Some Days

Rain Falls
Out of a smoky sky
Wind blows
Without a reason why
Some days
Even the birds hide

Clouds grow
And color me so blue
cold air
Follows my bitter mood
Some days
Do nothing but intrude

When you’re here
I laugh out loud
You comfort me
and relieve my doubts
Some days
I know what life’s about

(Instrumental)

Your love
Eases my anxious mind
Beside you
I slowly can unwind
Some days
Are just fine

When you’re here
I laugh out loud
You comfort me
and relieve my doubts
Some days
I know what life’s about

Some walk, some run
some crawl on hands and knees
you're the one with whom I want to share
every one of these
some days

Some days
Some days
Some days

Hey guys...

don't know if it's my computer or Soundclick, but I'm having a tough time opening the song. I'll try again later. Perusal of the lyrics has me terribly curious to hear the song.

Guess all it took was me having to post and complaing about not being to hear the song for it to decide to open! And I'm so glad it did! I totatlly dig this vibe. It has such a <snapping fingers trying to think of what it reminded me of> sound to it. Got a feeling I know what songs gonna be bouncing around in the ol' grey matter now for most of the day...

I will say that right about 2:30-ish in the song vocally I thought of Robbie Robertson...in a good way!

Man, that's just perfect. Just an amazing match between lyric and music - each suits the other perfectly. Kudos to both of you!

You have such an attention to detail, Mike. For each vocal line, I can tell that you thought "what's a good way to deliver this one?"

Same with the arrangement - bringing in different instruments at just the right time really give it a dynamic feel. And the change-up on the Some walk - some run line is perfect.

This has such a cool feel. I'll listen to it a few more times not only because it's a cool song but because I can study the arrangement too and pick up a few ideas!

Michael and Kristi,
No fair you are too good!
Great sound you should give siminars on how to record. I could drive to Sacramento no prob. Might be troublesome for all the folks that are east of us.

Michael, you don't just have a computer, a program, etc. Tell me you have a pro set up cause that just sounds great. And I listened to it on sound click and it was fabulous.

Interesting I tried steaming garage band first and it did not work so I got the chance to read Kristi's lyric first and imagine how it would translate stylalistically. And I was surprised by the Raggae treatment.

Very inventive treatment indeed. I think you took a lyric that had a kind of sad feel, even though, it has a happy ending and gave it a sureal feel. I liked that type of juxtoposition alot.

Not wild about these lyrics:

Some walk, some run
some crawl on hands and knees
you're the one with whom I want to share
every one of these
some days

The instrumental could use a little livening up. (Just my taste)

but all the rests sounds very good to me. Love the harmonies.

I listened to this on the Garage Band link. Worked perfectly for me.

Good luck with this.

Hi Terrill,

This, to me, sounds like Graham Nash singing with Waylon Jennings' bass player, in Peter Gabriel's basement. It's a good thing when I orchestrate and arrange, I don't think these kinda thoughts, or I'd probably go "NO no no..." and not let myself have fun with the process!

I listened to the album by Robbie Robertson that I think you are referring to (self titled, produced by Daniel Lanois...had an American Indian vibe if I remember...)...in fact I listened to that and only one or two others on a cross country bus to New Orleans in the late 80s.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Scott,

I got lucky with the dumbek, the Middle Eastern drum in the latter parts. I know it's a good sign when the "tuned percussion" happens to be in the right key...in this case, the wacky key of Bb minor, lol! ...and yet to get membranes like congas, bongos, etc. to be pounding out those key notes is like "bass helper", lol...they interact with the bass line in interesting ways, and I might have to go back and see if there are any "smears" of sound present, though I didn't notice any right off.

Thanks for the "details" compliment...I sometimes get to the end of the song and realize I've made a horrible mistake, as to how I sing something, and then do punch ins...this had a few...not saying what! lol...thanks again...

Mike

Hi Mike and Kristi,

I love this!

I love the lyric, the music, and the arrangement. I especially love your vocals and harmony Mike, you sound amazing! Your production sounds perfect to me. I like the processing on "intrude". I love the bluesy lead guitar licks.

Another great collaboration, one that sounds mastered to perfection, good job to both of you

Hi Mike. Great production and match to the lyric. Both excellent. The vocal mix reminds me a bit of Simon and Garfunkle. Really, really nice.

