mind there is more than one way to compose a passage or phrase, and also consider what you want to say musically dictates how you are going to write your piece.

The quarter note is not necessarily the beat set by the metronome. I sometimes like to set a metronome beat to the eight note when I'm recording. That really tightens the rhythm.
One recording trick I used recently was to help a singer to swing against a background of long legato chords. I set a click track (metronome) to beat three times per quarter note and let the singer record with it. Then I removed the click track and her voice had a natural swing/shuffle feel to it.
There's nothing like a metronome to improve your playing.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music
