I met Craig at a mentoring session here in Philadelphia. He was a great guy and, as you can see, had a lot to say about songwriting. The best post I've read on his blog is from last September. When I'm writing to music, I think of this post constantly! http://ninetymilewind.blogspot.com/2008/09/marriage-in-meter.html

He's enormously talented. Go to ASCAP's Ace Database and see what he's written and for whom (and with whom).
I'd say once you've got that kind of talent and that many cuts, and you've been to Nashville and worked in that scene, you can write that kind of article.

He has a great point about the difference between an ordinary song and a great one. One cannot become complacent and settle for ok.

I think Craig is saying that it is all about the raw material. If the raw material isn't good enough, the song will never be great, because there's no potential to exploit. I can't agree more.
Once I had a song at one of Craig's feedback sessions, and he bashed it soo terribly! So I've paid some dues - But no hard feelings, the song was really terrible. That guy is tough, but honest!