Hi Mike & Kristi,

You two are on fire! Very cool lyric and what a wonderful interpretation musically!

Some days
I know what life’s about

I've had both of these, and some days it's the same day!

Mike & Kristi:

Another killer production of another killer song. This song starts off strong but it hits a whole new level once the harmonies start. I hope you start finding a home for some of these songs. They should be heard by more than just the JPF community.

As far as constructive criticism...I got nothing. Loved it.

Mark

Mike/Kirsti,

I enjoyed the song very much!

Somehow the lyrics gets kind of vague with the "Some", but I guess thats the point. By doing that it eludes a big lyrical payoff, I think (because the 'some' IS the point), and that turns the song into a piece which calls for a musical treatment creating a pleasant listening environment.

Personally, I wasn't as fond of this lyric like some of the recent ones you've presented, for the reasons I mentioned.

I think you did a really great job of creating a nice mood for this, Mike. All of the instrumental hooks, and the instrumental development throughout, is really doing an excellent job to create interest and variation to draw me in as a listener.

I would say that the whole of this presentation exceeds the parts, and then mission must be accomplished.

Hi Tom,

Sorry, but it's true, since 2002, it's all coming out of the PC and a Shure 57 microphone and Behringer Preamp. I actually restrung my Takemine guitar and am planning to build up the calluses, and it's funny, but the hands haven't forgotten anything, and it's been ten years without touching a guitar, after being a pretty good finger picker in the 90s...that was the sacrifice made to learn all this software...

All I do is listen to music that I like in a cheap set of headphones, and get a mental template for how I want my recordings to sound, in terms of air and depth of field, I use as little compression as possible, and do "automated gain riding" in my sequencer, and prefer letting the VU meters occasionally hit zero, rather than flatlining them constantly.

Thanks for the kind words, Tom.

Mike

Hi Jean,

The lyric in the bridge was my idea, but to Kristi and me, it seemed to solve the problem of how to make a sweeping and positive statement with '(some) days' as the object of that statement. That being, get the listener to hear "quotation marks" around "some days" in some way, and then talk about "ALL of them", which is what we did. Granted, it sounds a little "Henry Higgins" there, for it's a little wordy, but it was a carefully thought out thought, and the wordiness of the bridge MIGHT be considered a nice contrast to the brevity of elsewhere, to others.

I went subtle this time in the instrumental. One of the first records I ever bought was Deodato's "Prelude". He was a Brazilian jazz composer who played a lot of Rhodes keyboard at the time. You many remember he had a hit with his rendering of "Also Sprach Zarathustra"...

Glad you enjoyed it, otherwise!

Mike

I could just tell you what’s good about this song. But that’s not me.
I listened at least 5 times. COOL FEEL!
I listen for two reasons.
For you. And I listen for me to learn what works and what does not work so…

I like this, it feels a bit mechanical and short. but that may be your style.
I do think that it needs to be softened/warmer.
The intro hook has too much going on and the sound is generic and weak. (IMO)
You need a new intro hook.. You are not grabbing me.
I love the lyrics and the song as a whole and the textures are nice.

Peace,
Dave

Spelling and grammer are not my thing, so excuse the type-Os...

Iffin I don't review your song, sorry, I'm trying to stay with styles I like. But I do listen to all on 2 pages when I have time. \:\)

Hi Calvin,

Thanks!

Kristi has a way of saying meaningful, oft times profound things, in an off-handed, conversational way. smile

"Some days I know what life's about" was a favorite line in my favorite verse, that I highlighted by turning it into a chorus by simply changing the music there. It's one of those choruses that is weak in the sense that it sings metrically identical in the verses, but this made it a challenge for me to make the music really different and interesting and fulfilling there. smile

Thanks again!

Mike

This has a unique but cool sound to it. I am not real keen on the echo on intrude, cause it all seems so smooth and that seems to interfer a bit, just my opinion, keep or sweep. It makes me think of Sting. Nice job to both of you!! smile Kimberly

Kristi, Mike,
what a great feel and rich production. Really good lyric with some great lines too.

the passage of time (walk, run, crawl) at the end seemed like a lyrical drop off after the depth of the rest. Like something more emotionally charged would slam it home. Something about hope, faith, desire, anticiption rather than the speed of tim passing. Animate them.

some whimper some beg
some can't wait to please
you're the one...

for poor example. Anyway I do like it a lot.

