I've always been a fan, but here is a great article for the non-believers:

Yeah, give Ringo his propers. When our band Redhead was working on our second album, the producer, Michael Smith, took a metronome to several Beatles albums and, as this article says, Ringo was dead on the money.

You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash

It's only music.

Yea, he sure was. Probably one of the reasons Pete Best was replaced. Ringo wasn't the fancy drummer, but he was right in there with the melody, the singer and the total feel. You don't need to be a highly skilled drummer to play pop. You have to be rudimentary sound. You just gotta take your hat off to Ringo!

Perhaps Ringo's greatest asset was the ability to listen and adapt... to his bandmates, George M., and engineers. In the world of classical music recordings, Stokowski and Toscanini were contemporaries, yet Toscanini's narrow minded stubbornness vs. Stokowski's enlightenment made his recordings sound like second hand, tin sounding recordings compared to Stokowski's Ruben's nudes.

I doubt Bonham or Moon could have come up with anything close to Abbey Road or Let it be. I know we're talking apples and oranges, but the truth is: Ringo is still alive!

I have made some of those same arguments about Ringo for years, and I get tired of hearing drummers tell me how average he was. The truth is that while he never did extended solo b.s. that most people don't want to hear anyway, his rhythms were so varied and cool yet always in the groove of the song that many of the Beatles songs would not have been the same with anyone else. He did some really innovative stuff too! Just listen to the drum rolls in Come Together. Notice how it starts on the floor tom and rolls around the set ending on the snare? Who else does anything like that?

If he were available I would take Ringo over nearly anyone else, simply because he is into the song, not just the music.

It's true, he does, has for a while. Usually ends with a flam.

Originality and personality.
Ringo probably had that the most of all.
He carried the beat for the band that influenced all that came after.

Of course he will have that jet setting life.
Why should the darn politicians and lawyers have all the fun?

When I think of Ringo, I think of drums like he played on "Drive My Car". Who else played (or plays) like that? It may not be the hardest thing to play, but the man was no hack, he knew exactly what he was doing.
And Jack nailed it on-the head... he served The Song; which were some of the greatest songs of all-time. The man was a smart musician.

And, the #1 reason to give Ringo respect?
HE WAS A BEATLE!!!
