My Way Home
© 2008 Sam Wilson/Caroline Holder/Paul T Wentworth

Just another long night,
Damn it's cold
Wind whispers through me
When did I get so old

The years were stolen by the tears
As she fades from my mind
I don't know how to leave this hell
But man, I've got to find...

Chorus
My Way Home
I'm tired of wakin' up here all alone
She's somewhere wishin' and waitin'
(just like me)
We're two wasted souls climbin' the same old walls
I hope when I get there, she won't be gone
When I find, My Way Home

Stranded with my memories
It’s scary on my own
She’s not holding me tonight
My confidence is gone

Looking for my best friend everywhere
Six months since I stepped off that plane
I’ve never gotten too far without her
I wish she was here to point the way (to)

Chorus

Bridge
I wish it could seem like a strange little dream
Slowly tearin' at my very seams
Long Cold Rain in the Valley of Pain

Chorus

When I read through this I envisioned a more "even" tempo-type straight forward rhythm based tune, but this is an interesting treatment. In fact all your stuff is interesting, which is a good thing to be.

By the way, I'll have a new version of Won or Lost coming out in the next week or two that has that new verse you penned in it.

Hi Kevin,

I have to agree, everything Paul touches is unique and interesting! I really do enjoy that about his music and couldn't wait to hear what he'd come up with for this one. I wasn't sure what to expect but I knew it would work, no matter what direction he took. Thanks for the listen!

I like the song pretty well. Nice melody and chord progression. Could be folk or southern rock I guess. Slightly gravelly vocal goes well with it.

IMHO the chorus is too long. It is ready for nice resolution and then goes off in another direction. I would chop out the bits in red from the music and edit the lyrics to fit somehow. YMMV.

I like the bridge - good contrast.

Hi Paul, Caroline, and Sam

I like the music Paul has come up with - I also always seem to enjoy what he does... In this case, I'd like to see the lyrics adjusted 'to fit' in a few places. Over all the tune and playing are quite good. smile jm

Kevin: Bless you! I can't wait to hear it. And with this one....Well how can you lose when you got Wilson and Holder penning such fine lyrics. Can't help but be inspired.

Have a good one!

This sounds so good! I'd expected something a little slower tempo, but love the way Paul chose to do it. A moving song.

Lovely work all round. wink

Donna,
It's funny, the way the lyric reads, I would expect slower too, but I love the sound of this. It surprised me, but I was thrilled to hear the melody. Reminded me a bit of Tom Petty, and I do love my Petty!! LOL

Thanks for taking time to listen, one of these days my pc will be up to par and I can get back to listening to whole songs without having to download them all. Hmmm, maybe it's time to clean out some of these awesome tunes, <snif> but I really don't want to......what to do, what to do????

Hey nice 3-way, some good lyrics too. Liked your treatment of it Paul, got a nice groove. I can hear it with a production kindof like "stand by me"

Hi Louis,
thanks for stopping and listening! your input is always appreciated!

Stand By Me is a great song, very universal, the production is cool on it, too!

I can't wait to hear what Paul comes up with next, it's always a treat!!

Louis : Thanks for the comments. That Stand by me idea for production is an interesting idea. I would like to give it a try on the next version. Take care and stay tuned.

Hi everyone,

This sounds like a well written really soulful motown piece, with a totally deconstructed melody and rythm :-)

Very raw, and very interesting too, the funny way its done gives good prosody with the lyric about getting old!

Donna: I appreciarte your comments here. I have been real busy and haven't visited the site for a while. But I am still around and still writing. This one was real fun mostly because of the greatwriting by Caroline and Niteshift. Did you hear that you two??

Hope you can give me the opportunity to try somthing else from your library. Also wanted to talk to you about a more produced version of this one.

Donna I wish you good luck in your writing. I hope to partici0pate a little more frequently in the future. I feel like I am out of the loop.

Hi guys, Sam had so many amazing lines, I really liked what he had to start with.

Paul, you added so much character to this, I hope to continue on to a more produced version too!! Talk away!!

Hi Joice, Kaley,

Paul is so cool, he takes somethng, adds a touch to itthat is completely unexpected, and it works, somehow, it always seems to sound so good.
Paul is going to resing this, when he has a chance, and he'll post it up here, (I'm assuming) when he does. Paul, you're awesome! Sam, thanks for letting me take part in your song.

So how did I miss this one before now. Got to pay closer attention. This song deserves it. Nice, nice, nice. I like the little things that you do with the song - those little touches in the music and lyrics that make it stand out. Overall, the flow is quite good and natural. The lyrics shine - don't always have the expected lines - that adds to the flavor of the song.

Hi Paul, Caroline & Sam,

This has a nice feel to it, that Wentworth groove!

I agree about the chorus. What about this:
"My Way Home
I'm tired of wakin' up here all alone
She's somewhere wishin' and waitin'
(just like me)
We're two wasted souls, hope she won't be gone
When I find My Way Home"
Obviously with a little tweak to the music.

I also think the bridge could be tighter. Something like this:
"I wish it was just a dream
It's tearin' at my very seams
There's a long Cold Rain in this Valley of Pain"

The lyrics and music have such a natural feel, maybe 3 people but one mind put it all together. Nice one.