Have fun,
John

Hi Ricki,

Thanks, "on fire" is quite a nice compliment!

I never thought about it much before Kristi's lyric, but it is true, each day seems to take on its own characteristics and personality.

The subtext in all this that humans have the ability to take a deep breath and "reset" and allow for this "some days" phenomenon to happen: most of us wake up in the morning with few expectations and walk with our "day" and let it become what it will. smile

Thanks again,

Mike

Hey everybody…..Terrill, Scott, Tom F, Jean, Kevin, Calvin, Letha, Steve, Ricki, Louis, Mark S, Magne, Dave, Kimberly, John H....just chiming in to say thanks for all your wonderful comments and suggestions and very nice words! smile

It’s fascinating to hear what Mike comes up with…his creativity is never-ending!

Calvin & Ricki…thanks for your input on that line… “some days I know what life’s about”…as you know, some times lines just make themselves known…seemingly coming out of “nowhere!” wink

Wow. Those are very generous comments!

They'll all make it over to Taxi; some will make it to a personal CD, and then I'll learn how to perform them just guitar and voice to play out.

Somedays..my computer sucks!

I listened to this the other day, but my girls have been watching Willie Wonka and the Oompa Loompa songs were blasting in the background..so I thought I would come back to listen tonight. Now the song plays for a few moments and then stops.
The part I get to hear sounds great. I also really like this lyric. The intro reminded me of that old Chris Isaak song, Wicked Game. To me that's a good thing, since I still love that song. From what I remember and what I heard, I think this is another really nice one from you too.

Edit: I even tried Soundclick and that won't come-up. I think it's time to quit for the evening.

Hi Mike and Kristi

Well it's Hard to fathom that you continue to improve -- YOU've been so terrific with everything.... and Yet here you go --- this mix is incredible. Love the harmonies the most --- Hand Drums knock me out....

Mike I love the effects on the lead vocal - but some how I can also imagine you just singing this in a very natural voicing and really loving that too - I can dream : )..... but what you've done is wonderful.

Kristi - simplicty Rules and you've got it.

Nice work - I totally enjoy listening to this,

Hey Michal and Kristi,

Wow, what a pleasant listen. Very enjoyable. If you don't mind, just random thoughts while I'm listening.

Firstly, it just changes all the way through. From an opening to conclusion. You can't pick which way it's going to go.

Great sonics, instrumentation is interesting, beautifully layered without being distracting. Clean and clear.

Vocal is a litle low. Bring it up some, and centre for the main vocal. Use the 20/40 delay for effect only , on the lines which need boost, to take it to the next phrase. It doesn't need to be used all the way through. Less is more.

Great stereo spereation, but I'd like to see a little more.

Strong presence on the lead vocal would sit better. I would suggest putting it in the hands of an enginner for the simple reason that no vocalist that I've ever met will treat their main vocal line with as much skill, as someone who is detached.

This song really starts to zing at 2.00. I'd take some of that zing, and put it in the opening 30 secs.

Very nice piece of work.

cheers, niteshift

Kristi and Mike, pretty much everyone has said it all before me. wink

I can't say anything intelligent about the technical aspects, but I love the groove in this song. Fine lyric, great music and vocals.
Beautiful piece all round. Good work, kids! smile

Hi Magne,

I think a "big lyrical payoff" can come in more subtle ways; that it isn't necessary to make big sweeping statements all the time. I hear what you're saying, but I like how the lyric reflects life "as it is." It seems to tell me that it's okay if today isn't a diamond, because tomorrow is another day. That's a big enough payoff for me! smile

I'm glad you enjoyed this, Magne!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the constructive feedback.

I was going to take the main melody and put it in the intro with a tenor guitar and Fender Rhodes, but got caught up in somthing else, and then I said, I'll just put it in later, but you are right, as it is, it's an intro with all backup instruments. There should be the main melody right there in those intro chords.

This piece did get a little loud, and maybe I should have scaled everything back a little, except the vocals. I usually get to watch my VUs bounce a little more. Again, I agree.

Mechanical and short...I'm thinkin' these are a little more on the subjective side. To me, Kraftwerk is mechanical and the songs on Elvis Costello's first album felt short.

