I'm in the process of creating a CD for massage & relaxation. I'm using a controller (with Reason) to create various aural washes. In listing instruments on the back cover of the CD, do I say I play keyboard, keyboards, electric piano, controller, keyboard washes, or....?
I want to convey that this keyboard is not George Winston-esque piano solos, nor is it keyboards one might associate with a rock band. Given that it's a new age CD, is it safe to assume that the mention of 'keyboards' would lend one to think of relaxing soundscapes?

Hi Eireen,
Why worry yourself over this. Just label them piano solos. No need to list your instrument and software. The music will talk for itself.
I'm not familiar with the Reason software, but if you're playing the piano solos from the controller keyboard into recording software, it's just as legitimate as playing from an acoustic.
BTW, you'll find listeners here if you decide to post one.
Best, John

Hi John - I realize this is a small detail in the scheme of things, however, if I did list 'piano' as my instrument, someone expecting George Winston-esque solos would be disappointed. The music is more atmospheric in nature, with muted string sounds, bells, etc. Calling that a piano would not exactly be correct...
Thanks for your input tho...I figured someone would say 'Why worry?' :-)

Then say "piano and sampled orchestra" or "piano with strings and bells".
Or you can avoid the labeling completely and use "Relaxing, Atmostpheric Music of Eireen" - or some other broad concept.

Hi Eireen
I agree with John..the average consumer(that would be me) wont care.......now if you were marketing the CD'S to day spa's/massage parlors/doctors waiting rooms etc the buyers/purchasing agents might be more demanding as far as detailing the instruments.....but I just dont think joe or jane walmart will care.......best of luck to you in your venture

I would just list the whole thing as keyboards. It covers everything. Most people nowadays know that you can get just about any sound from a keyboard and some software.

Simply "Keyboards", or "keyboards, arrangement, and programming" are all commonly used these days.
...no hard and fast rules though.

Keyboards.
If it is a synth, that is what it is and you will never feel guilty.
I would not take a fake guitar sound and list that as guitar. The occasion I have done that at least.