I so love this. I love Van Morrison, and for some reason it kept bringing him to my mind. Paul, you have such a unique voice makes me want to listen more than once, and the chord progressions that you use fit beautifully together with your voice and keep it even more interesting.

Good job to all 3 of you,

Really great song and your performance too Paul,

Paul is going to resing this, when he has a chance, and he'll post it up here, (I'm assuming) when he does. Paul, you're awesome! Sam, thanks for letting me take part in your song.

Caroline: You are so sweet for saying stuff like that I will give you jest four hours to cut that out. Anyway I hope you have something new up your sleeve and you give me a crack at it when you do.

Hey Paul...

Nice one. I like the progression...interesting, in a good way. There's a lot to like with this one. As I listened, I kept thinking, "Ya know, Fogerty could nail this puppy!".

Nice cut and listen.

The lyrics shine - don't always have the expected lines - that adds to the flavor of the song.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Tom. I appreciate you commenting here and most importantly, getting enjoyment from it. U have put out a new version of the song. I hope you come back to listen shortly.

The new version is even better. A little smoother, but interestingly, a little more lively at the same time. This is a fine song.

Hi Sam, Caroline and Paul,

I came back to listen again, cause I loved the first version, and I love the new version even better, just smoothed it out a little but kept that beautiful style. Paul, you got something good lol, a unique style and vocal, and it's all good.

I swear I hear Van Morrison sing this, you gotta get ahold of him Caroline, lol.

I agree about the chorus. What about this:
"My Way Home
I'm tired of wakin' up here all alone
She's somewhere wishin' and waitin'
(just like me)
We're two wasted souls, hope she won't be gone
When I find My Way Home"
Obviously with a little tweak to the music.

I also think the bridge could be tighter. Something like this:
"I wish it was just a dream
It's tearin' at my very seams
There's a long Cold Rain in this Valley of Pain"

The lyrics and music have such a natural feel, maybe 3 people but one mind put it all together. Nice one.

Ricki

Ricki: I like the suggestions. I think Caroline and Sam may agree. Although I will leave it up to them. I am happy about how version 2 turned out although there is never a perfect version in my mind. There's always something that could be fixed. Will this one go to version 3?? Not sure yet.

Please stay tuned....paul

I like the ideas for the chorus and bridge, it does seem a little bit disjointed, maybe give it a wee tightening up, what say you?

Letha: on behalf of Sam and Caroline I thank you. I hope you read this. I have been delayed in writing back to folks lately.
Lame excuse is busy-ness. Its true. But I like the reference to Van Morrison. I so much like your comment on my voice. Besides flattering my ego, it confirms that my singing must be improving. I am passionate about trying to bring the right amount of emotion to every song. Don't over do it but do give it some heart. I feel like lately, just lately I have been able to approach this goal a few times. This I think is one of them. I will probably never reach my goal but I do want to get as close as I can before get too old.

Hi Paul,

I think the music and lyric are great.

Paul, I think you have a better vocal take in you. You sound a little nervous, like you're tensing up for a "take" or maybe at this point weren't familiar enough with the melody.

I still enjoy this a lot, but I'd love to hear how good this could sound with a more confident, relaxed vocal, like I've heard you do on other recent songs... smile

Best wishes,

Mike

I do like this version better. It sounds a little smoother and tighter to me. I like the way it is developing. It is a solid song. I think that the tone and idea of the song comes through well.

Hi gang,

Cool song.
Like the feel of it.
Here's my favorite lines...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just another long night,
Damn it's cold
Wind whispers through me
When did I get so old
Long Cold Rain in the Valley of Pain
Have a good weekend.
Alan: Thanks for your comments here. I did not think of the Fogerty connection. I guess I can put this on the shelf with the Van Morrison reference made by Letha. Gives me a lot to live up to.
Tom: Thankyou so much for coming back and listening to this new version. I have mixed feelings on this one, because it is more premeditated than the last one. But I am growing to likeit.
Thanks again
Caroline: Thanks back at you. Thanks for the opportunity to put some music to what you and Sam had. It was fun and continues to be. I will be singing this at a benefit for the AUstralian bushfires on March 14.
Paul,
A benefit!! That's so cool. You'll have to let us know how it's recieved. I'm really liking the feel of this song, has it's own style and I think it's so cool! Thanks so much.
Oh, and I've been working on one for you!! It's almost there, just a few more tweaks and I'll send it to you for a look and you can tell me if it's interesting to you or not.
Thanks Letha: I really like this version also. I am not totally happy with my voice. There's always more to improve on the vocal, but its not bad. I don't think that I would use it as my final take, but I don't get tired of it.
Hope you are having a great day.
See you later.....Paul
Sam: I guess by now you know that I've been spending more time doing life than doing music. I am tired of doing life so much and want to get back to music. thanks for your comments on this one. I kinda like the way it is structured, guess it kinda grew on me, however, I can see what you mean. The tightening up part I get. It could stand a real dose of good production and a little more spot on in the vocals. SOme day I will try it again.