Thanks very much for the critical ears. smile

Hi Kimberly,

I had echo on a lot of stuff, and then in my final mix took it off everything except "intrude", cuz...by your own admittance...it IS intrusive, right? LOL...it was a case where the effect was helping to demonstrate the idea behind the word...I think. smile

I'm very happy you found our song cool and unique. cool

Hi John,

Your idea is worth considering; you make your case very well.

I'm thinking, though, that...something more exciting there might draw attention away from the main idea in the bridge, which is that the singer wants to share all the days with "you." ... he's kinda proposing there, or at least backhandedly saying that with "you" sharing them with me, the bad days aren't as bad as they would be without "you" in them...so our jury is out...

You have some fun too, John!

Hi Wendy,

Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp?

Chris Isaak was a Stockton boy, grew up a few miles from Sacramento, always liked him, yeah, I dare anyone to write a better three chord song than "Wicked Game"

Sometimes if I clean out my Temporary Internet Files that helps my PC's performance, and a weekly Hard Drive defrag. Better luck next time, thanks for stopping by, anyway!

Hi Joice,

Thanks Joice, I'm thinking I should throw in a real stinker one of these days, just to take the pressure off, lol. smile As long as I'm working with Kristi lyric's , that not a possibility, for they're singable outta-the-box and spark my imagination even on dull days.

A well timed hand drum that is in tune can really punch out the bass end and add a lot of depth to the mix.

You know me, I love to imagine I can sing like different folks, this was Graham Nash's turn, since I can't quite nail Peter Gabriel for lead. Got him in the harmonies though!

Thanks again,

Mike

Well it worked today. I can't say why..

Overall I really like this. The only thing I can add is that I listen with headphones usually and I was having a hard time hearing the beginning part of the instrumental break. It came-in really nicely on the latter part, but the first part (I think it's the organ playing the melody there) seems like it could be just slightly louder.

I really like the end too, with the hand drums and the bell or chime organ sound. If I could produce something that sounded half as good, I would be a happy camper.

It is the Johnny Depp version, by the way. The soundtrack to that version is amazing. Danny Elfman is the man in Hollywood these days. Everytime one of the songs come-on, a little hand tugs me and we have to dance along with the Oompa Loompas.

Hi Caroline,

You are not alone in your dial-up woes, but better to get a nice sounding download than listen to it in mushy low-fi stream! I have dial-up too, Gynda, Everett, probably 15-25 percent here. I always let out a groan when I see my only choice for listening is "low bandwidth stream."

Good to hear you're loving it! Great hearing from you. smile

Hi Niteshift,

I've been using a plugin that recreates John Lennon's faked double tracking technique as a "watermark" on my pieces, and plan to have lead vocals down the chute, which just means unchecking a dot in my sequencer when I mix it for out CD and for Taxi.

I forgot to put the 12 string/Rhodes combo playing the "some days/I know what life is about" melody over the intro, and the next thing I know I had uploaded a second version already...so it's ready to go on, and you are absolutely correct, without it, the piece starts with a whimper.

Are you a fan of Mitchell Froom? I love his Suzanne Vega and Richard Thompson records, among others...his instemental panning was amazing and rather bold at times. He loves hard panned guitars and percussion! I'm such a wimp and stick to 3 o'clock 9 o'clock as my maximum...50% that would be I think...I agree with you here. smile

With the watermark taken off the vocals they are about ten percent louder. I meticulously "gain ride" them using the automation features in my sequencer. I agree, an engineer for vocals would be nice, and that is an ultimate compliment for you to backhandedly say you think these are worthy of such care. Makes my day, kind sir. smile

I appreciate the thoughtful ears you've lent this, thanks again!

Mike

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for your persistence. smile

The Fender Rhodes is very subtle in the middle register. I cranked the volume on it, it appears loud, decibel wise, but it's one of those freaky things, it does seem low, for the first handle of notes. I thought it was just me. This is good to know, thanks!

A man who used to be in a band called Oingo Boingo, orchestrating all the Oompa-Loompa's pieces...life is just too surreal, I'm telling you! laugh

Thanks again!

Mike

Hi, Kristi and Mike, congratulations on wonderful collaboration, beautiful production and everything you have done to reach the high level of creating your song. I don't find the need to say anything for any improvement. Thank you for sharing.

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
